The headline’s “next week” referred to that 2024 handover, which is complete—not an upcoming change.
When did Peel Health Campus change hands?
The WA Government announced in November 2020 that it would end private operation of Peel Health Campus (PHC) and return services to the public sector. The original operating contract was expected to end in August 2023, but the handover was delayed. A 7 August 2024 report said the transfer was expected the following week; on 13 August, the Government and SMHS confirmed the hospital had entered public operation and management.
In practical terms, Ramsay Health Care ceased operating PHC and the campus became government-operated and SMHS-managed. The Government described this as delivery of an election commitment. The Government’s 13 August 2024 announcement and SMHS’s campus notice, also published that day, confirmed the change.
Did patients need to rebook appointments?
No. The transition notice said existing and booked appointments transferred automatically to SMHS, and patients, families and carers did not need to take action. It also said free parking remained available and hospital phone numbers stayed the same at the time of transition. These are details from the August 2024 notice, not a guarantee that every arrangement remains unchanged today; check current hospital information for present-day details.

What changed for staff and hospital services?
The Government said 95 per cent of PHC’s existing staff transitioned to the public system. After recruitment, it expected the workforce to total nearly 1,100 doctors, nurses, allied health professionals and support staff. It also announced an insourced pharmacy service so patients discharged from hospital would not be invoiced for their medications.
SMHS’s 2024–25 annual report later described approximately 100 additional clinical and non-clinical staff, including increased medical and nursing personnel on inpatient wards. It also said an in-house pharmacy service replaced the previous private subcontractor model. Those figures describe the transition and the subsequent reporting period; they should not be read as a current workforce count.

What redevelopment was announced?
The Government’s August 2024 announcement outlined a redevelopment then budgeted at $152 million, with the budget to be updated after final planning. Its intended scope included more than 60 additional inpatient beds, including mental health beds; 15 palliative care hospice beds; an additional operating theatre; a Mental Health Emergency Centre; 12 chemotherapy places; more outpatient services; a new medical imaging building; and expansion of the day procedure unit. These were announced plans, not confirmation that every element was completed or that the scope and budget remain unchanged.
The 7 August 2024 report described a $152 million plan that included 60 additional inpatient beds, a mental health emergency centre, another operating theatre and emergency department reconfiguration. Is construction underway?
The latest official project information cited here was updated on 26 November 2025. It describes a new purpose-built public hospital on the existing site, says the campus will remain open during construction, and lists forward works involving access roads and car parks, power infrastructure and site-services upgrades. It expected main works to begin in June 2026, subject to approvals.
That page predates the expected start date, so it does not establish whether main construction began in June 2026 or whether the schedule changed. The project’s actual construction status should be checked against a newer official update. The official redevelopment page lists future plans including an expanded emergency department, a dedicated Mental Health Emergency Centre, more inpatient and specialist palliative care beds, expanded chemotherapy and outpatient services, and modern operating theatres and clinical support spaces.
