PayPal’s crypto service lets eligible customers buy, hold, sell and transfer supported cryptocurrencies, but the available assets and features depend on country, account type and current service status. In the U.S., PayPal lists seven assets, including its PYUSD stablecoin. PayPal provides the account interface; Paxos issues PYUSD. Before using the service, check the quote and fees shown for your transaction, confirm that the feature is available to your account, and understand that crypto held through PayPal is not a bank deposit or FDIC- or SIPC-insured.
What PayPal’s crypto service does
For U.S. customers covered by its cryptocurrency terms, PayPal supports buying, holding, selling, sending and receiving supported crypto assets. Consumer accounts may also be able to convert PYUSD to another supported crypto asset. The exact functions can vary by account type and location; having a PayPal balance does not by itself mean that every crypto feature is available to you.
PayPal says customers must accept its cryptocurrency terms and keep their account information and identification current. In the U.S., PayPal Digital, Inc. has provided crypto services since May 19, 2026. PayPal, Inc. continues to provide U.S. dollar and foreign-currency balance services, according to PayPal’s U.S. Cryptocurrency FAQs, accessed September 28, 2026.
Which cryptocurrencies are supported on PayPal?
PayPal’s U.S. FAQ listed these seven assets on September 28, 2026:
#1 Best Overall
- PayPal USD (PYUSD)
- Bitcoin (BTC)
- Ethereum (ETH)
- Litecoin (LTC)
- Bitcoin Cash (BCH)
- Solana (SOL)
- Chainlink (LINK)
This is a U.S. list, not a promise that the same assets or features are available in every country. PayPal’s terms also allow availability to vary by account type and some U.S. locations. Check the crypto options displayed in your own account before planning a purchase or transfer.
Some web features had an app limitation
In its FAQ accessed September 28, 2026, PayPal said users could create or manage recurring crypto buys, convert eligible PayPal-listed crypto to or from PYUSD, sell eligible crypto directly to PYUSD, and convert PayPal balance to PYUSD through the web Crypto Hub while the app was being updated. Existing recurring buys were not affected, and PayPal said it would notify customers when app support returned. That is a dated status update, not confirmation of app availability today; check the live FAQ or your account for current access.
What PYUSD is—and who issues it
PYUSD is a U.S. dollar-denominated stablecoin issued by Paxos, not PayPal. PayPal’s U.S. terms, last updated May 19, 2026, say Paxos issues PYUSD on Ethereum, Solana, Arbitrum and Stellar. A PayPal account balance does not identify which of those networks is associated with a particular PYUSD balance; PayPal says Paxos may issue the token on a supported network at its discretion.

What the $1 price means
PayPal’s terms describe PayPal Digital buying or selling PYUSD at $1.00 per token. Eligible holders may also be able to redeem directly through Paxos, subject to Paxos’s terms. This describes PayPal Digital’s stated transaction price and a separate redemption route; it is not a guarantee that PYUSD will trade for exactly $1 everywhere or that PayPal guarantees Paxos’s performance. PYUSD is not legal tender, and PayPal says neither PYUSD nor a Crypto Account is a deposit.

What PayPal says about reserves
PayPal’s terms say Paxos is obligated to fully back PYUSD with an equivalent amount of U.S. dollar bank deposits, U.S. Treasuries and U.S. Treasury reverse repurchase agreements held in custody for PYUSD holders. PayPal says those reserve assets do not include money-market funds. These are PayPal’s descriptions of Paxos’s obligations and reserves, not an independent audit in this article. PayPal also says customers are not entitled to earnings generated on reserve assets and that direct redemption is governed by Paxos’s terms.
How much PayPal crypto costs
PayPal’s May 19, 2026 U.S. terms say an exchange-rate spread applies when customers buy or sell crypto assets other than PYUSD in exchange for U.S. dollars, and when they convert PYUSD to another crypto asset. The displayed exchange rate includes an estimated 1.00% spread, but the actual spread may be higher or lower depending on market conditions. It is not a universal fixed fee.
Rank #3
PayPal says it shows the exchange rate and applicable transaction fees before confirmation. Review that quote at the time of the transaction: crypto prices can differ across exchanges, and PayPal’s FAQ says spreads and providers’ pricing structures can affect the price. A linked bank or debit-card issuer may charge a separate fee. Compare the total displayed cost for the exact transaction rather than assuming PayPal is the cheapest option.
Where PayPal crypto is available
PayPal’s dated announcements describe different rollouts, not one verified, current country-by-country availability list:

