OpenAI Said ChatGPT Enterprise Had More Than 260 Business Customers by January 2024

In January 2024, OpenAI said ChatGPT Enterprise had been adopted by more than 260 businesses, representing over 150,000 distinct employee users. That was an early snapshot—about four months after the product launched in late August 2023—not a current customer count. OpenAI’s later claim of more than 1 million business customers covers a broader group and cannot be read as 1 million ChatGPT Enterprise customers.

What OpenAI disclosed about ChatGPT Enterprise

OpenAI COO Brad Lightcap gave the figures to Bloomberg, which VentureBeat reported on January 12, 2024: more than 260 businesses had adopted ChatGPT Enterprise, with more than 150,000 distinct employee users across those organizations. The disclosure covered the period from the product’s late-August 2023 launch to January 2024; it was a company-reported snapshot, not an audited customer database. VentureBeat’s report details the disclosure.

What the two numbers mean—and what they do not

  • More than 260 refers to business organizations or accounts.
  • More than 150,000 refers to distinct employee users, not necessarily paid seats, simultaneously active users, or users at production scale.

Dividing the two headline figures gives roughly 577 users per organization (150,000 ÷ 260). That is only an illustrative calculation, not an average OpenAI reported: both inputs are rounded lower-bound figures, and the source does not provide the distribution of users across customers.

Why the early milestone mattered

For a product only a few months old, reported adoption across hundreds of organizations and more than 150,000 employees suggested meaningful early demand for centrally managed generative-AI tools. It also indicated that some companies were willing to buy an enterprise product rather than rely only on individual accounts or wait for internally built systems. Those are reasonable readings of the adoption figures, not proof of business results.

Enterprise buyers were also weighing output reliability and hallucinations, privacy and governance, and regulatory compliance. At the time, OpenAI’s stated position was that enterprise data was excluded from model training by default. That is a historical statement, not a substitute for checking current terms. OpenAI’s current ChatGPT Enterprise overview describes enterprise privacy and security, centralized administration, and advanced ChatGPT capabilities.

Which companies were named?

Examples associated with ChatGPT’s business offerings in the contemporary report included Block, Canva, Carlyle, The Estée Lauder Companies, PwC, and Zapier. They are examples, not a complete customer list, and the report does not establish that every named organization used ChatGPT Enterprise specifically or deployed it at the same scale.

Does the 2025 figure of 1 million mean Enterprise had 1 million customers?

No. On November 5, 2025, OpenAI announced more than 1 million business customers worldwide, but defined the total to include organizations paying for business use through either ChatGPT for Work or direct consumption of OpenAI models through the developer platform. The broader total therefore combines workplace ChatGPT customers with API customers; it is not a like-for-like update to the 260-plus Enterprise organizations reported in January 2024. OpenAI’s announcement explains the scope.

OpenAI’s 2025 enterprise report discusses usage across its business customer base, including activity among ChatGPT Enterprise users, but does not provide a new standalone Enterprise customer total comparable to the 2024 figure. As of the latest cited disclosures, a directly comparable current Enterprise count has not been established.

What the customer count cannot tell you

  • ChatGPT Enterprise revenue, contract size, minimum spend, discounts, or renewal rates.
  • How many employees were active weekly or monthly, or how many users were licensed and paying.
  • Whether customers achieved productivity gains or deployed the product broadly across their organizations.
  • The industry or geographic breakdown of the reported organizations.

For those reasons, a seat-price estimate cannot reliably convert the 150,000-user figure into revenue. OpenAI’s enterprise pricing is sales-led in the cited materials, and contract terms and paid seat counts are not disclosed. The product should also not be conflated with Business, Edu, or API usage: these are distinct offerings or channels, and OpenAI’s Enterprise overview distinguishes Enterprise from related plans.

What enterprise buyers should take from the figures

The 2024 disclosure is evidence of early sales traction, not a measure of financial performance or deployment success. A buyer considering a workplace assistant should compare governance, privacy terms, identity and administration controls, integrations, user needs, and total contract cost. ChatGPT Enterprise is a centrally managed workplace offering; ChatGPT Business is a separate workspace tier; the API is a usage-based route for building AI into software and workflows. Which is appropriate depends on whether employees need an off-the-shelf assistant or the organization intends to build and operate its own applications.
