Following a meeting on austerity measures, the government announced a package intended to address economic pressures arising from conflict in the region. Radio Pakistan reported that most sectors would move to a four-day working week, with banks, industry and agriculture initially excluded. The broadcaster also reported a separate remote-work measure: 50% of staff in public- and private-sector institutions were to work from home, with essential services exempt. - Official iftar parties and dinners were banned, and online or video-link meetings were to be prioritized.
- Public-sector fuel quotas were to be reduced by 50% for two months; ambulances and public-use buses were excepted.
- Schools were to close for two weeks, while higher-education institutions were to move to online classes.
These are announced measures and durations. The report does not establish how much money or fuel they ultimately saved.
How implementation and exceptions were reported
National Assembly Secretariat roster
On March 11, the National Assembly Secretariat said it had implemented a four-day week under federal policy, except on National Assembly session days. Its roster put 20% of staff physically in the office and 80% working virtually on rotation. Remote staff were expected to remain reachable by phone, email, WhatsApp and other channels, and to report to the office within one hour if directed. Later exclusions and vehicle measure
In a March 14 follow-up, Radio Pakistan reported that law-enforcement agencies and the Federal Board of Revenue would keep their previous routines and would not observe the four-day week. The report also said 60% of government vehicles would be grounded for two months, with a third-party audit planned to review that measure and the 50% fuel-allocation reduction.
