Palabra AI announced an $8.4 million pre-seed round on August 14, 2025, led by Seven Seven Six (776), the venture firm founded by Reddit co-founder Alexis Ohanian. The London-based startup is building real-time speech translation: software that listens to someone speak, translates their words, and delivers the result as speech with as little delay as possible. The investment backs a bid to make that technology useful in meetings, livestreams and events—not just one-to-one conversations.

Who invested in Palabra, and how much did it raise?

TechCrunch reported that Palabra raised $8.4 million in a pre-seed round led by 776. Creator Ventures and angel investors Max Mullen, Instacart co-founder; Anne Lee Skates, a former Andreessen Horowitz partner; Mehdi Ghissassi, formerly DeepMind’s head of product; and Namat Bahram also participated. TechCrunch’s funding report covered the announcement on August 14, 2025.

Palabra CEO Artem Kukharenko later called the round oversubscribed in a LinkedIn post; that description is the founder’s account. The company was founded in 2023 by Kukharenko and Alexander Kabakov. Kukharenko previously worked as a machine-learning engineer at Samsung and said that living and working across countries helped inspire the product. Palabra’s current website lists its address in London.

What Palabra is building

Palabra’s core proposition is speech-to-speech translation. Rather than showing translated text alone, the system aims to produce spoken translation during a live exchange. That distinction matters for a video call or broadcast, where reading captions may not be practical and pauses can disrupt conversation.

The 2025 product snapshot

At the time of the funding announcement, TechCrunch described a Mac and Windows desktop app that worked with Google Meet, Zoom, Discord, Slack and Microsoft Teams. The app was said to support more than 30 languages then, with 30 free minutes per month and a paid plan starting at $25 per month for 60 minutes. These are historical details, not current pricing or language-coverage figures.

For businesses, Palabra offered APIs and SDKs intended to bring translation into video, communications, livestreaming and event products. TechCrunch reported that Agora used the technology for multilingual live streams, and that GIS Group used it alongside human interpreters. Event organizers were also identified as users. These are reported company/customer examples, not independent evaluations of performance.

The current product positioning

Palabra’s current site describes APIs for speech-to-speech, speech-to-text and text-to-speech, alongside products for meetings, in-person events, webinars and livestreams. The company advertises support for more than 60 languages and sub-second latency. In August 2025, Slator reported a founder claim of more than 70 languages; the later figure on Palabra’s site is the current company-stated coverage, and the different claims should not be treated as a verified language-by-language comparison.

The company also promotes voice-style preservation, voice cloning, glossary support, automatic source-language detection and context-aware delivery. Those features may suit products where a consistent speaker experience matters, but they do not establish that translated meaning is accurate, that emotion or sarcasm is preserved, or that voice cloning is available for every language or plan.

Why real-time speech translation is difficult

A live speech system has to make several decisions on a tight clock. It must recognize words from audio that may be accented, noisy, incomplete or interrupted; translate before the speaker has finished; decide whether to revise an early interpretation; and synthesize intelligible speech quickly enough to keep the exchange moving. Speaker changes, overlapping voices, music, code-switching and unstable connections add further complications.

Chaining separate speech-recognition, machine-translation and speech-synthesis services can accumulate delays at each stage. Kukharenko told TechCrunch that this approach produced too much latency for Palabra, while the company’s system reached roughly 800 milliseconds. That is a company-reported figure, not an independently validated benchmark.

What a latency number does—and does not—tell you

“Latency” can mean time to the first translated audio, delay from a particular point in the source speech, or the time until a translation is complete and stable. Those are not interchangeable. An early spoken fragment may arrive quickly but later need correction; a polished translation may take longer. The published 800 ms figure does not specify the language pair, network conditions, measurement start and end points, or how revisions are handled. Palabra’s current “sub-second” statement is also a company claim, not a published independent test.

Palabra has described a streaming or predictive model intended to reduce latency further. Slator and the founder reported goals of more than 100 languages, up to 10,000 simultaneous audio streams and as much as three times lower latency with a new streaming-prediction model. These are stated targets, not demonstrated results established by the available coverage.

What is known about quality, privacy and scale?

