It is too soon to know whether downtown workers—tech employees or otherwise—will follow PCC back. PCC opened its smaller Corner Market at Rainier Square on July 15, 2025, but no source reviewed reports the store’s sales, customer mix, or worker patronage. Downtown activity has improved, though the available figures remain below pre-pandemic benchmarks and are not evidence of demand for this particular store.
What PCC brought back—and what changed
The new PCC Corner Market is at 1320 Fourth Avenue in Rainier Square. It is a smaller, prepared-food-oriented format, not a reopening of the full-service grocery store that PCC closed in January 2024. PCC announced the opening date as July 15, 2025. PCC describes the Corner Market as its first small-format store, intended for quick breakfast and lunch, after-work grab-and-go, smaller shopping trips, and everyday essentials. The company lists deli selections from PCC Market Kitchen, hot and salad bars, milk and eggs, fresh sushi, ice cream, beer, and wine. These are PCC’s descriptions of its offering and intended use, not independent measures of prices, availability, convenience, or customer satisfaction.
Why the previous downtown store closed
PCC opened a full-service downtown store in 2022, after pandemic-related delays. It was presented as serving office workers and downtown residents amid a difficult recovery for the core, according to a Seattle Times report republished by the Downtown Seattle Association.

The store closed in January 2024. GeekWire reported that the location underperformed and was unprofitable. In a 2024 member-owner letter, PCC CEO Krish Srinivasan said, “This location was the site of a store that we closed in January 2024 because we could not see a way to profitably operate a full-service grocery store there.” PCC later said the earlier store’s two-year tenure informed its decision to try a smaller format, particularly because prepared foods and deli had performed well. Are downtown workers coming back?
Downtown Seattle worker activity was stronger in 2025 than a year earlier in the snapshots reported, but the figures describe the broader downtown area—not PCC customers—and should not be treated as a single, directly comparable trend line.
- August 2024: GeekWire reported that the Downtown Seattle Association’s figure was more than 90,000 weekday workers, equivalent to 62% of July 2019 levels. This is a dated snapshot, not a current count. (GeekWire)
- March 2025: Axios reported the DSA estimate of 101,000 average daily workers, 12% above March 2024 and the highest March figure since 2020. The same report put unique visitors above 2.5 million that month, or 92% of pre-pandemic levels. These are separate measures of downtown activity, not evidence of PCC demand. (Axios)
- June 2025: Axios reported 152,000 average daily weekday workers, or 66% of June 2019 levels, and 109,845 downtown residents. The DSA had revised its worker-foot-traffic methodology to align coverage with its 12-neighborhood visitor footprint; the same report said visitor counts still trailed pre-pandemic levels. (Axios)
The August 2024, March 2025, and June 2025 figures cover different dates, and the June comparison uses revised methodology. They do not establish how many people work near Rainier Square on a given day, how often they shop at PCC, or whether tech employees make up a meaningful share of customers.

Will hungry tech workers follow?
PCC has said it is targeting downtown workers along with residents and visitors, and its prepared-food focus is designed to serve quick meals and smaller trips. But the available evidence does not show whether workers have returned to this particular store—or whether tech workers are among them in any distinctive way. No store-specific sales, traffic, or customer-demographic disclosure is reported in the cited sources.
For now, the answer is unresolved: the format and intended audience make downtown workers a plausible customer group, while broad worker counts alone cannot confirm that they are patronizing PCC Corner Market.
