Sam Altman and Jony Ive confirmed in November 2025 that a working OpenAI hardware prototype existed, and Ive said it could become available in “less than two years.” That does not mean the design was finalized or that a finished product is about to ship. Court-related reporting said the design was still unfinished, and the latest reports point to customer availability in 2027. The first device is widely reported to be a screen-free AI speaker or home companion, but OpenAI has not confirmed its name, price, specifications or release date.
What Altman and Ive actually confirmed
In a public conversation with Laurene Powell Jobs on November 24, 2025, Altman and Ive discussed a prototype and the goal of making a device that felt calmer and less intrusive than a smartphone. Ive said it could be available in less than two years. Altman described the ambition as a new kind of computer, not simply another phone accessory. Axios reported Ive’s timeline, while TechCrunch summarized the executives’ comments.
They did not announce a final product name, commercial design, retail price or complete list of features. The phrase “less than two years” was a forward-looking estimate made in November 2025, not a guarantee of a 2026 launch.
Does a prototype mean the design is finalized?
No. A prototype demonstrates or tests an idea; it does not establish that a product is ready for mass production. Product development can move through several distinct stages:

Public comments establish that a prototype existed, but not its technical maturity. A court filing reported by TechCrunch said the design was not finalized. Later reporting described a program that had not reached retail readiness; MacRumors, citing court-related reporting, said the device would not ship before late February 2027. A working prototype and a finished consumer product are therefore very different milestones.
What the first device is reported to be
Recent reporting points to a portable, screen-free smart speaker or AI home companion rather than a phone, earbud or conventional wearable. The Los Angeles Times and MacRumors describe a speaker-like device intended to provide conversational assistance in the home. This remains anonymous-source reporting, not an official OpenAI product specification.
Reports have floated details such as a camera, contextual awareness and a form that could be moved or held. They are not confirmed features. Claims about a doughnut shape, hockey-puck size or moving parts are especially speculative and should not be treated as settled design details.

The available evidence does not identify the first product as a phone, glasses or earbuds. Altman previously said the project was not a smartphone, and the 2025 court filing described the prototype as neither an in-ear device nor a wearable. Other form factors may have been considered for a broader hardware roadmap; that is not proof they are the first commercial product. Axios covered Altman’s earlier comments, and The Information reported on the hardware team.

| Date | What was said or reported | Status |
|---|---|---|
| 2023 | Altman and Ive began collaborating on an AI hardware concept. | OpenAI’s account of the collaboration: OpenAI announcement. |
| May 21, 2025 | OpenAI announced its acquisition of io Products and said Ive and LoveFrom would take on major design responsibilities. | Confirmed by OpenAI; the reported deal value was approximately $6.4–$6.5 billion, according to The Associated Press. |
| June 2025 | Court documents said the device design was not finalized and it was at least a year from being advertised or sold. | Reported by TechCrunch. |
| November 24, 2025 | Altman and Ive discussed an existing prototype; Ive said availability could be in less than two years. | Public comments reported by Axios. |
| January 2026 | OpenAI executive Chris Lehane said the company was on track to unveil its first device in the second half of 2026. | A reported company target, not a firm retail-launch commitment: Axios. |
| February 2026 | Reporting based on court-related information put customer shipping no earlier than February 2027. | Not an official launch date: MacRumors. |
| July–August 2026 | Reports continued to describe a screen-free speaker or home companion and point to a 2027 release. | Anonymous-source reporting from the Los Angeles Times and The Information. |
As of the latest reporting in August 2026, 2027 is the more defensible expectation for customer availability. February 2027 is the earliest reported shipping point, not a date OpenAI has publicly promised. A second-half-2026 unveiling target and a 2027 retail timeline can coexist: announcing a device is not the same as shipping it.
What it might do—and what remains rumor
Reports describe ambitions that could include answering questions with OpenAI models, playing media, responding to messages, controlling smart-home devices and personalizing assistance using context. A camera or other sensors could help the device interpret its surroundings. These are reported possibilities, not a confirmed feature list. Forbes and MacRumors have described some of these reported ambitions.

There is no public confirmation that it will perform facial recognition, buy products, access email, monitor people continuously or nudge users based on behavior. Those are consequential capabilities, not details to infer from the broad idea of a context-aware assistant.
Price, subscription and purchase status
OpenAI has not announced a price or subscription requirement, and the device is not available for preorder in the cited material. Anonymous-source estimates differ: The Information reported a possible $200–$300 range, while later rumor circulation cited $300–$400. These are unconfirmed estimates that may reflect different designs or changing cost assumptions; neither is an official price.

Privacy and everyday usefulness are central questions
A screen-free assistant that is useful because it understands its surroundings would need to make sensing legible and controllable. OpenAI has not publicly disclosed device-specific privacy controls or data policies. Before buying a camera-and-microphone companion, consumers will need clear answers on:
- Whether microphones listen locally, transmit audio to the cloud, or both—and how recording is indicated.
- Whether a camera can be physically disabled, whether visual data is retained, and whether facial recognition is optional.
- How the device handles visitors, household members and children who did not set it up.
- Whether messages, email or other personal information are indexed, and how users can export or delete data.
- Whether interactions may be used to train models, and what happens after an account change or service outage.
- What confirmations and safeguards apply before sensitive actions, such as controlling locks or making purchases.
Practical performance matters just as much. A separate device needs to respond quickly and reliably, work with the services people already use and offer enough hands-free convenience to justify its cost. A screenless interface may reduce distraction, but it can make navigation, accessibility, confirmation and error correction harder. Users should also consider connectivity and battery needs if the device is meant to move around the home.
Why OpenAI wants its own hardware
OpenAI and Ive have framed the project as an opportunity to rethink computing around AI rather than simply add AI to existing app-and-screen interfaces. In its collaboration announcement, OpenAI said the work had moved from exploratory ideas toward tangible designs and described current computer interfaces as shaped by traditional products. OpenAI’s announcement also outlines Ive and LoveFrom’s design role.

A dedicated device could give OpenAI more control over how people access its services, reduce dependence on phone operating systems and use sensors to provide context that a software assistant on a phone may not have continuously. The trade-off is that a cloud-dependent product must earn trust and deliver a meaningful improvement over tools consumers already own.
What to compare while waiting
There is no OpenAI hardware product to buy yet. For someone deciding what to use now, the relevant comparison is whether an existing device meets the need without adding another uncertain platform:
- Amazon Echo offers an established smart-speaker and smart-home ecosystem; it is not a dedicated OpenAI device.
- Apple HomePod suits Apple-centered households seeking music and HomeKit integration, rather than direct ChatGPT hardware integration.
- Google Nest connects with Google services and smart-home devices for households invested in that ecosystem.
- ChatGPT voice mode on a phone provides conversational AI without the cost or uncertainty of unannounced hardware, though it is less ambient than a dedicated room device.
The useful test is not which product has the most impressive chatbot demonstration. It is whether a dedicated device provides enough convenience, context, privacy, reliability and interoperability to justify another microphone—and possibly camera—in the home.
What would make the story more definite
The key uncertainties would be resolved by an official product announcement giving the final design, product name, price, release date and launch regions, alongside confirmed specifications and privacy controls. A clear statement about subscription requirements, connectivity, accessibility, repairability and supported services would let consumers compare the total cost and practical value with existing speakers and phone-based assistants. Until then, the speaker form factor and 2027 timing are reporting, not a purchase commitment.