| United States | The U.S. FAQ accessed September 28, 2026 listed seven crypto assets and said PayPal Digital, Inc. had provided crypto services since May 19, 2026. | Check your location, account type and account screen; the terms allow features to vary. |
| United Kingdom | On November 17, 2025, PayPal announced the reintroduction of crypto functionality for eligible U.K. consumers. It named Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin, Bitcoin Cash, Solana, Chainlink and PYUSD, and said access began on web and iOS, with Android support “coming soon.” | This records the launch announcement, not the current Android status or a guarantee of eligibility for every U.K. customer. |
| 70 markets | On March 17, 2026, PayPal announced that it was making PYUSD available across 70 markets, naming examples including Colombia, Costa Rica, the Dominican Republic, Faroe Islands, Greenland, Guatemala, Honduras, Panama, Peru, Singapore, the U.K. and the U.S. It said access in remaining markets would follow in the coming weeks. | The announcement is not a verified live country list as of September 28, 2026, nor does it establish that every market has the same crypto functions. |
For current eligibility, check PayPal’s country-specific information and the options shown in your account. A rollout announcement is not enough to establish that a particular asset or transaction is available to you now.

Transfers, custody and what can go wrong
Check the asset and network before sending
PayPal warns that sending an unsupported crypto asset to a Crypto Account may result in permanent loss. Confirm both the asset and the compatible network at the destination before sending anything; a familiar token name alone is not enough to establish compatibility. Network conditions, transaction limits and destination support can affect whether a transfer goes through, how long it takes and what it costs.
A PayPal crypto balance is not a self-custody wallet
PayPal’s terms describe crypto balances as a recorded interest in pooled omnibus holdings rather than ownership of a specific identifiable token. The account balance therefore does not tell you which individual token or blockchain network is assigned to your holding. PayPal also says it may require customers to sell or transfer PYUSD if it ends support for the token. Anyone choosing an external wallet should verify that the wallet supports the exact asset and network before transferring.
Insurance, service interruptions and taxes
PayPal’s U.S. terms state that crypto assets are not insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC), the Securities Investor Protection Corporation (SIPC) or another public or private insurer, including against theft. Crypto held through the service is not equivalent to an insured bank balance. PayPal says network problems, service-provider issues, account limitations, downtime, legal requirements and other circumstances can delay, pause or restrict transactions.

How to decide whether PayPal fits your needs
PayPal can be a practical way to access supported crypto through an existing PayPal account, but convenience is only one part of the decision. Compare the service against alternatives available in your market using the details that affect your intended use:
- Availability: Are the asset and action you want—such as buying, converting or transferring—available for your country and account type?
- Total price: What exchange rate, spread and transaction fee does the service show before confirmation? Could your funding source add a separate charge?
- Control and custody: Do you want account-based custody, or do you need to manage an external wallet yourself? PayPal’s terms do not treat your balance as a particular identifiable token.
- Transfer needs: Does PayPal support the destination and network you plan to use, and are its limits and timing suitable? Network availability and costs can change.
- Risk and protections: Are you comfortable with crypto price volatility and platform, network and issuer risks without FDIC or SIPC insurance?
PayPal’s account integration does not establish that it is the lowest-cost or best fit for every customer. The right choice depends on the transaction you intend to make and the live terms and quote available to you.
