A parlay combines two or more selections into one wager. In an ordinary parlay, every active selection must win (or cover its spread) for the ticket to pay; one losing selection usually makes the whole wager a loss. The possible payout can rise as selections are combined, but so does the number of outcomes that must go your way.
This guide uses U.S. examples. Legal availability and settlement rules vary by state and sportsbook, so check the rules that apply where you are before placing a wager.
What is a parlay bet?
A parlay—also called a multiple or accumulator in some markets—bundles at least two selections into a single wager. Instead of settling each selection as a separate bet, the sportsbook settles the combined ticket according to its parlay rules. Pennsylvania regulations define a parlay as a wager in which all outcomes must win or cover for the patron to win; DraftKings likewise describes a parlay as requiring all selections to win. Pennsylvania’s sports-wagering regulation and DraftKings’ U.S. parlay explanation illustrate those definitions.
For example, a hypothetical three-selection ticket requires all three active selections to win under ordinary parlay rules. If one loses, the ticket generally loses, even if the other two win.

How do parlay odds and payouts work?
For ordinary selections, the sportsbook combines the odds to calculate the ticket’s potential payout. One common method is to multiply the decimal odds for each selection; the final displayed odds and payout depend on the operator’s calculation and presentation. Pinnacle’s explanation of multiple/parlay bets describes multiplying selection odds.
Adding selections can increase the potential payout, but it also adds conditions the ticket must satisfy. A larger advertised return is not evidence that a bet is more likely to win. Check the sportsbook’s displayed odds and payout before confirming a wager, and do not assume that every combination can be priced or accepted.

What happens if a parlay selection pushes or is void?
A push or void does not necessarily make the entire ticket a win or loss. Some operator rules remove the affected selection and recalculate the remaining odds, leaving the other selections in place. The exact treatment can depend on the wager type and the sportsbook’s terms; a selection’s status and the resulting payout should be checked in the operator’s settlement rules. DraftKings, FanDuel’s Washington, DC terms, and Pinnacle describe operator-specific handling of voids or pushes rather than a single universal rule.
FanDuel’s cited terms apply specifically to Washington, DC and are dated July 22, 2026; they are not a statement of every FanDuel rule or of rules elsewhere. Read the Washington, DC terms alongside the rules for the location and sportsbook relevant to you.

Why might a sportsbook reject selections in a parlay?
Selections whose outcomes can affect one another are called correlated. Sportsbooks may restrict correlated selections in an ordinary parlay because the outcomes are not independent. DraftKings says it can limit combinations it considers related. FanDuel’s Washington, DC terms say correlated selections are not permitted unless explicitly offered, such as through a Same Game Parlay, and describe settlement remedies if such selections are accepted in error.
That is operator- and location-specific, not a universal rule for every sportsbook. If a bet slip will not accept a combination, consult the operator’s current rules rather than assuming the selections can be combined by changing the bet type.

What rules should you check before placing one?
There is no single U.S.-wide set of sportsbook rules for every parlay. Pennsylvania, for example, requires operators to submit proposed events and wager types for Board approval and to explain permitted wager types and events to patrons. That state requirement is not a substitute for checking rules in another jurisdiction. Pennsylvania Code § 1401a.6 provides the state-specific example.
- Confirm that sports wagering and the particular event or wager type are permitted where you are.
- Read the sportsbook’s current rules for pushes, voids, and other unsettled selections.
- Check how the operator treats correlated selections, including any same-game option.
- Review the displayed odds, potential payout, and any stated wager or payout limits before submitting the ticket.
- Use the regulator and operator terms that apply to your location; rules for another state or city may differ.
How should you think about parlay risk?
A parlay’s structure can make a large possible payout look appealing, but each added selection creates another condition the ticket must satisfy. North Carolina’s Department of Health and Human Services identifies adding extra “safe” bets to a parlay and live-parlay temptations as potential problematic-betting patterns in its March 11, 2025 guidebook. This is risk education, not a prediction of any individual ticket’s outcome.
