A Football League World summary attributing its report to The Times’ Martyn Ziegler says Leeds United would receive £40.1 million in the season referenced. That figure is a reported amount, not a verified current league schedule. The available information does not establish the payment amounts or eligibility years for Burnley, Sheffield United or Luton Town, and it does not show that all four clubs receive the same sum.
What the reported update says
The surfaced Football League World summary, titled “Parachute payments update emerges impacting Burnley, Sheffield United, Luton Town and Leeds United,” attributes the reporting to Martyn Ziegler of The Times. It says Leeds, relegated in 2023, would receive £40.1 million for the season discussed. The exact publication date and season label were not verified, and no official current club-by-club schedule was established.
The headline names Burnley, Sheffield United and Luton Town as well as Leeds, but the summary does not provide verified amounts for each club. It is therefore not evidence that the four clubs have equal payments—or that each named club is eligible for a payment in the same season.
What parachute payments are
Parachute payments are a financial mechanism associated with a club’s transition after relegation from the Premier League. The amount and duration depend on the rules that apply and the club’s circumstances. The available historical research does not establish the exact current rules, so it cannot be used to calculate a present-day allocation or determine an individual club’s eligibility.

- An advanced strategy board game for 1 to 4 players.

- A Multi-layered business simulation in the world of sport.
- Acquire and train players, hire doctors, trainers, and other sports professionals then develop your stadium, attract sponsors, and play matches against other teams.
- Several paths to victory.
For a precise comparison, a verified schedule would need to identify each recipient, the season the payment covers, the club’s year since relegation and any other circumstances relevant under the applicable rules. Those details are not established here for Leeds, Burnley, Sheffield United or Luton.
What historical Championship research found
Sheffield Hallam University researchers have examined the relationship between parachute payments and Championship results. Their findings offer context about competitive balance, but they describe historical datasets—not a forecast for the current season—and an association does not prove that payments alone cause promotion.

The 2006/07–2016/17 study
A 2018 study by Wilson, Ramchandani and Plumley examined 11 Championship seasons, from 2006/07 to 2016/17. It found that clubs receiving parachute payments were twice as likely to be promoted as clubs without them in that dataset. That comparison does not show that payments were the sole reason for promotion.
The 2017–2021 update
In a 2022 update covering 2017–2021, Sheffield Hallam researchers reported that recipient clubs were three times as likely to be promoted in their comparison. They also reported an average points gap of 8.6 in favour of clubs receiving payments across the five seasons. The researchers explicitly cautioned that the low number of data points prevented them from testing statistical significance, so these results should be read as a historical pattern rather than a definitive measure of effect.
