Paramount’s five-year South Park renewal is a major reported commitment, but the available figures do not show that it is a $1.5 billion loss—or even that Paramount officially disclosed a $1.5 billion price. The company announced the rights package in July 2025; the dollar figure comes from press reports cited by the Associated Press. What Paramount is buying is clearer than what the deal will earn.
What Paramount agreed to
On July 23, 2025, Paramount Global, Park County, and South Park Digital Studios announced a five-year renewal. Paramount said it covers 50 new episodes and all 26 previous seasons, with the series continuing on Comedy Central and Paramount+ around the world. The announcement also said Paramount+ would become the U.S. streaming home for the series library and new episodes. Paramount Global’s announcement did not state a price.
The library is substantial: Paramount Global Content’s catalog page lists 331 episodes across seasons 1–29, as accessed October 4, 2026. Episode count alone does not establish the value of the rights or how the agreement allocates its cost.
Where the $1.5 billion figure comes from
The $1.5 billion valuation was reported by the Los Angeles Times and other outlets, according to the Associated Press. It is a reported deal value, not a figure Paramount confirmed in its announcement. The AP account attributes the figure to that press coverage.
#1 Best Overall
Dividing the reported total by 50 new episodes yields $30 million per episode arithmetically, but it would be misleading to call that Paramount’s confirmed episode fee. The reported total covers a five-year arrangement that also includes library rights and a broader distribution package. The available sources do not disclose how much is allocated to new production, the library, or other rights.
Why the streaming-rights history matters
The renewal follows a high-profile dispute over where South Park could stream. A 2019 term sheet between South Park Digital Studios and WarnerMedia Direct, Max’s domestic operator, covered a five-year exclusive streaming license. Warner alleged that content owed under that agreement was instead licensed to Paramount+. The appellate record describes separate claims involving Paramount and notes that Paramount was not a party to the term sheet. Those are allegations and procedural details, not proof that the 2025 renewal is unprofitable.

Earlier reported figures provide context but are not like-for-like price comparisons. AP reported Warner paid more than $500 million for rights under its 2019 arrangement, and Paramount announced a separate $900 million deal in 2021 for exclusive new content. The rights, content, term, and scope differ, so those amounts do not establish whether the 2025 package was expensive or a bargain. The appellate order lays out the contractual context.
Where viewers can watch episodes
Availability depends on territory and timing. In its September 2026 announcement, South Park Studios and Paramount said new episodes are on Paramount+ globally, with next-day availability in the United States, Canada, and Australia. Season 29 premiered on Comedy Central on September 16, 2026. Check the service’s current catalog in your country, since streaming windows can change. South Park Studios’ announcements provide the dated season information.

Does the deal create a financial problem for Paramount?
The rights package is concrete; its financial return is not. The announced terms and reported headline value do not disclose payment timing, production costs, subscriber gains attributable to the series, advertising revenue, or what Paramount might otherwise earn by licensing the content. Without those inputs, it is not possible to calculate a profit, loss, or return on investment from the public figures alone.
For a finance-minded assessment, the relevant questions are whether the rights bring in or retain enough subscribers, support advertising and other revenue, and justify the cost over five years. The package’s breadth—50 new episodes plus 26 prior seasons—may matter strategically, but it is not itself evidence of a positive return. Calling the agreement a “problem” is therefore an analytical framing, not a financial conclusion established by the disclosed evidence.
