Perplexity’s acquisition of Carbon was a step toward connecting company information to AI search, not the launch of one universal Carbon connector. As of August 2026, enterprises use a wider Perplexity ecosystem: file connectors for selected cloud documents, application and data connectors through Computer, custom remote MCP connectors, and a separate Carbon Arc connector for licensed alternative market data.

What Perplexity acquired when it bought Carbon

On December 18, 2024, Perplexity announced that it had acquired Carbon, a retrieval and data-connector company. Perplexity described a goal of bringing information from services such as Notion and Google Docs, as well as internal databases, cloud storage and document repositories, into its answer engine. Perplexity’s acquisition announcement set out that ambition; it did not establish that Carbon technology powers every connector Perplexity offers today.

That distinction matters because “Carbon” now refers to several different things in discussions of Perplexity:

  • Carbon: the acquired company and its connectivity technology and team.
  • Perplexity Connectors: the current user-facing ways to connect files and services to Perplexity.
  • Computer: Perplexity’s product for retrieving information and carrying out multi-step work across connected applications.
  • Carbon Arc: a separately documented connector for authorized alternative-data datasets, not a general-purpose gateway into an employer’s files.

Perplexity has not published a complete technical map attributing each current connector to Carbon. The practical question for a buyer is therefore which present-day connector fits the data and workflow—not whether a product called “Carbon” can connect everything.

Which Perplexity connection fits your data?

What you want to use Perplexity route What it means in practice
Company documents Enterprise file connectors Connect Google Drive, OneDrive, SharePoint, Dropbox or Box, then select the folders and files to sync.
Business applications Connectors used with Computer Perplexity documents integrations including Gmail, Outlook, GitHub, Linear, Slack, Notion and Salesforce, among other tools.
Structured warehouse data Computer connectors Documented examples include Snowflake and Databricks; useful results still depend on access, data quality and how the source is modeled.
A proprietary internal system Remote MCP connector An organization can expose its own tools or data sources through MCP; enterprise administrators can share and govern connectors across the organization.
Alternative financial and market data Carbon Arc connector Query licensed Carbon Arc datasets, subject to the user’s Carbon Arc plan and data entitlements.

Perplexity’s enterprise file-connector documentation lists the five storage services. Its Computer documentation lists application and data integrations. A March 2026 product update says Pro, Max and Enterprise subscribers can use remote MCP connectors, with Enterprise administrators able to share and govern them: Perplexity’s March 13, 2026 changelog.

What Carbon Arc does—and does not do

Carbon Arc is the route for users who need its licensed alternative-data content, such as credit-card spending and company insights. Perplexity’s setup guide gives example prompts including “Using Carbon Arc, show me Walmart Credit Card Spend” and “Using Carbon Arc, what was Walmart’s card spend in 2024?” The returned information is limited by the user’s Carbon Arc plan and purchased data entitlements. It is not documented as a way to index a company’s own Drive, Slack, CRM or internal database.

Carbon Arc requires an active Carbon Arc subscription and Perplexity Pro connector access; an Enterprise administrator may also need to enable it. Carbon Arc lists Professional, Business and Enterprise plans, with Enterprise access subject to custom approval and provisioning. The Perplexity guide describes a promotion code, PERPLEXITY30, as offering one free month to eligible Professional and Business signups. That is a conditional promotion, not evidence that the integration or subscription is generally free. The guide was updated July 16, 2026; check the vendor’s current terms before relying on plan availability or a promotion. Carbon Arc connection instructions and requirements.

How to connect Carbon Arc in Perplexity

  1. In Perplexity, open Settings under the organization icon.
  2. Open Connectors and search for Carbon Arc.
  3. Select its connector tile, then click Add or Enable.
  4. Sign in with Carbon Arc credentials through OAuth or SSO, and confirm that Perplexity shows the connector as connected.
  5. Start a new query. Invoke the source with @Carbon Arc, or click the + icon and choose Carbon Arc under Connectors and sources.

The documented flow does not require a separate Carbon Arc API key. If the connector is unavailable, check that the Carbon Arc subscription and Perplexity access are active and ask the Enterprise administrator whether the connector is enabled.

How enterprise file connectors work

For company documents, an administrator can make a storage service available to the organization, but each user authenticates their own account and chooses the folders or individual files to sync. Connecting an account does not automatically make the entire drive searchable: Perplexity’s FAQ says whole-drive synchronization is not currently supported. The FAQ lists a 50 MB file-size limit and supported formats including Google Docs, Slides and Sheets; PDF, DOCX, XLSX, CSV, PPTX, MD, JSON and TXT; and specified audio and video formats. Check the live documentation for the full format list and any changes.

  • Synced files update automatically when source files change.
  • Deleted files, files whose access is revoked, and synchronized files associated with a disconnected source account are removed from Perplexity.
  • A user can search connected files as sources or attach individual files to a query.
  • A personal repository is searchable only by the user who synced it. Files in shared projects may be searchable by project members, while access to the original file remains subject to its source-system permissions.

These rules are described in Perplexity’s enterprise connector FAQ and file-connector guide.

What changes for security and governance

Perplexity says connected-file credentials are encrypted in transit and at rest, synchronized files are stored in AWS S3, and connected-file material is not used to train its models. The company also says the described infrastructure is covered by SOC 2 Type II controls and that custom retention policies may be available on request. These are vendor statements about the documented Perplexity service, not an independent assurance about every connected source or every connector. Review the applicable terms and controls for each source system and deployment.

