Procter & Gamble forecast an approximately $1 billion after-tax cost headwind for fiscal 2027, tied to the Middle East conflict. That is a management estimate, not a reported expense, and it bundles oil-sensitive materials and energy with transportation and other supply-chain premiums. P&G did not assign separate dollar amounts to oil, freight or tariffs.
What P&G’s $1 billion forecast means
On its fiscal 2026 fourth-quarter earnings call in August 2026, P&G CFO Andre Schulten described an approximately $1 billion after-tax fiscal 2027 cost headwind associated with the conflict in the Middle East. The company’s outlook includes higher raw-material, energy and transportation costs, along with other premiums. The Motley Fool’s transcript of the earnings call records the guidance; it is not an SEC filing.

The estimate is a combined figure. P&G has not disclosed how much of it is attributable individually to oil, shipping, trucking, supplier inflation or force majeure premiums. It should not be read as $1 billion of oil costs or as a certain increase in the company’s eventual expenses.

How oil and shipping contribute to the pressure
Oil-sensitive materials and energy
P&G’s outlook used an effective Brent crude assumption of $90 per barrel. That is an input to management’s forecast, not a statement that Brent spot prices remained at $90 throughout fiscal 2027. P&G also said materials used in the first half of fiscal 2027 had been produced when underlying oil prices were above $100 per barrel, which management cited as a reason for a larger impact early in the year. The earnings-call transcript does not quantify the resulting material-cost contribution.

Oil can affect costs through more than fuel. P&G’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K identifies oil-derived resins among its commodity exposures and also names paper-based pulp and other commodity or input-price fluctuations. The filing discusses these alongside, rather than as a substitute for, transport and supply-chain risks. P&G’s fiscal 2026 Form 10-K does not say that oil alone explains the company’s cost outlook.
Freight, trucking and supplier premiums
Schulten also pointed to ocean-freight costs, trucking surcharges, supplier inflation and force majeure premiums. These are non-commodity supply-chain elements in the company’s explanation, and they can add cost even when they are not directly measured by the price of crude. The outlook does not provide a standalone shipping-rate statistic or a dollar breakdown for these items.

Why the earlier tariff estimate is a different issue
P&G’s fiscal 2026 tariff guidance belongs to an earlier period and should not be added to, or confused with, the fiscal 2027 forecast. The figures changed as management updated its estimate:
| Guidance point | Estimate | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Initial fiscal 2026 outlook, July 2025 | About $1 billion before tax, or $800 million after tax | Management’s initial estimate of higher tariff costs. P&G’s fiscal 2025 results release. |
| Fiscal 2026 first-quarter update, October 2025 | About $400 million after tax | A later revision to the fiscal 2026 tariff estimate, not the fiscal 2027 oil-and-supply-chain forecast. P&G’s fiscal 2026 first-quarter results release. |
| Fiscal 2027 outlook, August 2026 | Approximately $1 billion after tax | A newer bundled cost headwind associated with the Middle East conflict, including raw materials, energy, transportation and other premiums. Earnings-call transcript. |
The older tariff figures are specific to fiscal 2026 guidance. They do not establish how much tariff expense P&G will incur in fiscal 2027 or how tariffs contribute to the newer $1 billion estimate.

What the cost outlook says about margins
P&G reported fiscal 2026 net sales of $87.0 billion and a gross margin of 50.2%, down 100 basis points year over year. Its Form 10-K discusses several factors affecting margin, including product mix, product and packaging investment, restructuring, tariffs and commodity costs. The reported margin change therefore cannot be attributed to oil or freight alone. The fiscal 2026 Form 10-K provides the company’s financial results and risk discussion.
The company also operates internationally: more than half of its sales are generated outside the United States, according to the same filing. P&G says global macroeconomic factors, geopolitical tensions and government policies can affect net sales, net earnings and cash flows. That exposure makes the company’s costs vulnerable to more than one market or policy change.

How P&G may respond—and the trade-offs
P&G describes pricing, productivity and supply-chain optimization as tools for managing cost pressure. Raising prices can help offset higher expenses, but the company warns that higher prices may negatively affect product consumption. Productivity improvements and supply-chain changes may help control costs without relying only on price increases, though the filing does not promise that they will fully offset the forecast headwind. The Form 10-K discusses these cost-management risks and approaches.

The forecast signals pressure on P&G’s cost base, but it does not establish that a particular product will become more expensive, when any price change might occur, or how much of a price change would be caused by oil or shipping. Retail prices also reflect factors beyond P&G’s input costs. For investors, the $1 billion figure is a management outlook to track against later results, not a standalone measure of realized losses or a forecast of a specific change in earnings.
