Oak Auctions recorded a final price of $75,000, including the buyer’s premium, for an archive of 37 original British patent letters after bidding closed on May 15, 2020. The auction catalog attributed 24 patents to Thomas Edison and four to Joseph Swan; the other 13 were by inventors or associates. This was a completed sale, not a current offer or a verified present-day valuation.
What sold, and for how much?
Oak Auctions’ lot listing records 21 bids and a final price of $75,000, including the buyer’s premium. The distinction matters: the listing does not identify $75,000 as the hammer price before the buyer’s premium. Bidding ended May 15, 2020. New Atlas reported the sale on May 18, 2020.
The figure is a historical result for this particular lot. It is not a current asking price, nor does it establish what the archive would sell for today.
What was in the archive?
Oak Auctions described the lot as 37 original British Patent Letters dating from circa 1878–1884 and concerning incandescent lighting. Its catalog attributed 24 patents to Edison, four to Swan, and the remaining 13 to other inventors or associates. These counts and descriptions are the auction house’s account of the collection.

The catalog singled out British Patent No. 4576, dated November 10, 1879, which it described as covering an improvement in electric lamps and their manufacture. New Atlas likewise characterized the group as original British patent letters connected with Edison and Swan’s lighting work.
What does the provenance claim establish?
Oak Auctions said Harrods of London sold the archive to a client in 1971, and that the collection later resurfaced with a Harrods certificate of authenticity. The catalog also said the documents appeared to be part or all of the original Edison-Swan Company patent archive.

Those are auction-catalog claims, not independent authentication of the papers or proof that every document belonged to the company. The available reporting does not independently establish the collection’s provenance, completeness, or authenticity.

A single sale does not by itself establish a general market value for historic patent documents. Any meaningful comparison with another collection would need to account for its provenance, condition, completeness, evidence of authenticity, and sale terms—including whether a quoted price includes a buyer’s premium. The 2020 result should therefore be read as the recorded outcome for this specific lot, not as an appraisal of similar documents.

For historical context, New Atlas reported that Edison and Swan worked on incandescent lighting and that their companies eventually combined. The auction catalog offers additional narrative about the patents and the companies, but those broader historical details should be distinguished from independently verified provenance of the auctioned papers.
