Paper Boat grew from a simple idea: make familiar Indian homemade drinks, beginning with Aam Panna, available as convenient packaged beverages. Hector Beverages paired those traditional flavours with childhood-memory storytelling and a distinctive ready-to-drink pouch, turning nostalgia into a clear brand proposition rather than a claim that every customer felt the same way.
How Paper Boat began
Hector Beverages says it was founded in India in 2009 by Neeraj Kakkar, James Nuttall, Suhas Misra and Neeraj Biyani. Its company history traces the Paper Boat idea to a lunch at which one of the founders brought homemade Aam Panna. The founders saw an opportunity to commercialize a drink they enjoyed at home. Hector Beverages’ company history dates Manesar plant operations to 2011 and the Paper Boat launch to 2013.
A 2023 Scroll excerpt from Harsh Pamnani’s book Booming Brands gives the idea a broader category context: the founders looked for Aam Panna in the market and found other traditional homemade drinks difficult to find commercially as well. Scroll frames their response as building around Indian ethnic drinks, rather than simply entering an already familiar beverage category. That is a reported strategic interpretation, not a quantified account of category size or market share.
How nostalgia became a brand proposition
Paper Boat’s positioning made traditional flavours and childhood memories part of the same offer. In a February 17, 2015 interview with FNB News, Hector Beverages founder and CEO Neeraj Kakkar described Paper Boat’s traditional beverages as “a new generation of ethnic flavours that have a strong connect with childhood memories.” The interview headline quoted him saying, “We developed traditional drinks that are disappearing.” These statements explain management’s intent: bring drinks associated with home and the past into a contemporary ready-to-drink format.

A 2023 SAGE case abstract also characterizes the brand proposition as connecting consumers with the past through memory and emotional satisfaction. That framing helps explain the strategy, but it is not evidence that all consumers responded alike. The available sources do not establish current consumer-preference or sales figures.
What the packaging contributed
In 2012, Hector Beverages approached design agency Elephant Design to develop traditional Indian beverages in a convenient ready-to-drink format. The agency says its work covered naming and positioning, package structure, and visual language. Childhood nostalgia and playful graphics were central to that design approach: the pack could carry the brand’s emotional cues while making a drink intended for home preparation portable and store-ready.

A 2017 World Food India government publication describes the pack as a “4-part-laminate doy pack” and says it gave Paper Boat a distinctive identity. That contemporaneous description supports the role of packaging in the brand’s look and format; it does not establish recyclability, environmental performance, shelf life, or technical superiority.
How the portfolio developed
Hector Beverages’ official timeline shows how the company extended beyond its initial drinks over time. The sequence includes both new beverage lines and snacks, rather than a single uninterrupted expansion of Paper Boat’s original range.

The Scroll excerpt from Booming Brands reports that the company’s Bengaluru R&D centre researched 15 products simultaneously and that a product took around two years to move from development to market. It also describes supply, shelf life, machinery requirements and market interest as factors in deciding what to develop.
