That change is no longer just a new-hours announcement. WA Consumer Protection’s 2026 schedule lists the 8am–6pm window on seven public holidays, but it applies to general retail shops in the Perth metropolitan area—not every business in Western Australia. A permitted window also does not require a shop to open.
What the 2023 public holiday trading-hours update changed
A PerthNow story by Jonathon Nolan, published on 23 February 2023, reported that Perth metropolitan general retail shops could choose to trade between 8am and 6pm on Labour Day, Easter Monday, WA Day and the then newly named King’s Birthday. Previously, the ordinary window for those holidays was 11am–5pm. The first date the change applied was Labour Day, 6 March 2023. Read the original PerthNow report.
That story describes the 2023 change, not a complete current schedule. For current dates and hours, use WA Consumer Protection’s year-specific guidance.

The dates and holiday schedule are in the government’s “Christmas shopping hours extended” announcement. It also says that Perth metropolitan Christmas-season trading will begin on Saturday 5 December 2026, with 8am–6pm weekend hours on listed dates and longer weekday hours from 14 December through Christmas Eve. Consult the announcement’s full date-by-date schedule for those seasonal hours rather than applying the public-holiday table to Christmas trading.
Which rules apply to a particular shop?
The public holiday schedule is specific to general retail shops in the Perth metropolitan area. WA law has closure restrictions subject to statutory exceptions and ministerial variation orders; WA Consumer Protection distinguishes general shops from small and special retail shops. Liquor retailers have separate licensing hours, so the general retail table should not be used to infer their permitted trading times.

- For a retailer: identify the holiday and year, confirm that the premises are in the Perth metropolitan area, determine the shop category, and check whether the ordinary rule or a current variation order governs its hours. WA Consumer Protection’s retail trading-hours guidance explains the categories and rules.
- For a shopper: check the specific retailer’s posted or online hours. The hours in the schedule are permitted trading hours, not a promise that a store will be open.
Check the date and location before relying on the schedule
Public holiday dates can vary by year and region in Western Australia. The state’s official public holiday calendar lists 2026 and 2027 dates and notes that some regional areas observe the King’s Birthday on an alternative date. A Perth metropolitan schedule may therefore not apply to a shop elsewhere in the state, even when the holiday has the same name.
