OpenBB can replace parts of a Bloomberg-style research workflow, but it is not a free, open-source copy of Bloomberg Terminal. The original OpenBB Terminal was sunset in March 2024. Today, OpenBB pairs an open-source data platform with a commercial research workspace; users typically connect their own data providers, and those data services may cost extra.
What Bloomberg Terminal includes—and what OpenBB is challenging
“Bloomberg Terminal” describes more than a dashboard. Bloomberg bundles market and reference data, news, analytics, charting, portfolio and risk workflows, Excel and programmatic access, customer support, and Instant Bloomberg communications. Its official product overview presents a multi-asset service with monitoring, alerts, charting, news, mobile access, and messaging.

OpenBB can help users assemble research tools around selected data sources, expose that data to code and interfaces, and build customized workflows. It does not reproduce Bloomberg’s proprietary data network, messaging system, or institution-wide operating conventions. OpenBB’s CEO has acknowledged that it is not a drop-in replacement and that Bloomberg has much greater data scale, according to TechCrunch’s October 2024 report.
How OpenBB evolved from a free terminal
In 2021, Didier Lopes launched Gamestonk Terminal, a Python-based investment-research tool that emerged during the meme-stock period. The project became OpenBB in 2022 and was known for a command-line interface that brought together sources covering areas such as equities, crypto, foreign exchange, macroeconomics, options, filings, earnings, and sentiment. OpenBB later raised an $8.5 million seed round led by OSS Capital, with angel investors including Ram Shriram, TechCrunch reported.

OpenBB introduced its AI-oriented Workspace in October 2024, shifting its emphasis from a single terminal application toward infrastructure and a configurable interface. The company’s Workspace announcement describes that direction.
What OpenBB offers now
As of August 18, 2026, OpenBB’s product line is best understood as an open data layer plus commercial workspace options. OpenBB’s pricing page distinguishes the open-source Open Data Platform (ODP) from its proprietary core Workspace. Plan names, features, and prices below reflect what the company listed on that date and can change.

OpenBB says Workspace is designed to connect an organization’s own data rather than supply a comprehensive Bloomberg-like feed out of the box. The company lists dashboards and apps, AI agents and Copilot, an MCP server, role-based access controls, multi-factor authentication, identity-provider integration, audit trails, and deployment options. Excel, external-facing apps, training, onboarding, and developer support are among the features associated with higher tiers on its pricing page. These are vendor-listed capabilities, not independent evidence that a particular deployment meets a buyer’s compliance requirements.

OpenBB announced on March 14, 2024, that it was sunsetting the original Terminal. The company said the project averaged roughly 7,000–10,000 monthly active users, but maintaining a free application with more than 500 Python package dependencies created a substantial burden. Data providers changed endpoints, integrations needed continual repairs, and failures in data ingestion could disrupt users’ workflows. The company’s account is in its sunset announcement.

The decision exposes a central challenge for any low-cost financial-data tool: a working interface is only part of the product. A platform that depends on numerous external sources must contend with changing APIs, authentication rules, quotas, schemas, and provider terms. OpenBB’s move toward a shared data layer serving multiple interfaces is an effort to avoid maintaining only one large, tightly coupled terminal.
How to try the open-source data platform
OpenBB’s GitHub repository provides these installation commands and a basic Python example. They set up software; they do not by themselves grant access to every data provider or subscription feed.

The commands and example appear in the OpenBB repository. The repository identifies the platform as AGPLv3-licensed and warns that financial data may be inaccurate and that users are responsible for understanding trading risks.
Open source does not mean the whole product—or its data—is free
ODP is open source, but OpenBB says its core Workspace is proprietary. The company has also open-sourced integration components, apps, widgets, and agent examples, so it is more accurate to describe OpenBB as a product with open and commercial parts than to call the entire current offering open source.

