That figure is a specific period’s company-wide net result—not the same as cash flow or the losses Boeing recorded for individual aircraft programs. Boeing’s later full-year report put its 2025 net loss at $11.829 billion, while its first-half 2026 report showed a $435 million net loss. Those later figures provide important context: the $5.982 billion figure is no longer Boeing’s latest reported result.
What does Boeing’s “over $5 billion” loss refer to?
It refers to Boeing’s $5.982 billion net loss for the nine months ended September 30, 2025, reported in its Boeing third-quarter 2025 results. Net loss is the company’s bottom-line result for that period, not a tally of cash spent or a single aircraft-program cost.
The time period matters. Boeing’s next full-year report, issued in January 2026, showed a larger net loss for all of 2025. “Recently” in the title therefore points to the nine-month result, not the most current figure available as of the company’s second-quarter 2026 report.
How should you distinguish the loss from cash flow and program charges?
Financial results use several measures that can sound interchangeable but answer different questions. Boeing’s third-quarter 2025 release included both its company-wide net loss and program-specific reach-forward losses in a cash-flow reconciliation.

- Net loss: the company’s bottom-line result for the stated reporting period. Boeing’s nine-month 2025 net loss was $5.982 billion.
- Operating cash flow: cash generated or used by operating activities during a period. It is not the same measure as net income or loss.
- Free cash flow: Boeing’s non-GAAP measure. The company reported negative free cash flow of $1.877 billion for full-year 2025.
- Reach-forward losses: estimates of expected losses on particular programs over the remaining life of those programs. Boeing reported $5.140 billion in 777X and 767 reach-forward losses in its nine-month 2025 cash-flow reconciliation. This is a program-specific figure, not an additional company-wide net loss.
These numbers should not be added together: they cover different measures, and the reach-forward figure relates to named programs rather than to Boeing as a whole.
How did Boeing’s reported results change after the nine-month figure?
Boeing’s subsequent releases show why a period label is essential. The full-year 2025 result covers more months than the nine-month figure; the first-half 2026 result covers a different year and a shorter period than full-year 2025.

| Reporting period | Measure | Reported result | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nine months ended September 30, 2025 | Net loss | $5.982 billion | Boeing, third-quarter 2025 results |
| Full year 2025 | Net loss | $11.829 billion | Boeing, fourth-quarter 2025 results |
| Full year 2025 | Free cash flow, non-GAAP | Negative $1.877 billion | Boeing, fourth-quarter 2025 results |
| First half 2026 | Net loss | $435 million | Boeing, second-quarter 2026 results |
| Second quarter 2026 | Operating cash flow | Positive $1.364 billion | Boeing, second-quarter 2026 results |
Read across the table by measure as well as by date. For example, positive operating cash flow in the second quarter of 2026 does not mean Boeing reported a net profit for the first half: its first-half net result was a $435 million loss.

Boeing’s 2025 full-year release said the company recorded a $9.6 billion gain on the sale associated with closing Digital Aviation Solutions. That gain materially influenced comparisons of annual and quarterly earnings, so the full-year net loss should be read alongside the release’s explanation rather than treated as a simple continuation of the nine-month result.
