Paul Brainerd helped bring page layout to personal computers through Aldus and PageMaker, then put much of his next chapter into conservation and environmental education. The connection between those careers was a belief in making specialized work more accessible: first publishing, then opportunities to protect and learn from the natural world.

From journalism and publishing to Aldus

Born in Medford, Oregon, in 1947, Brainerd grew up around visual production: his parents ran a photography studio and camera shop. He studied business at the University of Oregon, worked on the student newspaper, the Oregon Daily Emerald, and earned a journalism master’s degree at the University of Minnesota. He later worked at the Minneapolis Star Tribune and in computerized text processing at Atex.

After Kodak acquired Atex, Brainerd and four engineers set out to develop page-layout software. They founded Aldus in 1984, initially pitching the idea to small publishers before pursuing the emerging desktop-computer market. Brainerd coined the term “desktop publishing,” giving a name to a shift that combined software, computers, printers and publishing workflows.

What PageMaker changed—and what it did not

Aldus PageMaker became one of the defining programs of the personal-computer era by making page layout more accessible outside traditional typesetting and publishing operations. Users could arrange text and images on screen and prepare pages for printing, bringing capabilities that had depended on specialized equipment and production systems to a wider range of organizations and individuals.

That is not the same as saying Brainerd or PageMaker alone invented desktop publishing. The change depended on a broader set of technologies and contributors. Former Aldus colleague Ben Rotholtz, as quoted by GeekWire, called PageMaker “ultimately about the democratization of printing and publishing.”

In a 2006 oral history for the Computer History Museum, Brainerd described the work in his own voice, offering first-person context for how the company and its product developed. Aldus merged with Adobe in 1994; Brainerd left the company after the merger.

His second chapter: conservation and philanthropy

Pacific Northwest conservation

After leaving Aldus, Brainerd turned toward environmental philanthropy and established the Brainerd Foundation, focused on conservation in the Pacific Northwest. GeekWire reported that he spent roughly three months traveling around the region and asking about 100 people whom they would fund if they had the checkbook. The exercise helped inform the foundation’s giving.

Social Venture Partners

In 1997, Brainerd co-founded Social Venture Partners, a philanthropic network that pooled members’ resources and applied a venture-capital-style approach to giving. The model emphasized engaging donors in supporting nonprofit organizations, rather than treating philanthropy only as a transfer of money.

IslandWood and environmental learning

In 2000, Paul and Debbi Brainerd founded IslandWood, an environmental learning center on Bainbridge Island. GeekWire reported that the couple purchased and donated 256 acres for the project and that about 3,000 students a year learned there about watersheds, water quality and forest ecology. Those figures are reported in the 2026 obituary, not independently established current measurements.

Camp Glenorchy

In later years, the Brainerds developed Camp Glenorchy, an eco-friendly retreat near Queenstown, New Zealand, and supported community initiatives in the area. The project extended their environmental interests beyond the Pacific Northwest while connecting them to local community work.

Paul Brainerd’s legacy

Brainerd’s career linked two kinds of institution-building: a software company that helped move page design onto personal computers, and philanthropic projects that backed conservation and environmental learning. Laura Urban Perry, Aldus’s seventh employee and art director at Seattle Weekly, remembered him this way: “Everything he did, he did with integrity.”

Brainerd died at his home on Bainbridge Island on February 15, 2026, aged 78. GeekWire reported that he had lived with Parkinson’s disease for many years. Leonard Garfield, executive director of the Museum of History and Industry, said Brainerd “personified the best of an era when tech innovators not only took smart ideas to scale but shared a broad vision of how to make the world a better place — and got to work to make it happen.”
