Their owners formed the Everything Everywhere joint venture, then introduced EE as the unified consumer brand and early 4G proposition. Existing contracts, phone numbers and handsets generally continued during the transition; customers usually needed a compatible device, SIM, account provisioning and tariff to use 4G. The legacy brands were phased out later, and BT completed its acquisition of EE in 2016.
What actually merged?
Orange UK and T-Mobile UK were combined through a joint venture rather than having every customer account, tariff and shop changed overnight. The venture initially operated as Everything Everywhere (company information). Orange and T-Mobile remained visible consumer brands while infrastructure, operations and products were progressively integrated.
EE came later as the unified retail brand, closely associated with the UK’s first 4G service. That brand launch was a separate step from the original corporate combination (EE).
| Milestone | What it meant |

| 2010 | Everything Everywhere joint venture formed. |
| 2012 | EE consumer brand and 4G proposition launched. |
| 2015 | Orange and T-Mobile retail brands phased out in the UK. |
| 2016 | BT completed its acquisition of EE; BT’s company history records the ownership change (BT). |
What happened to existing Orange customers?
- An Orange contract did not normally disappear simply because the parent business changed.
- Your mobile number and handset remained usable under the existing service.
- You were not automatically required to sign a new EE contract.
- Orange-specific allowances, loyalty offers, roaming terms or entertainment benefits depended on their individual terms. A promotional benefit was not necessarily guaranteed for the life of the account.
If Orange offered an EE upgrade, compare the total cost, minimum term, roaming rules and data allowance with your existing agreement. Treat a proposed rebrand, upgrade and compulsory migration as different things.

What happened to existing T-Mobile customers?
- T-Mobile contracts generally continued unless changed under their contractual variation provisions.
- Numbers and handsets were not automatically invalidated.
- Network integration could affect the service behind the account without immediately changing the T-Mobile name on your bill or SIM.
- A later EE tariff did not automatically add its 4G features or allowances to an older T-Mobile plan.
Business, family and pooled-data accounts could have bespoke migration clauses. Account holders should obtain any proposed change in writing before accepting it.
Did customers need a new phone or SIM?
Continuing an existing service
Using shared network infrastructure could occur without replacing every handset or SIM. A customer continuing an eligible Orange or T-Mobile service was not automatically required to buy new equipment.
Moving to EE 4G
4G required all of the following:
- a handset supporting the relevant network bands;
- a SIM and account provisioned for the service;
- an EE plan that included 4G; and
- 4G availability at the location being used.
Therefore, “the networks are combined” did not mean every legacy customer received 4G. A new SIM might be needed for a particular upgrade, but not necessarily for ordinary continuation of an old contract.

Would coverage and speed improve?
Combining radio sites and capacity could improve practical coverage or reduce congestion in some places. The result depended on the rollout stage, location, frequency bands, handset support and network configuration. Shared infrastructure did not guarantee identical indoor signal in every postcode.
Check the distinction between:
- signal: whether a usable connection is available;
- speed: how quickly data transfers;
- capacity: how the network performs when many people are connected;
- technology: whether the device supports 3G or 4G; and
- population coverage: a national or regional statistic that is not a promise of indoor reception at your address.
Ofcom publishes UK communications and coverage information, but an operator map and a postcode check remain more useful for a particular home, workplace or travel route (Ofcom).
What was EE for?
EE gave the combined business one retail identity and a platform for higher-value products, especially 4G. It simplified the proposition for new customers while allowing the legacy brands to continue during the transition. EE was not a mechanism for placing every existing account on one tariff or technology.

Did the change make bills cheaper?
Existing contracts
Your current price remained governed by the contract and any permitted price-variation terms. A corporate merger did not itself create a right to a lower bill.
New EE offers
EE set prices and allowances for its own plans. A new-customer or upgrade price could be different from a legacy Orange or T-Mobile price and could include promotional conditions, a handset, or a minimum term.

Retiring legacy tariffs
As the old brands were withdrawn, some plans became unavailable for new sales or renewal. That did not necessarily cancel an in-term agreement, but it could limit future upgrade choices.

What about Orange Wednesday and other perks?
Benefits such as Orange Wednesday needed to be checked against the dated terms of the particular tariff. Before changing plan, ask whether the benefit is contractually guaranteed, grandfathered, replaced, limited or withdrawn. Do not assume an EE plan carries every Orange or T-Mobile perk, and do not assume a legacy benefit lasts after an upgrade.
What changed in shops and customer service?
Integration could change shop signage, billing systems, upgrade processes and which staff could resolve an account originally sold by the other brand. A shared retail footprint did not necessarily mean the back-office systems were already unified. During a migration, keep confirmation of any agreed tariff, price, allowance or benefit and use the formal complaints route if billing or service records are wrong.

A large mobile combination raises questions about competition, spectrum holdings, wholesale access, network investment and consumer choice. Regulatory approval addresses those market issues; it does not mean every customer experiences an immediate operational change. Historical decisions and merger material are available from the European Commission (competition policy) and the UK Competition and Markets Authority (CMA cases).

What eventually happened?
Orange and T-Mobile were progressively retired as UK consumer brands rather than disappearing on the day EE launched. EE became the principal consumer identity and was later owned by BT after the 2016 transaction. BT’s annual reports provide the historical record of the acquisition and subsequent ownership (BT annual reports).
Customer checklist before accepting a migration or upgrade
- Check whether your current minimum term has ended and read the permitted-change wording.
- Compare the full cost, not just an introductory price, including any handset payments and annual increases.
- Confirm handset bands, SIM requirements and whether 4G is included in the proposed plan.
- Check coverage at home, work and regular travel locations.
- Ask specifically whether roaming, loyalty, entertainment or family-account benefits will be lost.
- Get any promised price, allowance or migration date in writing.
- Do not cancel the old service until the replacement is active and working.
The Bottom Line
The Orange–T-Mobile combination was a staged transition: Everything Everywhere first, EE later, and BT ownership after that. Existing customers generally kept their contracts, numbers and phones until they chose or were lawfully required to change; 4G and new EE features required compatible equipment and a suitable plan.
