In a clarification dated September 17, 2026, the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) said the proposal remained under Federal Cabinet consideration and that no denomination had been approved for replacement or discontinuation. There is no announced release date or exchange deadline.
When will new currency notes come in Pakistan?
There is no confirmed date. The latest status located is the SBP’s September 17, 2026 clarification, reported by Business Recorder: the matter remained under Cabinet deliberation, with no decision to replace or discontinue any denomination. The SBP said any future decision would be announced through official channels, with adequate time to exchange notes if any are discontinued.
That update controls over earlier statements about printing being near. In January 2026, SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad said printing was at an advanced stage but would begin only after Cabinet approval. In May, he said finalized designs had been sent to the Cabinet. Neither step was final approval.
What has been proposed?
A January 2026 Cabinet briefing identified Rs100, Rs500, Rs1,000 and Rs5,000 as denominations planned for new designs. It also described proposed features, including improved security threads and themes reflecting Pakistan’s regional and geographical diversity, historic monuments, women’s participation in national development, and climate change. These were proposal-stage details, not a final approved denomination list or released designs. The News report on the briefing records those plans.

There had been an earlier design competition. In September 2024, the SBP said nine selected entries spanned seven existing denominations. Those submissions were creative concepts, not finished banknote artwork: the SBP said international designers would use them as inspiration in preparing final designs, which would then go to the Federal Government for approval. Associated Press of Pakistan’s report of the SBP announcement also listed prizes of Rs1,000,000, Rs500,000 and Rs300,000 for first, second and third designs. Those competition results do not establish which designs, if any, will appear on issued notes.
What must happen before new notes reach the public?
The reported process has several distinct stages. A design competition can inform artwork, and sending designs to the Cabinet is not the same as Cabinet approval. Printing and circulation come later.

- Government consideration: Final designs were forwarded for Federal Cabinet approval. As of the SBP clarification on September 17, 2026, the proposal was still under consideration.
- Printing: On January 26, 2026, Governor Ahmad said, “The process of printing new-design banknotes is on advanced stage. We will soon start the printing, subject to approval from the Cabinet. We will print two to three currency notes of different denomination simultaneously.” The condition matters: the statement did not announce that printing had begun. Business Recorder reported his comments.
- Issue and transition: Ahmad said new notes would enter circulation after the SBP reached a minimum stock, and existing notes would be replaced in phases. He did not say which denominations would come first or give a circulation date.
The SBP says the current circulating banknote series began in 2005, starting with the Rs20 note and followed by other denominations. It also states that it has the sole right to issue banknotes under the SBP Act. The SBP’s banknote information page provides that background.
Is the Rs10 note being discontinued?
No discontinuation has been approved. In August 2026, Dawn reported that Deputy Governor Dr Inayat Hussain told a Senate Standing Committee on Finance and Revenue that the SBP was considering phasing out the Rs10 banknote because of printing costs. The same report discussed a new Rs5,000 design process. These were reported proposals and process details, not decisions to withdraw notes. Dawn’s committee report said Hussain put the cost of printing a Rs5,000 note at about Rs14 per note; that figure was his reported estimate for that denomination, not a cost for other notes.

The subsequent SBP clarification is explicit: “The matter remains under deliberation, and no decision has been taken regarding the replacement or discontinuation of any denomination.” Business Recorder reported the clarification. A discussion about the Rs10 note should not be treated as an announced withdrawal, and no exchange deadline has been set.

No action is required on the basis of the information currently announced. Existing notes remain in circulation while the proposal is considered. The SBP has said that if it decides to discontinue any denomination, it will make an official announcement and allow adequate time for exchange. Check the SBP’s official communications for any later decision rather than relying on claims that a note is already invalid.