Accuracy claims need a defined test

Palabra’s About page states 99% accuracy, but the page does not define the metric, test set, language pairs, audio conditions or evaluation method. “Accuracy” could refer to different measures, and a single percentage without those details cannot tell a buyer how the system will handle names, technical vocabulary, accents or overlapping speech. The reviewed coverage does not establish an independent, reproducible comparison of Palabra’s accuracy or latency with competing products.

Kukharenko has said human interpreters help check quality when Palabra adds languages. That could support language expansion, but the public claims do not explain which languages receive review, whether interpreters review live conversations or model development, how quality is measured after launch, or how this process scales economically.

Noise handling and voice features are not guarantees

The company has described its system as handling interruptions and noisy environments. That does not show how it performs in crowded rooms, with poor microphones, rapid speech, strong accents, background music, code-switching or multiple people speaking at once. A buyer should test the actual speakers, language pairs and equipment expected in use.

Voice cloning and style preservation raise separate questions from translation quality: whether a speaker has consented, how voice data is handled, and whether listeners can distinguish a natural-sounding but incorrect translation. Palabra’s feature descriptions do not answer every implementation or consent question.

Privacy policy claims are not a compliance determination

Palabra’s pricing page says audio and text are not stored or used for training. That is a company policy statement, not a substitute for reviewing contract terms, data-processing agreements, subprocessors, retention exceptions, regional hosting and access controls. Its site displays GDPR and HIPAA badges, but those badges alone do not establish that a particular deployment meets an organization’s legal or regulatory obligations. Buyers handling sensitive material should review the relevant documentation and obtain appropriate legal and security advice.

Event plans Start at $500 monthly for 5 hours
Broadcast plans Start at $300 monthly for 5 hours
Business and high-volume plans Custom pricing

For current details, see Palabra’s pricing page. API charges are usage-based, while meeting, event and broadcast products have capacity plans; a buyer should estimate actual audio duration, output languages, concurrent streams and support needs rather than comparing headline prices alone.

How Palabra fits against alternatives

The most useful comparison is by workflow, not an unsupported claim that one service is faster, cheaper or more accurate. TechCrunch identified Google Meet, EzDubs and Camb.AI as relevant alternatives. Its coverage did not provide a common benchmark or current price comparison.

Option Positioning What to weigh
Palabra APIs and products for meetings, events, webinars and broadcasts, with speech and text services Potential fit when a business needs an integration or a dedicated multilingual event workflow; validate language quality, latency and operational support for the use case.
Google Meet Translation within a major meeting platform May be simpler when the organization already uses Meet and needs an integrated workflow; assess its current language support and plan availability directly.
EzDubs Consumer-oriented call and conversation translation Relevant for individual users seeking a consumer workflow rather than an API integration.
Camb.AI Business-oriented translation for live events and broadcasts Relevant for media and event use cases; compare operational fit and requirements directly.
Human interpreters Live professional interpretation, sometimes combined with AI Remain important when errors could have legal, medical, financial, safety or diplomatic consequences.

These descriptions reflect positioning, not a head-to-head assessment. Native translation within an existing platform may be more convenient for occasional meetings; a dedicated API or event product may be worth investigating when translation must be embedded in a broader service or delivered to a live audience.

Who should investigate Palabra—and what should they test?

Palabra is most relevant to developers adding translation to a communications product, businesses with recurring multilingual meetings, webinar and conference organizers, broadcasters, livestream platforms and language-service providers exploring AI alongside human interpreters. A casual user who only needs occasional meeting translation may prefer a capability already built into their meeting software.

Before committing, run a pilot with representative language pairs, accents, terminology, microphones and network conditions. Measure not only first audio, but how long a translation takes to stabilize, whether corrections are audible, and how the system behaves during interruptions. Ask for evidence behind accuracy claims and for documentation on privacy, voice handling, service levels, regional deployment and fallback support.

  • Confirm the exact language pairs, dialects and features available on the intended plan.
  • Test noisy rooms, overlapping speakers, names and specialist vocabulary—not just clean sample audio.
  • For events, calculate total hours, output languages, simultaneous streams and support requirements.
  • For enterprise deployment, review data terms, security controls and integration requirements before sending sensitive audio.
  • Keep qualified human interpretation available where a mistranslation could cause serious harm.
