Seven 2026 pickup nameplates have manufacturer starting prices below $40,000 in the United States: the Ford Maverick, Ford Ranger, Ford F-150, Chevrolet Colorado, GMC Canyon, Nissan Frontier and Toyota Tacoma. Their listed starting prices range from $28,145 to $39,585. These are entry-price figures, not estimates of what a truck will cost after configuration, fees and local dealer pricing; the available official pricing checks also do not establish a complete census of every U.S. pickup.
Which 2026 pickups have a verified starting price below $40,000?

| Pickup | Starting MSRP | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Ford Maverick | $28,145 | Ford showroom |
| Ford Ranger | $33,550 | Ford showroom |
| Ford F-150 | $39,585 | Ford showroom |
| Chevrolet Colorado | $32,400 | Chevrolet |
| GMC Canyon | $38,900 | GMC |
| Nissan Frontier | $32,150 | Nissan |
| Toyota Tacoma | $32,545 | Toyota |
What a starting MSRP does—and does not—tell you
A starting MSRP means at least one entry configuration is advertised below the price ceiling. It does not mean every trim, cab, bed, drivetrain or option package for that nameplate qualifies. Destination or delivery charges, options, dealer-installed equipment, taxes, title and registration, inventory conditions and local dealer pricing can change the amount you pay. The listed figures are not out-the-door quotes.
That distinction is especially important for the two entries nearest the limit: the Ford F-150 starts at $39,585 and the GMC Canyon at $38,900. There is little room below $40,000 for additional costs or equipment on those entry prices. GMC lists its AT4 from $45,500 and Denali from $53,300, while its Elevation is the trim with the qualifying $38,900 starting price. Chevrolet separately lists the Colorado LT from $36,000 and a shown LT build at $39,300; those figures illustrate how trim and build affect the price, rather than guaranteeing a final transaction amount.

How to compare the trucks for your budget
Use the starting prices to decide which models merit a closer look, then compare the exact builds you could actually buy. A lower entry price is not automatically the better financial fit if it lacks the cab, bed, drivetrain or equipment you need.
- Set your real price ceiling. Decide whether $40,000 means the advertised vehicle price or the maximum amount you can spend after taxes, fees and any financing costs. Ask a dealer for an itemized, out-the-door quote for the specific build.
- Choose the body and drivetrain you need. Compare available cab and bed combinations, passenger space and two-wheel-drive versus four-wheel-drive versions. Check the price of the required configuration, not just the nameplate’s lowest advertised figure.
- Match work ratings to the actual build. Check towing and payload for the precise configuration and equipment. A model’s maximum advertised towing number is not a base-trim rating and should not be compared with another truck’s entry configuration.
- Compare included equipment and powertrain. Look at standard safety and driver-assistance features, infotainment, bed features, comfort equipment, engine and transmission. Chevrolet says the Colorado’s standard 2.7-liter TurboMax is rated at 310 horsepower and 430 lb-ft of torque, with maximum available towing of 7,700 pounds; that maximum is not a rating for every Colorado. Nissan describes the Frontier’s standard 3.8-liter V6 as producing 310 horsepower and 281 lb-ft of torque. Its towing figures vary by version. See the Colorado specifications and Frontier specifications for the applicable details.
- Compare like with like. Where fuel economy matters, use official figures for matching configurations rather than comparing unlike engines or drivetrains. Then compare the configured prices and quotes alongside the equipment and ratings you need.
Two popular pickups that miss the cutoff
The 2026 Honda Ridgeline starts at $40,795, according to Honda, and the 2026 Toyota Tundra starts at $41,260, according to Toyota. Both are above the $40,000 starting-price threshold used here.

How complete is this under-$40,000 list?
The seven entries are the nameplates for which official 2026 starting prices below $40,000 were verified. The available official price checks do not establish that these are every pickup sold in the United States that qualifies. In particular, not every remaining maker or model—including all large-truck, compact-pickup and electric-pickup candidates—had usable official entry pricing in the checks. Treat the list as seven verified options, not a guaranteed exhaustive census.
