That does not establish Peterborough’s exact payout: the reported Ipswich fee included potential add-ons, Blackburn’s earlier fee also included add-ons, and the full contract terms and final accounting are not public.
What sell-on share did Peterborough reportedly have?
TWTD reported on 21 August 2024 that MacAnthony said Peterborough was due 15% of Blackburn’s profit on the fee Blackburn paid for Szmodics. The reported terms are MacAnthony’s account, not a publicly available contract. TWTD also reported that Blackburn paid £1.8 million plus add-ons to sign Szmodics from Peterborough in 2022, and that Bristol City had a separate 20% share.
The key distinction is that the reported 15% applied to Blackburn’s profit, not automatically to the full amount Ipswich agreed to pay. A sell-on based on profit cannot be worked out by taking 15% of a headline transfer fee.
What was reported about the Ipswich transfer fee?
BBC Sport reported on 15 August 2024 that Ipswich had agreed an initial £9 million fee, with add-on bonuses that could take the figure to about £11 million. Ipswich’s announcement did not disclose the fee, so the BBC figures are reported terms rather than an official club confirmation.

Can Peterborough’s exact payout be calculated?
No confirmed amount can be calculated from the public figures cited here. The available reporting does not provide the full sell-on clause, the final amounts Blackburn paid and received after add-ons, how contingent bonuses were treated in the profit calculation, or a confirmed statement of what Peterborough received.
For that reason, applying 15% to either £9 million or about £11 million would not establish Peterborough’s payout. Those are reported gross fee figures, while the stated basis is Blackburn’s profit. The exact payment may also depend on which add-ons were triggered and the contract’s definition of profit.

Why did the transfer attract attention?
Szmodics scored 27 Championship goals and 33 goals in all competitions for Blackburn in 2023–24, according to BBC Sport. Ipswich’s profile also records 33 goals in all competitions for Blackburn that season. His scoring record helps explain the interest in the move, but does not determine the sell-on calculation.
MacAnthony’s reaction, quoted by TWTD from his podcast The Hard Truth, was: “I cannot believe that deal. I am f*****g stunned. I was stunned. Nine million quid!” It expresses his surprise at the reported deal; it is not confirmation of the contractual calculation or Peterborough’s cash receipt.
