Oracle’s business is booming in its latest reported quarter, led by a surge in cloud infrastructure revenue. For the quarter ended August 31, 2026, revenue rose 30% year over year to $19.3 billion. But the growth was uneven, and Oracle spent heavily to expand capacity: free cash flow was negative $5.4 billion after $28.5 billion in capital expenditures. The results show a fast-growing cloud business, not a simple verdict on whether Oracle shares are a good buy.

What Oracle reported in Q1 FY2027

Oracle’s fiscal year ends May 31, so its first quarter of fiscal 2027 ran through August 31, 2026. The company announced the results on September 10, 2026. Revenue streams grew at very different rates:

Revenue stream Q1 FY2027 revenue Year-over-year change
Total revenue $19.3 billion Up 30%
Cloud revenue $11.6 billion Up 62%
Cloud Infrastructure (IaaS) $7.4 billion Up 121%
Cloud Applications (SaaS) $4.2 billion Up 10%
Software $5.55 billion Down 3%
Hardware Not stated in the Q1 FY2027 release Up 15%
Services Not stated in the Q1 FY2027 release Up 5%

Cloud infrastructure is the clearest engine of the quarter. IaaS revenue more than doubled, while the slower 10% increase in cloud applications and 3% decline in software show that not every part of Oracle’s business is expanding at the same pace. Hardware and services grew, but Oracle’s release figures cited here do not provide their revenue totals.

Oracle CEO Safra Catz said in the company’s release that “Customer demand for AI Cloud Training and Inferencing Services continues to grow faster than supply.” That is management’s characterization of demand and capacity, rather than an independent measure of either.

How to read Oracle’s $664 billion RPO

Oracle reported $664 billion in Remaining Performance Obligations (RPO), an increase of $209 billion year over year. RPO represents contracted future performance obligations; it is not revenue already earned or cash already collected. Oracle also said it booked more than $30 billion of additional AI cloud contracts during the quarter.

The RPO figure signals a substantial pool of contracted work ahead, but it does not establish when each obligation will become revenue, how much will be recognized in any particular period, or the margin Oracle will earn. It should be considered alongside revenue actually reported, rather than treated as a substitute for it.

Why revenue growth did not mean positive free cash flow

Oracle generated $23.1 billion in operating cash flow in Q1 FY2027, but capital expenditures of $28.5 billion left free cash flow negative $5.4 billion. The gap reflects the cash cost of the company’s investment in infrastructure during the quarter. Strong operating cash generation and negative free cash flow can coexist when capital spending is exceptionally large.

The prior fiscal year offers context for the scale of that investment. Oracle reported FY2026 revenue of $67.4 billion, up 17%, and negative free cash flow of $23.7 billion for the year. These figures show that rapid growth has been accompanied by substantial infrastructure spending, though a single quarter or year does not by itself determine the future return on that investment.

What the results say—and do not say—about Oracle stock

The business results support calling Oracle’s cloud operation fast-growing, especially its infrastructure segment. They do not settle whether the stock is attractive at its current price or whether an investor should buy or sell. That judgment would also require a view of valuation, future cash generation, the returns on infrastructure investment, and the risks an investor can tolerate.

Oracle’s FY2027 revenue and earnings-per-share statements are company guidance, not reported results. Keep those forward-looking expectations separate from the Q1 figures above when assessing whether the business is meeting its targets.

Debt and customer concentration can also matter to investors, but the cited company release alone is not enough to draw a complete conclusion on either. Oracle reported $117.7 billion in noncurrent notes payable and borrowings and $7.6 billion current. Those balance-sheet amounts do not by themselves establish the company’s debt risk. A claim that Oracle has an approximately $300 billion OpenAI contract is reported by The Motley Fool article, but Oracle’s cited earnings release does not name that customer or break down RPO by customer; the figure is not independently confirmed by that release.
