Paris Jackson’s legal dispute over Michael Jackson’s estate concerns oversight of estate administration, including attorney compensation, accounting transparency and access to fee-related records. In a ruling issued by a court-appointed referee in April 2026 and reported in May, $625,000 in 2018 bonus payments to three outside law firms was disallowed and ordered returned to the estate. That specific ruling did not remove the estate’s co-executors or transfer control to Paris Jackson.
What the dispute is about
Paris Jackson is an objector in a Los Angeles probate matter involving the administration of Michael Jackson’s estate. Her counsel’s March 6, 2026, pre-hearing brief challenged bonus payments to outside lawyers and raised objections to fee practices. Those points were arguments submitted by one side, not findings by the court.
The dispute matters to estate oversight because legal fees are paid from estate funds and are subject to court approval. It also involves transparency: in July 2026, a report described a continuing disagreement over whether documents related to fee objections should remain sealed.
What the referee ruled about the bonuses
On April 29, 2026, retired judge Mitchell Beckloff, serving as the court-appointed referee in the fee dispute, issued the ruling reported by ABC News in May. The referee disallowed three bonus payments made in 2018 to outside law firms, totaling $625,000, and ordered the funds returned to the estate.

| Reported payment | Amount |
|---|---|
| Bonus to one outside law firm | $250,000 |
| Bonus to another outside law firm | $250,000 |
| Bonus to a third outside law firm | $125,000 |
| Total ordered returned | $625,000 |
The ruling addressed those bonus payments based on the information presented. It should not be read as a finding that every legal fee paid by the estate was improper, or that the estate as a whole was mismanaged. Nor does an order returning money to the estate mean that the money was awarded to Paris Jackson personally.
What the executors’ side has said
ABC News reported that a representative for the executors said the estate had obtained court approval for other outside-counsel bonuses over the years, and that the executors understood legal fees required court approval. The representative also said outside counsel had agreed to return funds if payments were not approved. This is the executors’ side’s account of its fee practices, not a finding by the referee. ABC’s report did not establish the representative’s name and role.
Who controls the estate
John Branca and John McClain are the estate’s co-executors. Paris Jackson’s objection to fee practices does not, by itself, make her an executor or give her control of estate assets. The 2026 bonus ruling likewise did not announce a change in the executors.
Estate businesses control rights to Michael Jackson’s song recordings and musical compositions. A 2024 California appellate opinion said estate assets remained subject to probate-court supervision. That background helps explain why court review of administration and fees matters, but the appellate opinion did not decide the later dispute over the 2018 bonuses.
What is known about the sealed documents dispute
On July 16, 2026, TMZ reported that the parties were still disputing whether documents related to fee objections should remain sealed. That report is the latest dated development identified here; it does not establish whether the records remain sealed or whether the court has since ruled. The status as of October 8, 2026, is not confirmed by the available reporting.
