Phoebe Gates is building a professional identity of her own mainly through Phia, a shopping assistant she co-founded with Sophia Kianni. Coverage describes the two as Stanford roommates who started the company together. In a 2025 podcast appearance, as reported by Hindustan Times, Gates described making a name outside her father’s shadow as difficult, and she also acknowledged the privilege and opportunities her parents gave her. Both points matter for anyone thinking about how family money and networks affect a career, so this article keeps them side by side.

What Phia is, as the reporting describes it

Phia is a digital shopping tool. Realtor.com’s July 2025 interview describes it as a service that compares prices for new and secondhand items across websites. An eWeek profile from March 2026 calls it an AI-powered shopping assistant and identifies Gates as its co-founder and co-CEO. Phia’s own signup page uses the label “Personal Shopping Assistant.” Each source describes the product in its own words, and none of them establishes how many features it has, how well it performs, or how large it has become.

Source Date What it establishes What it does not establish
eWeek profile March 2026 Gates is co-founder and co-CEO; Phia is an AI-powered shopping assistant; Gates and Sophia Kianni met as Stanford roommates Roles and features as of March 2026 only; startup titles and products can change
Realtor.com interview July 2025 Phia compares prices for new and secondhand items across websites; the project traces back to the founders’ shared Stanford dorm-room experience Current feature set, accuracy of comparisons, or user numbers
Phia signup page Undated in the source reviewed The service is positioned as a “Personal Shopping Assistant” Feature breadth, performance, or commercial scale
Hindustan Times report on the Call Her Daddy appearance April 2025 appearance, reported afterward Gates described making a name for herself as difficult and acknowledged family privilege A full verbatim transcript; the report gives short fragments only
George V Magazine March 2026 Reported a $35 million funding round and a $185 million valuation for Phia Independent confirmation, revenue, profit, or adoption

Her role at Phia

The clearest fact in the record is that Gates co-founded Phia with Kianni, and that the two met as Stanford roommates. eWeek’s March 2026 profile lists her as co-CEO. A reader checking her current title should look for a more recent company announcement, because the record here is a snapshot from that date.

What she has said about her family’s influence

Gates’s most useful public comments come from her April 2025 appearance on the Call Her Daddy podcast, as reported by Hindustan Times. She described building a name outside her father’s shadow as difficult. She also acknowledged the privilege and opportunities her parents provided. The two points are not in tension. A family with resources can open doors and expose a young founder to advisers and opportunities, and the founder still has to do the work that a door does not do for you.

The available reporting gives only short fragments of what she said, not a complete transcript. If you plan to quote her, check the original episode and its transcript first, and do not stretch a fragment into a longer statement.

The reported funding and valuation

George V Magazine reported in March 2026 that Phia announced a funding round and a valuation. Attributed exactly as reported: $35 million funding round and $185 million valuation — George V Magazine, 2026.

A valuation is the price investors assign to a company’s equity in a financing round. It is not revenue, profit, or evidence of how many people use the product. That figure was also not independently confirmed in the sources reviewed here.

What remains unverified

  • Her present title and whether Phia’s leadership has changed since March 2026.
  • The current list of features and the merchants or websites Phia compares.
  • User numbers, merchant counts, and the current status of the funding round.
  • The full wording of her comments on privilege and her father’s shadow.

What a personal-finance reader can take from this

  • Separate advantages from effort. Write down the resources that helped you, such as family money, housing, schooling, or contacts, and the work you did with them. Both belong in an honest account of your progress.
  • Treat valuations as a price tag, not an income. A funding round tells you what investors agreed to pay at one moment. It says little about whether the business pays its bills.
  • Treat a financial cushion as a risk tool. Having a safety net can make it easier to try something uncertain. It does not guarantee that the venture succeeds.
  • Verify before you repeat. Check titles, dates, and figures against the original publication, and be cautious with numbers that come from a single secondary report.

Gates’s career so far shows a founder who is building a visible company while speaking openly about the advantages that made the start easier. Judging that record requires the dates and sources above, not a verdict on whether she is self-made.
