Yes—Reddit and OpenAI announced a partnership on May 16, 2024. The agreement gives OpenAI access to Reddit’s Data API and provides for Reddit content to appear in ChatGPT and other OpenAI products. But the often-repeated claim that “OpenAI will train ChatGPT on every Reddit post” goes beyond what the companies publicly disclosed.
The announcements do not identify the specific posts, models, training runs, data fields, or technical systems involved. The deal is best understood as a commercial data-access and product partnership that may support model training, retrieval, search, evaluation, or other AI features.

What Reddit and OpenAI agreed to
Under the partnership, OpenAI receives access to Reddit’s Data API, which Reddit described as providing “real-time, structured, and unique content.” Reddit said its content would be brought to ChatGPT and other OpenAI products. The companies also said they would work together on AI-powered features for Reddit users and moderators.

The companies did not publish the deal’s value, duration, data volume, model names, precise API permissions, or technical architecture. The public announcement also does not establish that OpenAI received unlimited access to all Reddit data.

Training is not the same as live Reddit search
“Training ChatGPT” is a useful shorthand, but it can describe several different technical activities:
- Model training: Reddit text could be used to improve future models or model behavior. This generally does not mean that a searchable copy of every post is stored inside the model.
- Retrieval: An AI system could obtain fresher Reddit information through an API when answering a question.
- Content display: ChatGPT could show or link to Reddit material without that material changing the model’s learned parameters.
- Evaluation or fine-tuning: Reddit data could be used to test systems or adjust them for particular tasks.
- Reddit product features: The companies could build moderation, discovery, summarization, or search tools inside Reddit, which is separate from training ChatGPT.
The announcement does not say which of these uses are included, or whether all of them are. It also does not prove that a particular user’s post was included in a training dataset or that ChatGPT can reproduce it.
What the Data API does—and what remains unknown
Reddit’s Data API is an authorized channel for accessing Reddit data. API access is governed by Reddit’s Data API Terms, developer terms, the User Agreement, documentation, and related policies.
However, the public API terms do not necessarily reveal every provision in a confidential enterprise agreement. The partnership announcement does not identify:
- Which subreddits or categories of content are covered;
- How far back the historical data extends;
- Which metadata fields OpenAI can receive;
- How deleted content is handled;
- Applicable rate limits or retention periods; or
- Whether private messages, restricted communities, or moderator information are included.
Public posts, private messages, and restricted content should not be treated as interchangeable. The announcement confirms access to Reddit’s Data API, not access to every record held by Reddit.

Did Reddit sell users’ posts?
In ordinary language, Reddit entered a commercial content-licensing partnership with OpenAI. Saying that Reddit “sold all user data” is broader than the public evidence supports. The announcements do not establish that all posts, private messages, account records, or personal data were transferred.
Reddit’s current Privacy Policy says public content may be available to AI systems and may appear in AI-chatbot responses, including ChatGPT. Public visibility, however, is not the same as each user individually negotiating or expressly approving the OpenAI agreement.
The legal question is what rights Reddit received under its User Agreement and what additional obligations apply under copyright, privacy, consumer-protection, and data-protection law.
What Reddit’s current terms say
Reddit’s current U.S. User Agreement, effective July 1, 2026 and last revised May 26, 2026, gives Reddit a broad license to make user content available for syndication, distribution, publication, or use by partners. The agreement specifically gives AI and machine-learning training as an example of licensed use.
The agreement also says Reddit may remove metadata associated with content and addresses certain moral-rights and attribution claims. Its terms are not universal: Reddit publishes separate terms for users in the European Economic Area, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, and some other jurisdictions.

