For an India-based business that needs to collect payments from Indian customers, PayKun is the more directly relevant choice of these two: it advertises domestic cards, net banking, UPI and wallets, while PayPal’s India merchant-fees page says India accounts can receive international payments only. If your customers are overseas, either provider may be worth considering, but their fees, payment methods and eligibility are not directly comparable and should be checked against your account and sales mix.
PayKun vs PayPal at a glance

Which service can accept the payments you need?
For payments from customers in India
PayKun’s India gateway page lists domestic cards, net banking, UPI and wallets. PayPal’s India merchant-fees page says India users are supported only for international payments, so it is not the equivalent option for routine domestic online collections. That distinction matters more than comparing the headline percentages if most of your customers are in India.
PayKun also describes QR payment acceptance and payment links, which can suit merchants who collect without sending every customer through a full online checkout. Its page advertises “120+ payment options”; this is PayKun’s own marketing claim, not an independently verified count. See PayKun’s India gateway and pricing page.

For international customers
Both providers describe ways for India businesses to receive payments from overseas customers, but availability depends on account activation, customer location, payment method and transaction eligibility. PayKun says international payments are available after successful verification and activation. PayPal’s India pages describe checkout and other collection workflows; its checkout page claims reach across 200+ markets, but that claim does not guarantee that every feature is available to every India merchant. Confirm supported destinations and methods with the provider before relying on them.
How the fees differ
PayKun’s listed rates
PayKun’s undated India pricing page lists a 1.75% fee for Indian cards, net banking, UPI and wallets, and 3.00% for the international card categories shown there. GST applies to the PayKun fee, so the amount charged to the merchant is not just the stated percentage. The page also states there is no setup or integration fee. Review the provider’s current terms for any other charges relevant to your account.

PayPal’s international transaction and currency costs
PayPal’s India merchant-fees page, last updated March 28, 2024, lists 4.40% plus a fixed fee for international commercial transactions received by India accounts. The fixed amount varies by the currency received; examples on the page include INR 3.00 and USD 0.30. The same page lists a charge of 3.0% above the base exchange rate when converting received balances or payments into another currency, and 4.00% for other conversions in its fee table. It lists standard withdrawal to a linked bank account as free when no currency conversion is involved. PayPal says the original receiving fees are not returned when a payment is refunded. Check the current PayPal India merchant-fees page before signing up, since its published update date is in 2024.
Make a fair cost comparison
Estimate cost using the transactions you actually expect rather than comparing 1.75%, 3.00% and 4.40% in isolation. The relevant inputs include:
Rank #3
- Whether buyers are in India or overseas, and which payment method they use.
- Typical transaction size, because PayPal’s fixed fee varies by received currency.
- Whether customers pay in a currency different from your settlement or withdrawal currency.
- How often you refund payments, given PayPal’s statement that original receiving fees are not returned.
- GST and any other applicable charges under the account terms.
The reviewed PayKun pricing page does not fully specify currency-conversion charges, so its FX cost cannot be compared from that page alone. Ask both providers for the terms that apply to your settlement currency, refund pattern and customer markets.
Payment links, checkout and integrations
PayKun describes gateway integration and payment links alongside its India payment methods. PayPal describes online checkout, invoicing, links, QR codes, recurring payments and integrations. Its checkout page also mentions platform integrations, REST APIs, a JavaScript SDK, and no-code links, buttons or QR codes. These descriptions indicate possible workflows, not a guarantee that every option or payment method is enabled for every India business.

Eligibility and activation
PayKun says eligible non-prohibited businesses, institutes and NGOs with valid Indian details, documents and a bank account can apply. It describes verification before activation, including for international payments. PayPal also describes business onboarding and KYC, but the reviewed pages do not provide a directly comparable full document checklist. Check eligibility and required documents with each provider before committing to an integration.

These are PayKun’s claims; their current regulatory and certification status has not been independently confirmed here. PayPal says it is PCI compliant and describes Seller Protection for eligible purchases, subject to limitations. Neither statement means every transaction is protected against every loss, dispute or fraud claim. Read the providers’ current terms to understand the scope and exclusions.
Quick Recap
How to choose
- Choose PayKun as the more directly relevant candidate if you need to collect from customers in India using domestic cards, UPI, net banking or wallets, subject to eligibility and current terms.
- Consider PayPal for international receipts if its supported methods and customer markets fit your business, and its percentage, fixed fee and currency-conversion costs work for your transaction mix.
- Compare workflows before integrating if you rely on invoices, payment links, QR codes, recurring billing or a particular checkout platform; feature descriptions do not establish universal availability.
- Confirm terms directly for current fees, customer-country coverage, accepted payment methods, GST treatment, FX, refunds, disputes and settlement timing. The pages reviewed do not establish a comparable settlement schedule.
