Personal Loan With a Low CIBIL Score: 5 Practical Strategies

A low CIBIL score can make an unsecured personal loan harder to get or more expensive, but there is no universal score cutoff that guarantees approval or rejection. Lenders make their own decisions using your full application, including your credit report, income, employment and repayment pattern. These five strategies can help you apply more carefully and strengthen your credit profile; none guarantees a loan.

Can you get a personal loan with a low CIBIL score?

Possibly. TransUnion CIBIL says some lenders may still offer a loan to someone with a low score, but may impose a higher interest rate or stricter terms. It also states that the lending decision belongs to the lender, not CIBIL. A low score therefore does not establish either automatic rejection or eligibility.

CIBIL scores range from 300 to 900 and summarize information in the Accounts and Enquiries sections of your credit report. The score is only one part of a lender’s assessment. For personal loans, lenders may also consider employment status, annual income and EMI repayment patterns. TransUnion CIBIL’s score and lending FAQs explain these factors and the lender’s role.

1. Check your credit report before applying

Review the report for accounts you do not recognize, incorrect balances, payment records that do not match your receipts, and enquiries you did not authorize. A mistake can affect how a lender views your application, so identify and raise it before submitting new applications where possible.

If information is inaccurate, dispute it with CIBIL and/or the institution that supplied the information. CIBIL says it cannot independently alter lender-reported records. The Ministry of Finance has also said borrowers may request correction or updating through the concerned credit information company or credit institution. CIBIL’s dispute-resolution guidance describes its process.

2. Bring payments up to date and protect your record

Pay existing loan EMIs and credit-card dues on time. Missed payments on an account where you are a joint borrower, co-signer or guarantor can also affect your credit access, so check those accounts rather than monitoring only loans in your own name.

TransUnion CIBIL identifies timely payment as a core credit-health practice. If a payment is already overdue, bringing it current can prevent further missed-payment reporting, but it does not erase accurate historical information from your report.

3. Reduce card balances and avoid unnecessary applications

High credit-card utilisation can weigh on your score. Pay down revolving balances where you can, and avoid applying for several loans or cards in a short period. CIBIL says multiple loan applications over a short period may affect your score; each loan application can generate a hard enquiry.

There is no guaranteed utilisation percentage in the cited guidance that will secure a particular score or loan decision. Checking your own CIBIL score is different: CIBIL says a self-check does not reduce it. CIBIL’s credit-score guidance explains the distinction between checking your own report and lender enquiries.

4. Match the loan request to what you can repay

Before applying, calculate how much room remains in your budget after existing EMIs and essential expenses. CIBIL says lenders may consider income, employment and EMI repayment patterns, and advises borrowers to borrow within their means. If a smaller loan would meet the need with a more manageable EMI, request only that amount. A lower request may be a sound affordability decision, but it is not a guarantee of approval.

5. Compare written offers by total cost, not just EMI

If you receive offers, compare the full terms in writing. A low monthly instalment can reflect a longer repayment period, so also check the total amount repayable and the fees that apply.

  • Interest rate: Check the rate offered to you, not only an advertised starting rate.
  • Fees: Review processing charges, prepayment or foreclosure charges, and any other applicable fees.
  • Amount and tenure: Confirm the sanctioned amount and repayment period.
  • EMI and total repayment: Check that the instalment fits your budget and calculate the full cost over the tenure.
  • Eligibility and documents: Confirm the lender’s requirements and what you must submit before accepting.

CIBIL notes that personal-loan rates and fees vary by lender and borrower; amount, tenure and credit profile can also affect terms. Its personal-loan guidance discusses the factors and documentation involved. Do not choose an offer solely because it promises a quick decision.

What if you have no credit history?

No credit history is not the same as a low score. In a Lok Sabha answer dated 10 February 2025, the Ministry of Finance said RBI directions advise that a first-time borrower’s application should not be rejected solely because the borrower has no credit history. That does not guarantee approval: lenders may still assess income, employment, repayment capacity and other eligibility criteria. The answer also says the concerned credit information company or credit institution is required to take appropriate steps to update credit information within thirty days of a correction request. What a low score does—and does not—tell you

A low score is a warning that borrowing may be harder or costlier, not a promise of an offer and not proof that every lender will refuse. The reviewed official sources do not establish a universal minimum CIBIL score for a personal loan or a reliable approval rate for low-score applicants. Treat lender-specific eligibility rules and the written terms you are actually offered as decisive.