Perplexity says Enterprise administrators control which services are available. Its Computer documentation says enterprise data is excluded from model training, that Computer follows organizational retention settings, and that Computer activity, connector use and credit consumption appear in enterprise audit logs. Because Computer can do more than retrieve documents—it can interact with connected applications and perform actions such as sending email, creating files or running workflows—organizations should treat it as an action-capable system, not just a search box. Set approval, access and audit practices accordingly.

Sharing an answer also requires care: a shared response may contain references to synchronized files, but a recipient’s ability to open an underlying file depends on permissions in the original storage service. Seeing an answer is not the same as being granted access to its source.

What the connectors make easier—and what they do not

The improvement is mainly in access and orchestration. OAuth or SSO can avoid a manual API-key setup for Carbon Arc; file synchronization can avoid repeatedly uploading revised documents; natural-language queries can call connected sources; and MCP can expose an internal tool without waiting for a bespoke Perplexity-native integration. Computer can combine connected information with web research and produce an output or take an action.

That convenience does not replace enterprise data work. Organizations still need to decide who may connect a source, which users and folders may be searched, how source permissions and leavers are handled, what retention rules apply, and how answers are audited. They also need to assess freshness, data quality, rate limits, usage costs and—especially for warehouses—whether fields and business definitions are clear enough for reliable answers.

  • Incomplete answers: a result may reflect only the user’s permissions, selected folders, administrator settings or purchased Carbon Arc entitlements; a connected source does not imply organization-wide coverage.
  • Freshness varies: file connectors synchronize selected content, while other integrations can use different retrieval mechanisms. Do not assume every source is queried live.
  • Permission behavior is connector-specific: validate it for the systems and sharing workflows your organization will actually use rather than assuming universal permission fidelity.
  • MCP adds ownership: custom connectors can extend coverage, but their servers, access controls and ongoing maintenance remain part of the organization’s operational responsibility.
  • Search and action have different risks: retrieval can expose sensitive information; actions such as sending messages or creating records can change business systems. Apply controls appropriate to each.

Pricing and the total cost to evaluate

The prices below are Perplexity’s documented Enterprise pricing signals, not a quote for every region or contract. The credit documentation warns that prices, credit ranges and included allowances may vary by region or plan and can change. Verify current terms before budgeting.

Cost component Documented detail Budget implication
Enterprise Pro $40 per seat monthly or $400 annually, per Perplexity’s Enterprise FAQ. Potential fit for teams focused on research and connected information; the listed seat price is separate from other costs.
Enterprise Max $325 per seat monthly or $3,250 annually, per Perplexity’s Enterprise Max documentation. Substantially higher seat cost; assess whether heavier use and premium capabilities justify it.
Computer credits The Enterprise pricing materials list 500 monthly credits for Pro and 15,000 for Max; the member guide described Pro access as “coming soon.” Additional credits are listed at $1 per 100 credits. Confirm actual availability and included allowance for your organization, since the documentation is not fully consistent about Pro access.
Carbon Arc Separate Professional and Business subscriptions; Enterprise access requires custom approval. Exact public prices are not stated in the cited Perplexity guide. Relevant only if the team needs Carbon Arc’s licensed alternative-data datasets.
API usage Enterprise Pro and Max seats do not include API access or API credits. Teams building their own applications should budget API usage separately.
Implementation and governance Not stated as a standard line-item price in the cited documentation. Allow for connector configuration, MCP ownership, permissions review and evaluation work.

How to decide whether Perplexity is the right layer

Perplexity is worth evaluating when a team wants conversational access to both web research and selected internal context in one interface. Research, strategy, consulting, finance, legal and knowledge teams may find that combination useful. Carbon Arc is a narrower fit for teams that already need its alternative financial or market data; it is not a substitute for ordinary company-document search.

Before a pilot, map the workload to the connector and test representative questions against known answers. Check source coverage, permission behavior, update timing, citations or source links, and whether users can distinguish internal material from web results. For a warehouse, test whether users can ask meaningful questions without hidden schema knowledge or a semantic layer. For Computer, test action controls and audit review separately from retrieval quality.

Compare against the ecosystem already in place rather than treating all products as interchangeable. Organizations centered on Microsoft 365 can assess Microsoft 365 Copilot; Google Workspace organizations can assess Gemini for Workspace or Google Cloud; Glean is a candidate for workplace search and knowledge discovery; Coveo targets enterprise search and relevance use cases; Elastic is a more infrastructure-oriented search and retrieval option. These are candidates for evaluation, not price-equivalent alternatives; the relevant differences are connector coverage, permission synchronization, deployment, agent actions, governance and pricing transparency. Microsoft 365 Copilot, Google Workspace Gemini, Glean, Coveo, Elastic.

Verdict

Carbon helped Perplexity pursue enterprise data connectivity, but the current offering is a broader connector platform, not one unrestricted Carbon integration. For company files and applications, evaluate Perplexity’s file connectors, Computer integrations and MCP support. Choose Carbon Arc only when its licensed alternative-data content is the need. The platform can reduce friction in getting information into AI-assisted research; it does not remove the need to govern access, validate answers or manage the systems behind the data.
