PATH’s July 2025 move to a new Seattle headquarters coincided with severe disruption to its U.S. government funding. The global-health nonprofit reported that 23 of its 53 U.S.-funded project awards had been terminated by the end of May, and it expected those awards to provide 18% of its 2025 revenue, down from 36% in 2024. At the same time, PATH reduced its overall office footprint while expanding specialized laboratory space.
These figures describe the situation reported in July 2025; they do not establish PATH’s funding, staffing, or award status in 2026.
What the U.S. funding freeze meant for PATH
PATH is a global-health nonprofit founded in 1977 as the Program for Appropriate Technology in Health. Its work includes developing vaccines, diagnostics, and medical supplies, strengthening health systems, improving product affordability, reducing healthcare-supply waste, and supporting local supply chains. It works with health ministries, philanthropies, companies, and other institutions.
In its July 12, 2025 report, GeekWire described the Trump administration’s foreign-aid freeze, canceled awards to PATH, and delayed payments as pressures on the organization. The report said PATH had awards for 53 U.S.-funded projects at the start of 2025. By the end of May, 28 were active and 23 had been terminated. Those categories total 51; the report did not establish the status of the other two awards, so their status should not be inferred.

PATH expected U.S. government awards to make up 18% of its total revenue in 2025, compared with 36% in 2024. The Gates Foundation remained its largest funder at the time of the report. The figures indicate a substantial change in PATH’s expected funding mix, but they do not show the nonprofit’s later or current financial position. GeekWire’s July 2025 report provides the underlying account.
Staffing consequences
GeekWire reported that PATH had laid off roughly 45% of its global workforce, leaving a headcount of 1,700. These are figures from the July 2025 report, not verified current staffing numbers. PATH president and CEO Nikolaj Gilbert said, “We will go on.” Kammerle Schneider, PATH’s chief of Global Health Programs, described the disruption this way: “The fragility of this sector is something we could not have imagined before January of this year.”

Why PATH’s new Seattle headquarters is notable
PATH moved in March 2025 from Seattle’s South Lake Union neighborhood to former Google offices in Fremont. According to GeekWire, its office footprint fell from 113,000 square feet to 52,000 as hybrid work reduced the need for general office space. Yet PATH expanded specialized lab facilities by 20%.
The new site’s wet-lab area covers 6,000 square feet and can accommodate about 20 scientists. It also includes a Product Development Engineering Lab for medical-device prototyping, testing, redesign, and technology transfer. The contrast is operationally important: PATH trimmed general office space while increasing capacity for specialized product-development work.

What PATH works on
PATH conducts research and testing to develop health technologies and supports health systems in low- and middle-income countries. GeekWire’s examples include a vaccine carrier designed to prevent freezing, contributions to malaria-vaccine development, work with the World Health Organization on a meningitis vaccine, auto-disabling syringes, and microarray patches for delivering vaccines or drugs. These are institutional global-health projects, not consumer products or shopping recommendations.
PATH’s media center describes corporate partnerships as important and identifies relationships with governments, multilateral organizations, and institutional foundations. That points to an organization working through institutional partnerships; it does not establish a consumer referral or affiliate program.

How to interpret the wider mortality projection
A separate study provides context for the potential consequences of aid reductions, but it does not measure PATH’s specific outcomes. The UCLA Fielding School of Public Health reported on July 2, 2025, that researchers analyzed data from 133 countries and modeled effects through 2030. If announced USAID cuts continued, the researchers projected more than 14 million additional deaths by 2030, including more than 4.5 million children under five.
The projection was conditional, not a count of deaths already observed. It covered possible cuts to health services and to areas including nutrition, education, water and sanitation, and humanitarian relief. It should not be presented as a PATH-specific estimate. Davide Rasella, a research professor at the Barcelona Institute for Global Health and the study coordinator, said: “We cannot afford to dismantle funding mechanisms — like USAID — that have already proven to save millions of lives.” Read the UCLA Fielding School’s account of the study for its framing and scope.
