PepsiCo and Cargill announced a plan to advance regenerative agriculture practices across 240,000 acres of Iowa farmland from 2025 through 2030. The target applies to their shared Iowa corn supply chain; it is not a report that 240,000 acres have already enrolled or changed practices. Practical Farmers of Iowa (PFI) is set to lead local implementation, while participating farmers are promised tailored agronomic guidance, incentive payments and technical resources.
What the Iowa partnership covers
In an announcement dated July 15, 2025, PepsiCo and Cargill said they would work to advance regenerative practices on 240,000 Iowa farmland acres over the 2025–2030 period. The collaboration is focused on their shared corn supply chain: Cargill sources corn from local farmers for ingredients used in PepsiCo products. The companies cited Iowa’s contribution of more than 15% of U.S. corn supply in 2024 as context for the effort. Cargill’s announcement
The 240,000 acres are an announced target, not a verified enrollment count or completed result. The release does not report acreage already reached, the number of participating farms, a program budget or measured environmental or financial outcomes.
How the program is supposed to work
PFI is the local implementation lead named in the announcement. It is assigned to tailor advice and recommendations to local conditions and planted crops, manage farmer enrollment, and handle measurement, reporting and verification. That assignment does not establish that an independent auditor will verify results, and the announcement contains no verification findings.

- 1. Premium Certified Purple Alfalfa Seeds (100 pcs) - High-quality, certified non-GMO Medicago sativa seeds — ideal for regenerative farming, sustainable gardening, or as a high-nutrition forage crop.
- 2. Excellent Regenerative Cover Crop - Improves soil health by fixing nitrogen, reducing erosion, and increasing organic matter — a natural way to restore fertility and soil structure.
- 3. High Germination & Vigorous Growth - Fast-germinating, drought-tolerant plants that thrive in USDA Zones 3–10; suitable for hay production, pasture, or large-scale field growing.
- 4. Attracts Pollinators & Supports Biodiversity - Purple alfalfa blooms attract bees, especially for alfalfa honey production, while providing valuable forage for wildlife and beneficial insects.
- 5. Versatile & Sustainable Use - Perfect for regenerative agriculture, livestock feed, green manure, or soil improvement — a multi-purpose crop for eco-friendly growers.
The companies describe the partnership as a way to support farmers adopting practices while strengthening supply-chain resilience. PepsiCo Chief Sustainability Officer Jim Andrew said working across the supply chain could accelerate adoption and contribute to healthier soil, reduced emissions, crop yields and farmer livelihoods. Cargill Chief Sustainability Officer Pilar Cruz described the aim as practical, measurable results beginning on farms. These are corporate expectations, not demonstrated outcomes for the Iowa initiative.
What farmers are promised—and what is not specified

It does not state the payment amount or schedule, eligible practices, farm-size thresholds, qualification criteria, application deadlines or whether enrollment is currently open. Farmers should contact PFI to confirm current eligibility and availability before making plans. The announcement identifies PFI as the implementation lead but does not provide a specific application link. See the partnership announcement
Which practices are included?
The announcement names corn as the focus crop but does not identify practices that participating farms must adopt. Cargill’s broader regenerative agriculture overview gives cover crops as an example and names winter rye and crimson clover. Those are general examples from Cargill, not confirmed requirements or recommendations for this Iowa partnership; suitability depends on local conditions and crop rotation. How the Iowa target differs from the companies’ larger goals
The Iowa collaboration sits within broader company targets, but those larger figures should not be mistaken for progress on this specific program.
| Figure | What it refers to | Status and source |
|---|---|---|
| 240,000 acres | Iowa shared corn supply chain | Partnership target for 2025–2030, announced July 15, 2025; not reported acreage achieved. Cargill announcement |
| 10 million acres | PepsiCo company-wide goal | Goal for regenerative, restorative or protective practices by 2030; PepsiCo said it had reached approximately 3.5 million acres through 2024. May 2025 goal update |
| 4.7 million acres globally | PepsiCo company-wide progress | Reported in PepsiCo’s 2026 progress announcement; not an Iowa partnership measurement. 2026 update |
| 10 million acres | Cargill North American objective | Cargill’s aim to advance regenerative agriculture across North American farmland by 2030, as described in the partnership announcement; distinct from the Iowa target. Cargill announcement |
PepsiCo’s 2025 update also describes a global sourcing operation spanning 35 crops and ingredients from more than 60 countries. That corporate context helps explain the scale of its agriculture goals; it does not change the Iowa program’s geography or establish its results. PepsiCo’s 2025 goal update