Those contractual provisions matter, but they do not automatically settle every legal dispute. Users may still own copyright in original material under the law that applies to them. A license from a user to Reddit does not necessarily answer whether every AI use is lawful, whether attribution is required, or whether a particular privacy or data-protection right applies.
Rank #3
A user’s agreement with Reddit is also not necessarily identical to OpenAI’s rights and responsibilities under the companies’ commercial contract.
Can Reddit users opt out?
The current Reddit materials reviewed do not establish a general account-level control that prevents all licensing or use of public posts for AI training. Reddit’s privacy materials describe controls for matters such as personalized advertising and data requests, but those controls should not be presented as a universal AI-training opt-out.
Practical steps include:
- Do not publish sensitive information. Avoid posting health, financial, employment, relationship, location, or identifying details that you would not want copied or summarized elsewhere.
- Review current policies and settings. Check Reddit’s privacy policy, User Agreement, and account settings because labels and available controls can change.
- Delete posts or comments you no longer want public. This can remove material from Reddit’s live service, but it is not a guarantee that every copy, cache, quotation, archive, or model effect disappears.
- Use Reddit’s official privacy mechanisms. Where applicable, submit data-access or deletion requests through Reddit’s published procedures.
- Remember that pseudonymity is limited protection. Multiple posts can sometimes be linked through writing style, timing, location, or details disclosed across an account.
Reddit’s Developer Data Protection Addendum describes deletion and secure-erasure obligations for Reddit personal data obtained through developer services. The public materials do not establish how every provision applies to OpenAI’s confidential commercial arrangement or to derivatives of already-trained models.
What happens when a post is deleted?
Deletion can mean several different things:
- The post disappears from Reddit’s live service.
- It may stop appearing in a subsequent API response.
- A partner may be required to delete a stored copy under applicable terms.
- Search engines, caches, archives, screenshots, or quoted copies may continue to exist.
- Information already reflected in a trained model may not be removable simply by deleting the original post.
Reddit’s developer materials contemplate deletion requests and deletion endpoints for data obtained through developer services. They do not explain a general process for “untraining” a model that has already learned statistical patterns from text. Therefore, deleting a post should be viewed as reducing future availability—not as a guaranteed reversal of every downstream use.
Privacy risks for Reddit users
A public post can still be sensitive. A pseudonymous account may contain enough information to identify its author, especially when posts are combined. Potential risks include:
- Re-identification of supposedly anonymous users;
- Exposure of health, financial, relationship, employment, or location information;
- AI summaries that remove context or nuance;
- Inaccurate or defamatory reproduction of user claims;
- Profiling, targeting, or surveillance; and
- Loss of practical control once data is copied into downstream systems.
These are risks associated with large-scale reuse of public discussions. They are not proof that OpenAI improperly used a particular sensitive post.

Copyright, consent, and compensation
Reddit’s terms give Reddit broad rights over submitted content, but that does not necessarily mean every post is owned by Reddit. Depending on the material and jurisdiction, a user may retain copyright in an original post while granting Reddit permission to distribute or license it.

The OpenAI partnership may provide contractual authorization between the companies without creating an individual approval or payment mechanism for every contributor. The public announcements do not promise that Reddit users will be compensated, credited, or given a post-by-post veto.
The deal also does not definitively resolve whether a particular AI use is licensed, fair use, infringement, or subject to another legal theory. Attribution, takedown procedures, creator complaints, and compensation arrangements were not detailed in the public announcement.
What the FTC inquiry means
In March 2024, Reddit disclosed that Federal Trade Commission staff were conducting a nonpublic inquiry into Reddit’s sale, licensing, or sharing of user-generated content with third parties to train AI models. The inquiry attracted attention because it concerned the broader practice of AI-data licensing, including how user expectations and privacy obligations might apply.
An inquiry is not a finding of wrongdoing. The sources reviewed here do not establish a final public enforcement action arising from that inquiry. It is more accurate to say that Reddit’s AI-licensing practices drew regulatory scrutiny than to say the FTC determined that the OpenAI deal violated the law. Why Reddit pursued AI licensing
Reddit has a large archive of human-written discussions, including niche questions, informal language, product experiences, and community debates. That material can be useful to AI companies seeking timely, conversational data.
Best Value
For Reddit, licensing creates a revenue stream beyond advertising and gives the platform more control than unrestricted scraping. The partnership could also support moderation, search, summarization, and discovery tools, while bringing more visibility to Reddit communities through ChatGPT.
Reuters reported that investors viewed AI-data licensing as an important potential revenue source for Reddit, and that Reddit shares rose after the OpenAI announcement. That market reaction is historical context; it does not reveal the value or current financial performance of the OpenAI agreement.
Do not confuse the deal with Reddit’s Google agreement
Reddit announced a separate agreement with Google in February 2024 involving Reddit content for AI-model training and related services. News reports placed that arrangement at approximately $60 million per year.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThat reported figure belongs to the Google agreement, not the OpenAI partnership. OpenAI and Reddit did not disclose a comparable price in their public announcements. See the AP report on the Google deal.

| Confirmed by the public record | Not established by the announcement |
|---|---|
| OpenAI receives access to Reddit’s Data API. | That every Reddit post was supplied to OpenAI. |
| Reddit content was intended for ChatGPT and other OpenAI products. | That a particular user’s post trained a particular model. |
| The companies discussed AI-powered features for Reddit users and moderators. | Which models, datasets, training runs, or retrieval systems are involved. |
| Reddit’s current terms expressly allow certain partner and AI-training uses. | That private messages or restricted content are included. |
| Reddit’s AI-licensing practices drew FTC scrutiny. | That the FTC found a legal violation. |
Bottom line for Reddit users
OpenAI and Reddit did make a real partnership agreement. It gives OpenAI authorized access to Reddit data and contemplates bringing Reddit content into ChatGPT and other products. But the public record does not show that every post trained ChatGPT, identify which models used Reddit content, or prove that ChatGPT can retrieve or reproduce any specific user’s post.
For users, the practical lesson is straightforward: treat public Reddit posts as content that may be copied, licensed, indexed, summarized, and reused beyond Reddit. Review the current rules, remove sensitive material when appropriate, and use Reddit’s privacy-request channels—but do not assume deletion guarantees removal from every downstream copy or already-trained model.
