Yes, the City of Perth ended free night parking in its off-street car parks on 31 March 2025 and replaced it with a $5 flat night rate from 6pm. The change did not end every free-parking option: the City says some on-street bays remain free at night, and the exact rules depend on the bay and car park.
What changed on 31 March 2025?
At its 25 February 2025 Ordinary Council Meeting, the City of Perth Council approved removing the free-night promotion in all City off-street car parks and replacing it with a $5 flat fee from 6pm. The change took effect on 31 March 2025, subject to statutory local public notice provisions. The confirmed council minutes record the decision; the City’s 28 March 2025 announcement gave the implementation date.
This was a change to City-operated off-street parking, not a blanket end to free parking across the CBD. Some on-street bays and specific free-parking offers were treated separately.
How much is night parking, and when does the rate apply?
The City’s current parking information lists a $5 night rate. The start time is 6pm, but the end time and eligibility vary by facility: boom-gate car parks operate on the night rate until 5:59am, while non-boom-gate car parks operate from 6pm to 3:59am. The City lists exclusions for J.H. Abrahams, Heirisson Island, Victoria Gardens and Mardalup Park car parks. Check the individual car park listing and on-site signs before relying on the rate; opening hours and conditions differ.

How did daytime and hourly parking fees change?
In its 28 March 2025 announcement, the City said day rates at all City car parks would increase by 50 cents to $1 per day. It also described hourly-rate increases as 20 to 60 cents “per day.” That is the City’s wording; the announcement does not make the unit clear enough to restate it as a per-hour increase. For a particular facility’s current charge, consult its listing and tariff information rather than applying those announcement figures to every stay.
The City’s current page lists Perth CBD on-street parking at $7 per hour or part thereof, with a $2 minimum transaction. That is distinct from City off-street car-park pricing. EasyPark service fees, where applicable, are paid to EasyPark rather than the City. Check the bay sign for its zone, restrictions and payment instructions.

Yes, but the remaining options are location-specific and should not be confused with the former free-night offer in City off-street car parks.
Some on-street bays at night
The City’s March 2025 announcement said free night-time parking would continue in certain on-street bays from 6pm. It did not describe every bay as free, so check the sign at the exact space for the applicable hours and restrictions.

Why did the City raise the fees?
The City attributed the increases to higher operating costs and the loss of parking capacity at Perth Concert Hall and Queens Gardens. Its 27 February 2025 council update said 900 bays would be lost because of works at those sites and that this necessitated the flat $5 night-time fee; its 28 March announcement described the loss as “over 900” bays. These are the City’s stated reasons, not independent evidence that the fee was necessary.

How to check the right option before you park
- Choose the type of parking. Determine whether you need a City off-street car park or an on-street bay; their rates and terms are different.
- Check the exact location. Use the City’s current parking page and the individual facility listing, then read the signs at the car park or bay.
- Match the arrival time to the rules. For a night stay, confirm whether the facility uses a boom gate, the rate’s end time, opening hours and any listed exclusions.
- Verify any free offer independently. Check that the named bay or car park is eligible and that the offer is still in force; a past announcement does not guarantee current availability.
