Those accounts illustrate how some shoppers approached the event; they do not show that Perth shoppers generally set aside cost-of-living concerns.
What PerthNow reported from Black Friday
PerthNow reporter Cheyanne Enciso described shoppers looking for deals, particularly on big-ticket purchases. At Karrinyup, interviewed shoppers spoke about Christmas presents as well as items for themselves. The report also referred to traffic around major shopping centres, including Carousel in Cannington. These were on-the-ground observations and individual interviews, not a survey of Perth households.
What shoppers said they bought
Suzy Varley said she had saved during the year for Black Friday and spent about $900 at Karrinyup. She also said she bought a few items for herself because the sales were good, and described the centre as “absolutely chock-a-block” as she left the car park. Another shopper, Jacintha Fraser-Gillard, described buying discounted clothes, candles and makeup brushes. These accounts show different types of purchases, but do not establish typical spending or financial priorities across the city. (PerthNow’s report)
What shoppers were expected to buy
The report named televisions, washing machines, fridges and other technology as likely areas of demand, alongside clothing and gifts mentioned by interviewees. It did not identify specific models, retailers or transaction prices, and it did not compare products or determine whether any deal represented good value.

What the expert said—and what it does not prove
Andrew Hughes, a marketing lecturer at the Australian National University, said shoppers had saved ahead of the event. He called Black Friday “the best deal day of the year” and said he thought big-ticket buying would be followed by a pause before shoppers turned to Christmas food and drink. These are Hughes’s observations and expectations, not measured findings about every shopper or a confirmed account of how spending unfolded after the event. (PerthNow)
How to read the spending forecasts
PerthNow reported expectations of nearly $7 billion in spending by about six million Australians over the four days from Black Friday to Cyber Monday. It also relayed an Australian Retailers Association forecast of $800 million in Western Australian spending, up 5.5% on the prior year. Both figures were forecasts published in 2025, not verified final sales totals. (PerthNow)

A separate Australian Retail Council report, citing a forecast from the Australian Retailers Association and Roy Morgan, projected $6.8 billion in Australian Black Friday–Cyber Monday spending and about six million participants for 28 November to 1 December 2025. The national estimate is a different geographic measure from the $800 million Western Australian forecast; the two national estimates are close but not identical. Inflation context: a national figure, not a Perth measure
The Australian Bureau of Statistics reported annual CPI inflation of 3.8% in the 12 months to October 2025, compared with 3.6% in the 12 months to September. Housing was the largest contributor, with prices up 5.9% over the year to October. These are national figures, published on 26 November 2025; they provide economic context for the period but do not measure Perth shoppers’ budgets or explain any individual purchase. What the report can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show: what several shoppers interviewed at Karrinyup said they bought or planned for, the busy conditions described in the report, and forecasts made for the 2025 sales period.
- It cannot show: whether Perth residents as a whole deprioritised cost-of-living pressures, what the final Black Friday–Cyber Monday sales total was, or whether a particular product was genuinely a bargain.
The story is a snapshot of one shopping day and its forecasts. It offers no representative Perth shopper survey or confirmed final spending total.
