If your PayPal balance looks wrong, start with Activity and the status of the specific transaction. The Dashboard shows your available balance, not necessarily every pending or incomplete payment. For U.S. accounts, use the checks below to find out whether money is pending, held, refunded to another payment method, or blocked by an account notice.
First, check what PayPal is counting as available
PayPal’s U.S. Help Center says, “The available balance shows how much money you have available in your primary currency.” That Dashboard figure excludes pending payments, recurring payments, and orders that have not been completed. To inspect funds in other currencies, open Wallet for a currency-by-currency breakdown. PayPal: What is my PayPal balance and how can I use it?
This distinction matters if the balance is lower than the total you expected: money tied to an unfinished transaction may not yet be available to spend or withdraw.
Check the transaction in Activity
Open Activity and select the payment, refund, or transfer in question. Review its amount, date, recipient or sender, currency, and status. An initiated payment is not necessarily a completed payment. What common statuses mean
- Pending: The payment may be under review or waiting for a payment source to clear. Check the transaction details for any next step or timing shown for that specific payment.
- On hold or held: The funds are temporarily unavailable while PayPal or another party handles an issue or review. The transaction or account notice should explain what, if anything, you need to do.
- Denied: The payment did not go through; the amount is credited back to the payment source as applicable. Check the transaction details to see where it was returned.
- Unclaimed: The recipient has not accepted the payment. It may be canceled if it is not accepted; check the transaction details for its current state.
- Completed: The transaction succeeded, but that does not by itself establish that the funds were added to the balance you are viewing. Check the transaction currency and Wallet’s currency details.
PayPal uses additional status labels, including temporary hold and refunded. Read the individual entry rather than inferring the result from the label alone. PayPal: What does the status of my payment mean?
If the missing money is a refund
Refunds generally go back to the original payment method, and processing time depends on that method. A refund marked pending has not cleared; one marked completed has been returned to the original payment method. In Activity, open the refund details and tracker. If you paid with a card or bank account, check that card or bank statement rather than expecting the refund to appear in your PayPal balance. PayPal: Where is my refund?

If you cannot withdraw or transfer the balance
Open the transfer entry and read its exact status or error message before trying another method. A requested transfer marked pending may need more time for internal review. PayPal lists account limitations, a bank or card that is ineligible for instant transfer, and mismatched bank details among possible blockers. Look for a limitation or identity-verification request
Check your Dashboard notifications and the Resolution Center for requests or account restrictions. PayPal says identity confirmation is required to hold a balance. If verification fails, you may still be able to send money or make purchases using a bank account or card, but you cannot use a PayPal balance. A limitation may also block sending or withdrawing; follow the instructions PayPal gives for your account. PayPal: Why do I need to confirm my identity to hold a balance? PayPal says it will email you the reason if it has limited your account. Check the Dashboard or Resolution Center as well, and complete the requested steps there rather than relying on an email link alone.
If the balance appears missing or an activity is unfamiliar
If Activity shows a completed transaction but the expected amount is not visible, confirm its currency in Wallet and check whether the money is associated with another transaction or account notice. If the account display still does not match the transaction record, contact PayPal through its official support channels and provide the transaction details.

For a transaction you do not recognize, report it promptly through PayPal’s in-account reporting flow and secure your account. PayPal’s U.S. Balance terms say unauthorized transfers should be reported at once. Do not share your password, verification codes, or other credentials with anyone claiming they can release funds. The cause, reversibility, and any hold-release date depend on the actual transaction and account. Follow the instructions in Activity, a Dashboard notice, or the Resolution Center; if those do not explain the discrepancy, ask PayPal support to review that specific entry.
