It cannot make invented qualifications true, guarantee an interview, or do an assessment that an employer expects you to complete yourself. Employers also use automation in recruitment, from routing applications to systems that may influence decisions. The practical questions are what the tool is doing, how much human judgment is involved, and whether its use is transparent and fair.
How AI can help with a job search
Use AI as a preparation and editing aid, not as a substitute for your judgment or experience. It can help turn a job description into a checklist of requirements, suggest questions to research about an employer, brainstorm examples from your actual work, and generate practice interview questions.
For a résumé or cover letter, give the tool only accurate information and ask it to clarify, organize or tailor that material. Then check every detail against your records and rewrite generic passages in your own voice. AI-generated text can sound polished while saying little that distinguishes you. Daniel Zhao, chief economist at Glassdoor, told the Associated Press that hiring managers can recognize generic AI customization, making it harder for an application to stand out (Associated Press, 26 March 2026).
Survey results show that some candidates are using AI to write application materials, but they do not show that doing so improves hiring outcomes. In Gartner’s 4Q24 survey of 3,290 job candidates, reported in 2025, 39% said they had used AI during the application process. Among those AI users, 54% said they used it to generate résumé or CV text and 50% to generate cover-letter text (Gartner, 31 July 2025). These are self-reported use figures, not evidence that AI-written applications get more interviews or offers.

Useful ways to use it
- Ask it to extract the role’s stated requirements into a preparation checklist; verify the list against the original posting.
- Use it to brainstorm examples from your real experience that demonstrate a requirement, then select and describe the examples yourself.
- Ask for interview practice questions based on the role and rehearse answers aloud in your own words.
- Use it to improve clarity and structure in a draft built from accurate details about your work.
- Research the employer using its public materials, and verify any claims the tool makes against those sources.
What not to delegate or misrepresent
Do not invent experience, credentials, results, skills or responsibilities to make an application look stronger. Check every AI-generated claim and remove anything you cannot substantiate. Do not use a tool to impersonate you or conceal who is completing an assessment.
Read the employer’s instructions before using AI. If they prohibit AI or outside assistance for an assessment, follow that rule. Ordinary preparation is different from using a tool during a live interview or on work intended to demonstrate your unaided ability. If the instructions are unclear, ask the recruiter whether the restriction applies to preparation, drafting, or the assessment itself. The evidence available does not establish one disclosure rule that applies to every employer and jurisdiction.

Do not waste time on hidden white-text keywords or similar supposed shortcuts. Daniel Chait, CEO of Greenhouse, told the Associated Press: “There’s no secret keyword you can put in, that’s just wasting your time. Don’t bother doing that.” (Associated Press, 26 March 2026.)
Be thoughtful about what you enter into an AI service. The sources cited here do not establish one privacy rule for every tool; avoid submitting sensitive identifiers or confidential information unless you understand how the service handles it and have a sound reason to share it.

What candidate surveys say about trust and risk
Use and trust are separate questions. In Gartner’s 1Q25 survey of 2,918 job candidates, reported in 2025, 26% said they trusted AI to evaluate them fairly; 32% were concerned AI might cause their applications to fail, and 25% said they trusted employers less when those employers used AI to evaluate candidate information (Gartner, 31 July 2025). These are respondents’ reported views, not measurements of how accurately any particular system evaluates candidates.
Gartner also reported that 6% of 3,000 candidates surveyed in 2Q25 admitted participating in interview fraud, including having someone else pose as them or posing as another person. That is a self-reported result from that survey sample, not an estimate of the share of all jobseekers who commit fraud. Misrepresentation can undermine an employer’s assessment and put the candidate’s credibility at risk.

How employers may use recruitment automation
“AI in recruitment” can mean different things. A tool may organize or route applications; it may assist a human reviewer; or an automated system may make a decision without meaningful human involvement. Those uses differ in their effect on candidates and should not be treated as interchangeable.
| Use | What it does | Key question for candidates |
|---|---|---|
| Organizing or routing | Helps process or direct applications. | Is the tool only handling workflow, or does it affect who advances? |
| Decision support | Provides information or recommendations to a human reviewer. | Does a person meaningfully review the information and apply judgment? |
| Solely automated decision | A system makes a decision without meaningful human involvement. | What decision is being made, and what explanation or review is available? |
The UK Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) says automation can help employers process high application volumes quickly and consistently, but it can also create risks for individuals. In its 2026 report, the ICO said many employers it engaged with were likely relying on solely automated decisions in recruitment. The report was based on voluntary discussions with more than 30 employers between March 2025 and January 2026; the ICO expressly says this work was not an audit or investigation (ICO, Recruitment rewired, 2026).
Best Value
For UK employers, the ICO says candidates should receive adequate information about automated decision-making, meaningful human involvement should be applied consistently where used, and fairness and bias should be monitored. UK GDPR rules may apply where a decision based solely on personal information has legal or similarly significant effects. That legal discussion concerns the UK and solely automated decisions; it does not mean every use of a writing or screening tool has the same legal status. These findings do not establish requirements for other jurisdictions.

Generative AI is appearing in some workplaces, but adoption and attitudes vary. In the US Federal Reserve’s 2025 Survey of Household Economics and Decisionmaking, reported in 2026, 25% of workers said they had used generative AI at work in the prior month. In that survey, 44% agreed it could save time in their job and 20% worried it could replace their job. These are reported use and attitudes, not forecasts of job loss or proof of productivity gains (Federal Reserve, 2026 report on 2025 survey responses).
Use also differed by education in the same US survey: 43% of workers with a graduate degree reported using generative AI at work in the prior month, compared with 10% of workers with a high school education or less. Those figures describe the survey’s respondent groups; they should not be read as a universal pattern for every occupation or country. Separately, the UK Department for Science, Innovation and Technology’s AI Labour Market Survey 2025, published 28 January 2026, examines the AI-sector labour market, skills gaps and changing skill needs. Its scope is the AI sector, so it should not be generalized to all occupations without consulting its detailed findings (UK DSIT, 28 January 2026).
How to show skills that matter as work changes
Demonstrate relevant skills through specific examples rather than assuming that using AI or earning a certificate guarantees an advantage. Describe the problem you worked on, the steps you took, the tools you used where relevant, and the outcome you can substantiate. Pat Whelan, a product manager at LinkedIn, told the Associated Press that a résumé remains important but is not sufficient: “The resume is still an important part of the job search process but it is not sufficient. You need far more than your resume,” (Associated Press, 26 March 2026).
Recommended Free Tools
If AI is relevant to a role, be ready to explain your own use of it: what task it helped with, how you checked its output, and where your judgment mattered. The evidence here does not establish that AI-assisted applications cause better hiring results, or that any one credential or AI skill reliably improves a candidate’s prospects.
