Oracle broke ground on a planned data center in West Jordan, Utah, on October 24, 2008. Contemporary reports called it the Utah Compute Center; Data Center Knowledge also referred to it as Project Sequoia. The project was distinct from the separate Utah Data Center associated with the U.S. intelligence community.
What Oracle announced in 2008
Data Center Knowledge reported that Oracle planned to invest $285 million in a 179,000-square-foot facility. Those were reported project estimates, not independently verified final cost or completed-building figures. Data Center Knowledge’s October 24, 2008 report described the groundbreaking and the project’s planned scale.
KSL reported that the facility was expected to be completed in 2010 and employ about 100 people. These were forecasts made at the time, not confirmed outcomes. KSL’s same-day coverage also reported remarks by Oracle President Safra Catz suggesting the company might later add space and employees.
What was reported about the design
Data Center Knowledge described air-side economizers and hot-aisle containment in the planned design. It also reported that Utah’s dry air could allow outside-air cooling in certain conditions. These are design claims from 2008; they do not establish the facility’s eventual configuration, present-day cooling system, or energy performance.

Construction paused and resumed
KSL’s 2010 follow-up reported that Oracle stopped construction in March 2009 and later resumed it. The follow-up documents that interruption and resumption, but the sources available here do not establish the facility’s final opening date, final cost, actual staffing, or current operating status.
What later city records establish
West Jordan’s FY 2026 budget lists a redevelopment area called “EDA #3: Oracle Data Center” at 6200 West 10100 South. It records a historic capped incentive whose final payment was made in 2019. The budget entry provides economic-development context; it is not confirmation that the site is operating today. West Jordan’s FY 2026 budget book contains the city’s entry.
Rank #2
What can—and cannot—be concluded
The record supports a clear account of the original plan, its reported design features, and a construction pause followed by a restart. It does not answer whether staffing grew beyond the initial estimate or verify the final cost, opening date, performance, or current status. No Oracle primary announcement or authoritative documentation of the finished facility’s outcome is established by the sources cited here, so projected figures should not be treated as actual results.
