They document his motorsport career and changes in ownership of the Sauber team, but do not disclose his personal assets, liabilities, sale proceeds, or other income. A team’s value or ownership history cannot be treated as Sauber’s personal fortune.
Why Peter Sauber’s net worth cannot be verified
Formula 1 and BMW Group accounts of Sauber’s career and the team’s ownership changes do not provide a personal balance sheet or a substantiated net-worth estimate. They also do not disclose the prices or personal proceeds needed to calculate one. Any precise figure presented without reliable sourcing would therefore be speculation.

Net worth is the value of a person’s assets minus liabilities. It is not the same as the value of a company they founded, the amount a company was sold for, or the revenue a racing team generated. The available ownership announcements do not establish what Sauber personally received or retained.
How Peter Sauber built the racing team
Formula 1 describes Sauber as a trained electrician and former car salesman who turned to motorsport after deciding that running the family traffic-light business did not appeal to him. He developed a racing operation in Switzerland and brought the team into Formula 1 in 1993. Its earlier milestones included winning the 1970 Swiss Sportscar Championship with the C1 and winning the Nürburgring 1000 km race in 1986 with the Mercedes-powered C8. Formula 1’s history of Sauber covers that development.
#1 Best Overall
The team scored two points on its Formula 1 debut and finished fourth in the constructors’ championship in 2001, according to Formula 1’s retrospective. Those results describe the team’s record; they do not establish Sauber’s personal earnings or wealth. Formula 1’s account of the team’s history and ownership provides the career context.
What the ownership record does—and does not—show
| Period or event | What the sources establish | What they do not establish |
|---|---|---|
| 2006–2009 | Formula 1 describes BMW as holding a majority stake in the team during the BMW Sauber period. | Sauber’s personal stake value, income, or net worth. |
| November 2009 | BMW Group announced an agreement with Peter Sauber to sell the BMW Sauber F1 Team, conditional on securing a place on the 2010 starting grid. | The agreement’s price or Sauber’s proceeds. BMW Group’s 27 November 2009 announcement gives no transaction value. |
| 2010 return | Formula 1 reports that Sauber took back control after the proposed Qadbak deal fell through and the team’s survival was at risk. | The financial terms of the buyback. Sauber said, “The buyback was the only way to save the team from shutting down, and it was certainly not planned,” in Formula 1’s retrospective. |
| 2016 sale | Sauber and Monisha Kaltenborn relinquished all shares when Longbow Finance acquired the holding company, according to Formula 1. | The sale price or Sauber’s personal proceeds. Formula 1’s 20 July 2016 announcement does not report them. |
| March 2024 Audi announcement | Formula 1 reported that Audi had chosen to take a 100% stake in Sauber ahead of its planned 2026 entry. | Any continuing personal stake or wealth belonging to Peter Sauber. Formula 1’s 8 March 2024 report concerns corporate ownership. |
BMW’s announcement quoted Sauber saying he was “very relieved” that a solution had been found because it meant the Hinwil location and most jobs could be retained. That statement explains the outcome he valued, not the financial terms of the agreement.

The sources establish that Sauber was involved in the 2009 agreement and later returned to control, then relinquished all shares in the 2016 sale to Longbow Finance. They do not state what either transaction cost, what the 2016 sale paid, or how much Sauber personally received. The documented change in ownership is not enough to calculate personal proceeds or net worth.
Likewise, Audi’s later announced stake in Sauber is not evidence that Peter Sauber retained shares. It is a corporate ownership fact, not a personal-wealth estimate.

How to assess online net-worth estimates
A net-worth figure is useful only when its basis is clear. Before relying on a published estimate, check whether it identifies a credible source for assets and liabilities, distinguishes personal wealth from company value, and explains how any sale proceeds were established. The official sources linked above document career and ownership events, but do not substantiate a personal figure.