The main platform repository uses the AGPLv3. OpenBB’s licensing announcement explains the change and notes that hosted or distributed modifications may raise obligations under the license; OpenBB also offers commercial licensing. A firm modifying or hosting the software should have counsel assess its specific use rather than assume that “open source” removes licensing obligations.
Nor does open-source software make financial data free. The platform can connect providers and present data through a common interface, but providers set their own fees, licensing limits, redistribution rights, coverage, and service terms. Real-time exchange data, intraday history, corporate actions, fixed-income data, estimates, news, and alternative data can involve separate products or permissions. A free API may be delayed, quota-limited, incomplete, or restricted to certain uses.
“Real-time” also needs a provider-specific definition: it might mean exchange-reported real-time, vendor-streamed, near-real-time, delayed, end-of-day, or cached data. OpenBB alone does not establish which of these applies. Before using a feed for consequential decisions, check the provider, asset class, geography, timestamp, licensing tier, and limitations.

Where OpenBB may be a better fit
OpenBB’s strongest case is for people who want to build a research environment around their own data and tools rather than adopt a fixed terminal. It may be particularly useful when Python, APIs, custom integrations, and agent workflows matter more than turnkey breadth.

- Individual investors and students: a low-cost way to experiment with research workflows, if coding or configuration is acceptable and the available data is sufficient.
- Developers and quants: a shared access layer for data used by analysts, applications, and AI agents, with the option to inspect or extend open-source components.
- Small teams: a configurable workspace for proprietary datasets and collaboration, provided the team can evaluate data licensing and maintain its integrations.
- Institutions with deployment constraints: OpenBB lists VPC and on-premises options for paid tiers, which may merit evaluation when data control and customization are priorities. These deployment choices do not by themselves guarantee security or regulatory compliance.
Where Bloomberg retains an advantage
Bloomberg is structurally better suited to buyers who need a broad, professionally licensed data environment and established institutional workflows. Depending on the user’s requirements and contract, the relevant differences may include global coverage, fixed-income and derivatives depth, estimates and reference data, news, intraday reliability, operational support, and a common platform already used by colleagues and counterparties. Instant Bloomberg communications and the network around them are particularly difficult to reproduce with a customizable interface.
OpenBB can support selected parts of research, analytics, charting, and programmatic access. It does not establish parity with Bloomberg on data coverage, quality controls, service commitments, or communications. Bloomberg’s official product page is sales-led; a current public price was not established here, so buyers should request a quote for their region, seats, and needs rather than rely on a generic estimate.
Costs and risks to assess before choosing
The software price is only one part of the total cost. Teams may also need paid data subscriptions, cloud or Snowflake usage, integration work, monitoring, and staff time to repair connectors or validate results. In a do-it-yourself setup, those responsibilities sit with the user or organization; a Workspace contract should be assessed for exactly what OpenBB will operate and support.

- Data quality: verify ticker mapping, corporate actions, point-in-time history, survivorship bias, timestamps, and missing values for each source and use case.
- Provider reliability: test how workflows behave when a source changes its API, reaches a quota, alters authentication, or withdraws a permission.
- Licensing: confirm rights to store, display, export, and redistribute each feed; AGPL obligations and data-provider terms are separate questions.
- Enterprise controls: ask for security documentation, identity-provider compatibility, audit details, data-residency information, support response commitments, and disaster-recovery terms.
- AI outputs: require source links, timestamps, reproducible queries, and human review. Natural-language access and generated charts or insights are not a substitute for verified analysis or investment advice.
Who should consider OpenBB instead of a terminal subscription?
Individuals and students
Consider the Community tier or ODP if the goal is learning, prototyping, or research with public or lower-cost sources. It is a poor fit if you expect a ready-made professional data subscription, guaranteed real-time coverage across asset classes, or a no-configuration experience.

Quant and engineering teams
Evaluate ODP when you need a reusable integration layer, custom datasets, or common access for Python and AI workflows. Before production use, check provider licensing, normalization, rate limits, point-in-time accuracy, dependency stability, and who will maintain the connections.
Investment firms and larger organizations
Assess deployment and security requirements alongside the data itself: identity controls, audit logs, residency, support, recovery, Excel and API access, and contractual responsibilities. Treat listed controls as a starting point for due diligence, not proof of regulatory suitability.
Bottom line on OpenBB as a Bloomberg challenger
OpenBB is a credible challenge to parts of Bloomberg’s workflow and economics, especially for users who value open infrastructure, customization, and research built around their own data. It is not a free Bloomberg Terminal, and its value depends heavily on the feeds, licenses, integrations, and operating capacity a user brings. The best comparison is not “same terminal for less,” but whether a flexible research platform is a better fit than a bundled institutional data and communications network.
