OpenAI’s reported move into personal investing was not a conventional purchase of a brokerage. Secondary reports described an acqui-hire of Roi founder and CEO Sujith Vishwajith. The more consequential development for consumers came later: by June 25, 2026, eligible U.S. ChatGPT Plus and Pro users could connect financial accounts and ask questions about spending, savings, debt, and investments. ChatGPT can help explain and organize financial information, but it cannot trade or manage accounts.
What did OpenAI buy?
Secondary reports described OpenAI’s move as an acqui-hire of Sujith Vishwajith, founder and CEO of Roi, an AI-powered personal-finance and investing app. That is narrower than saying OpenAI bought a brokerage or took over a functioning investment platform. The reports do not establish that Roi’s software, brand, users, infrastructure, or assets transferred to OpenAI, and the deal terms were not disclosed. OpenAI did not publish a transaction announcement in the cited materials. Secondary coverage of the reported transaction and a separate summary characterize it as an acquisition involving Roi’s founder.
What Roi did
Roi aimed to bring financial information from multiple asset types into one place and use AI to explain or surface insights about it. Its reported coverage extended beyond stocks to cryptocurrency, decentralized finance, real estate, and NFTs. That made it an account-and-portfolio context product, not necessarily a brokerage that executed trades.
What happened to Roi
Secondary summaries said Roi would shut down its consumer service and that user data would be deleted after the shutdown. Those details are reported rather than confirmed here by an OpenAI announcement; the cited summaries do not establish a complete transfer or deletion history for every data category. What ChatGPT Personal Finance offers now
OpenAI announced a U.S. preview for Pro users on May 15, 2026, then updated its announcement on June 25 to say the experience was available to Plus and Pro users in the United States on web, iOS, and Android. OpenAI describes a connected-finances experience with dashboards and conversational help. Availability can roll out gradually, so an eligible user may not see it immediately. OpenAI’s product announcement has the rollout details.
Users can connect selected financial accounts through Plaid. OpenAI says the integration supports more than 12,000 financial institutions. The help documentation describes assistance with:
- Reviewing spending by category, spotting recurring subscriptions and bills, and comparing spending trends.
- Checking upcoming payments, tracking net worth, and planning budgets or savings goals.
- Reviewing portfolio allocation and understanding daily changes in stock and ETF holdings.
- Thinking through debt-payoff choices and major purchases.
- Organizing tax-related information and questions, or exploring investment risks and trade-offs.
For example, a user could ask where spending rose, how a connected portfolio is allocated, or what information to gather before asking a tax professional about a stock sale. These are analysis and planning prompts, not instructions for ChatGPT to take financial action. The available functions are described in OpenAI’s Finances help documentation.

What ChatGPT cannot do
Important limits
- It cannot make trades, move money, or pay bills.
- It cannot change account settings or retirement contributions, or open or close accounts.
- It cannot file taxes.
- OpenAI says ChatGPT is not a fiduciary, registered investment adviser, broker-dealer, tax preparer, or law firm.
Investment analysis is not investment management. A portfolio explanation or scenario comparison does not mean ChatGPT can execute a recommendation, assume responsibility for it, or provide the protections associated with a regulated financial professional. OpenAI’s stated boundaries are in its Finances help documentation.
How account connections and data work
Users choose which accounts to connect and what information to share. OpenAI says connected information may include balances, transactions, investments, and liabilities; ChatGPT cannot see full account numbers or make changes to the connected accounts. Temporary Chats do not access connected financial accounts. If a user removes a connection, OpenAI says synced account data is deleted from its systems within 30 days, while Plaid handles associated connection data under its own policies. OpenAI’s announcement and help page describe these controls.
Account aggregation is not a guarantee that every financial detail is present or current. An institution may be unsupported or a connection may fail; holdings, cost basis, transactions, or liabilities can be incomplete or delayed. A dashboard should not be treated as a real-time brokerage ledger. Connect only accounts whose information is useful for the task, and verify consequential figures against the institution’s own records.

Why OpenAI is moving toward personal finance
The strategic shift is from a general-purpose chatbot toward an assistant that can reason with more context about a user’s life. Financial context—goals, debts, a mortgage, planned purchases, and account activity—can make answers more tailored and encourage people to return to the product for recurring decisions. It also positions ChatGPT between consumers and the financial providers that already hold accounts or offer services.
That position need not depend on stock-picking. A conversational front door could help people understand their finances, then potentially connect them with tax, credit, financial-management, or expert services. OpenAI’s current product adds the context layer; it does not itself provide the account execution layer.

Financial help is not the same as regulated advice
General education and planning support differ from a personalized recommendation to buy, sell, or hold a security. The stakes rise when a system considers a person’s holdings, income, risk tolerance, goals, and timing—especially if that person treats a fluent answer as a directive. A disclaimer does not prevent users from relying on an answer as though it were advice.

For important decisions, check primary documents and seek an appropriately qualified professional. Verify fund holdings and fees in official materials, tax treatment with a tax professional, and account-specific rules with the institution or plan administrator. Do not infer from OpenAI’s product description alone that a particular regulatory classification applies.

AI-generated financial explanations can be wrong even when they sound confident. Possible failure modes include invented or stale facts about a company, confusion between similarly named tickers or funds, misreading an incomplete portfolio, and tax explanations that overlook jurisdiction-specific rules. An answer may also miss fees, taxes, liquidity, concentration, or employer-plan restrictions if the relevant information is not connected or supplied.
- Check tickers and holdings against the account statement or official fund and company documents.
- Confirm prices, dates, fees, and tax details using current primary sources before acting.
- Give the tool enough context to make a comparison meaningful, but do not assume it has all relevant facts.
- Use it to generate questions or a checklist rather than treating an answer as a buy-or-sell command.
OpenAI says more than 50 finance professionals evaluated the experience and reports scores of 79/100 for GPT-5.5 Thinking and 82.5/100 for GPT-5.5 Pro. Those are company-reported internal evaluation results, not independent evidence of investment returns, accuracy in every user’s circumstances, or suitability for a particular investor. OpenAI’s announcement provides the figures.

Partnerships could make ChatGPT a financial-services doorway
OpenAI has also announced a multi-year partnership with Intuit. The announcement describes potential ChatGPT experiences involving credit-product discovery, tax estimates, connections to tax experts, cash-flow forecasting, tax preparation, and payroll management. It signals a possible model in which ChatGPT serves as an interface to established providers rather than building every financial function itself. OpenAI’s Intuit announcement describes the relationship.
That model raises consumer questions that matter as much as the interface: how product suggestions are ranked, whether commercial relationships affect answers, how conflicts are disclosed, and who is accountable when a user follows a recommendation or completes an action through a partner. Users should be able to tell whether they are interacting with OpenAI, an account-aggregation provider, a tax or credit company, a broker, or a human professional.
Quick Recap
Who should use it—and when to choose another option
Potentially useful for organization and explanation
- Someone who wants a plain-English explanation of connected spending or portfolio allocation.
- A household comparing a budget, savings goal, debt payoff, or major-purchase scenario.
- An investor preparing a checklist of questions for a professional rather than asking for a trade command.
Choose a more suitable source for action or accountability
- For current quotes, account-level positions, and trade execution, use a brokerage’s tools and verify its account records.
- For fiduciary or suitability-based planning, especially involving retirement, estate planning, taxes, or a major life decision, consult a qualified human professional.
- For complex tax filings or transactions, use a tax professional; for fund fees, holdings, or company financials, consult official filings and documents.
- If connecting financial accounts is not worth the privacy trade-off, use the institution’s own tools or a budgeting approach that does not require this connection.
