Spot can give you ownership of the asset, depending on how it is held and the platform’s terms. A perpetual gives you contractual price exposure and may add funding payments, margin calls, and liquidation risk. Neither route is risk-free, and costs and access depend on the specific platform, contract, and jurisdiction.
How spot trading differs from a perpetual
| Feature | Spot crypto | Perpetual futures |
|---|---|---|
| What you trade | The cryptocurrency in a cash-market transaction. | A derivative contract referencing an asset’s price; it is not the same as owning that asset. CFTC customer advisory |
| Expiration | No derivatives-contract expiry when you hold the asset. | No fixed expiration date by definition. CFTC chairman’s statement, May 29, 2026 |
| Ongoing costs | Platform trading fees and potentially spread, custody, or withdrawal charges; amounts vary. | Trading costs plus contract-specific funding payments that can vary with market conditions. Amounts vary by venue and contract. CFTC chairman’s statement, May 29, 2026 |
| Leverage and liquidation | An ordinary, unborrowed spot purchase does not involve derivative margin liquidation. Borrowed or leveraged spot products are a separate case. | Margin can amplify exposure; an adverse move can require more collateral or a position closeout, with losses potentially greater than the initial investment. CFTC customer advisory |
| Custody and platform risk | Depends on whether you or a platform holds the asset and what safeguards apply. | Depends on the venue, clearing and collateral arrangements, and contract terms. |
What spot trading means—and what you own
A spot purchase is a cash-market transaction: you pay money to acquire cryptocurrency. The CFTC gives buying bitcoin for a personal wallet as one example, but a spot customer may instead leave assets with a platform. Check the custody arrangement and the rights the platform gives you rather than assuming every spot purchase is self-custodied or gives identical protections. The CFTC’s virtual-currency trading advisory warns that many cash markets may lack government supervision and identifies risks including volatility, manipulation, cyber threats, platform safeguards, and potential conflicts of interest.
How perpetual futures work
A perpetual is a derivative with no fixed expiration date. In a May 29, 2026 statement, CFTC Chairman Michael S. Selig described periodic funding-rate payments between counterparties as a mechanism designed to keep the contract price relatively aligned with the underlying asset’s spot price. The funding formula, payment interval, caps, collateral rules, and settlement method are specific to the contract and venue. A payment’s direction and amount can therefore differ across products and market conditions. Read the CFTC chairman’s statement.
Not having a scheduled expiry distinguishes a perpetual from dated futures, which expire and may need to be replaced to maintain exposure. That replacement is called rolling. The SEC and CFTC staff explain that futures prices can differ from spot and that rollovers can affect fund outcomes in their alert about funds holding bitcoin futures. That alert concerns funds and dated futures; it does not establish a perpetual’s funding rate or a retail trader’s account fees. SEC/CFTC staff alert: Funds Trading in Bitcoin Futures.

Does a perpetual futures position give you cryptocurrency?
Not necessarily. A futures position is contractual price exposure, not automatically ownership or delivery of the referenced crypto. The CFTC’s general virtual-currency futures advisory says customers may not be entitled to receive the actual currency; it describes most of the futures products it discusses as cash-settled against a contract-specified index or auction price. That general advisory is not a specification for every perpetual. Check the particular contract’s settlement method, reference index, and terms before trading. CFTC customer advisory.
Compare the full cost, not just the trading fee
A displayed maker or taker fee is only one possible cost. For the holding period you expect, check the venue’s current fee schedule and the relevant contract’s funding history. Also account for spread, collateral terms, and any applicable custody or withdrawal charges. Funding is variable and contract-specific, so there is no universal perpetual funding rate or general rule that perpetuals are cheaper or more expensive than spot.

- BUILT FOR YOUR MARKET, FUTURES, STOCKS, FOREX, OPTIONS & CRYPTO: 4X is a mindset and process journal, not a strategy tool tied to one instrument. You never stare at a blank page.
- RATE YOUR EXECUTION, NOT YOUR RESULT: Your platform tracks the P&L. Nothing tracks the why. For dated futures, rolling an expiring position can introduce a cost or benefit because futures prices may differ from spot. This is distinct from perpetual funding: a perpetual has no scheduled expiry to roll, but it may have recurring funding payments. Neither mechanism has a universal cost that can be inferred without the specific product and holding period.
Why leverage makes perpetuals riskier for many traders
Where a perpetual is traded on margin, the position can be larger than the collateral posted. The CFTC explains that futures leverage amplifies the effect of price moves; an adverse move can require additional margin or lead to a closeout, and losses may exceed the initial investment. CFTC customer advisory.

There is no reliable universal liquidation price. Before opening a position, read the exact contract rules for initial and maintenance margin, mark-price methodology, collateral haircuts, liquidation fees, and whether margin is isolated or shared across positions. Those terms determine how the platform handles losses and collateral.
Unborrowed spot avoids derivative margin liquidation, but it does not eliminate loss: the asset’s price can fall, and custody or platform problems can affect access to assets. The comparison is therefore not “safe spot versus risky futures”; it is direct asset exposure versus a derivative position whose additional margin mechanics can magnify losses.

Availability and regulation depend on location and product
On May 29, 2026, the CFTC announced a specific order permitting a designated contract market to list a bitcoin-spot-referencing perpetual. The release also described case-by-case review for perpetuals referencing other asset classes. This is a U.S.-specific development, not a statement that every perpetual is authorized, available to retail customers, or accessible in every country. Verify the venue’s registration, local eligibility, and product disclosures with the relevant regulator and venue. CFTC: Policy statement concerning the listing of perpetual contracts.
