But sovereignty cuts both ways: governments may want software for sensitive operations while also resisting dependence on a foreign provider. The UK’s NHS platform makes that tension tangible. It is a significant, contested deployment—not evidence by itself that data were mishandled.
Why did Palantir stock hit a record?
TheStreet reported that Palantir shares rose 5.17% to $209.05 on October 9, reaching a fresh high after Barclays initiated coverage. TheStreet also said Goldman Sachs had upgraded the stock the previous day. Those are explanations for renewed investor attention, not proof that either analyst call caused the entire move. The October 9 price is a dated report, not a live quote.

Fast growth gave the investment story substance
In its August 3, 2026 earnings release, Palantir reported second-quarter revenue of $1.935 billion for the quarter ended June 30, up 93% year over year. U.S. commercial revenue was $764 million, up 149%, and U.S. government revenue was $809 million, up 90%. The company also reported 73 deals valued at $10 million or more. These figures describe company-reported results; they do not establish how quickly the growth will continue.

Palantir raised its full-year revenue guidance to $8.150–$8.158 billion and forecast U.S. commercial revenue above $3.424 billion, representing at least 134% growth. Those are company expectations, not realized revenue. The Associated Press separately reported that shares rose 29.5% after the Q2 results and guidance increase in August. That earlier reaction is distinct from the October 9 record.

Government demand is part of the opportunity
Defense work illustrates why investors may view operational AI as a growth market. Axios reported on September 2 that the Army awarded Palantir and Anduril contracts totaling $192 million for eight Tactical Intelligence Targeting Access Nodes: four advanced and four basic systems expected over the following year and a half. The reported amount covers both companies together; it is not Palantir’s individual contract value. Axios said further orders were expected in fiscal 2027, which remains a reported expectation rather than a guarantee.
What is sovereign AI, and why is it awkward for Palantir?
Sovereign AI is a broad policy goal: a government wants meaningful control over the data, computing, systems and decisions involved in AI used for sensitive public or national purposes. The precise requirements differ by country and use case. A government might seek domestic hosting, limits on foreign access, local legal authority, or the ability to keep critical operations running without depending on an outside supplier.

That goal can create demand for platforms that help organizations use data and AI in operational settings. Palantir CEO Alex Karp has argued that customers trust the company with control over operations, data and decisions. He said, “Their competitive advantage should never become the training data for future models.” That is the company’s position on its value and data practices, not independent proof that it is uniquely able to deliver sovereign AI.

The awkwardness is strategic: adopting a foreign provider may help a government deploy capabilities now, while creating concerns about long-term reliance on that provider. TheStreet describes UK efforts to limit dependence and develop alternatives, but the underlying procurement material was not independently verified here. It also reported that the UK paid £5 million to extend Palantir’s Homes for Ukraine software for a year, bringing payments under that arrangement to £15 million while work on an internal replacement was under way. Those details are TheStreet’s account, not independently confirmed procurement findings.

| Question | Why Palantir could benefit | Why sovereignty can be a risk |
|---|---|---|
| Demand | Governments may seek AI and data systems for sensitive operations. | They may prefer domestic suppliers or fund alternatives to reduce foreign dependence. |
| Data control | Palantir says customers retain operational control and that their data should not become training material for future models. | Public and policy scrutiny can persist even when a supplier and customer describe safeguards; concerns are not themselves proof of a breach. |
| Operational reliance | Software embedded in workflows may become difficult to replace, supporting continued use. | Switching costs can also motivate a government to build an alternative. No quantified switching-cost study is established here. |
| Growth expectations | Reported revenue growth and deal activity support the case that demand is translating into business. | Company guidance and analyst forecasts remain expectations; future growth is not assured. |
Can the UK rely on Palantir for NHS data?
The NHS Federated Data Platform is a consequential public deployment and a source of political dispute. The Guardian reported on September 30, 2026, that more than 44,000 people had filed legal objections concerning personal health data processed through the Palantir-powered platform. The objections invoked data-protection rights. Their number measures formal opposition; it does not establish that the platform violated data-protection law or that a breach occurred.
The Guardian described the agreement as roughly £330 million over seven years and reported that parliamentary committees had called for use of a break clause. These are procurement and political developments, not findings that Palantir violated the contract. NHS England told the Guardian: “All NHS organisations remain in control of their data within the FDP, with suppliers unable to access it for their own purposes, and we will respond to the objection requests in line with data protection law.”

What the contract and performance claims establish
The contract is for the NHS Federated Data Platform, not a blanket transfer of NHS data ownership to the supplier. NHS England’s stated position is that NHS organisations control their data within the platform and suppliers cannot access it for their own purposes. That assurance should be presented alongside the objections and continuing scrutiny, rather than treated as settling every public concern.
The Guardian also reported Palantir’s claim that trusts using the software recorded 117,000 additional operations, alongside improvements in discharge delays and the timeliness of cancer results. Those are company-provided outcome claims and were not independently audited in the reporting summarized here. They are not evidence, on their own, that the platform caused the changes.
Is Palantir stock expensive after its record high?
TheStreet put Palantir’s market capitalization at $502 billion on October 9, 2026, and reported that shares traded at 85 times projected next-year earnings. It also cited a $203 average Wall Street price target, Barclays’ $265 target when it initiated coverage at Overweight, and Goldman Sachs’ $230 target. These are date-specific market estimates and analyst opinions. Price targets are forecasts, not promises or findings of fair value.
A high projected earnings multiple means investors are paying for substantial expected future performance. That leaves less room for disappointment if growth, margins or future demand fall short of expectations. But the figures alone do not determine whether the shares are fairly priced: the multiple depends on estimates, and the evidence here does not establish a valuation conclusion or investment recommendation.
Quick Recap
What to watch next
- Whether reported growth converts into sustained results: compare future realized revenue and segment performance with Palantir’s own guidance, keeping forecasts separate from results.
- How public-sector customers define control: look for concrete terms about data access, hosting, permitted use, oversight and the ability to change suppliers—not just broad claims about sovereignty.
- Whether deployments deepen or alternatives gain traction: contracts, renewals and procurement decisions can show how governments balance operational value against dependence, but an announced alternative is not proof that a migration has occurred.
- How valuation expectations change: earnings estimates and market prices move. The October 9 snapshot should not be treated as a current quote or a lasting measure of the company’s valuation.
