Short answer: OpenAI launched ChatGPT Go at $8 per month in the U.S. on January 16, 2026, as a lower-cost alternative to ChatGPT Plus. But Go is not an ad-free upgrade: ads may appear on both the Free and Go plans. The U.S. advertising test began on February 9, 2026, and OpenAI expanded it to additional markets by August 11.
Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Edu accounts are currently excluded from ChatGPT ads. A free no-ads option is also available in some regions, but it comes with tighter limits and fewer tools.

What ChatGPT Go is—and what it is not
ChatGPT Go is a consumer subscription tier, not a new model or separate app. OpenAI positioned it between the free plan and ChatGPT Plus for users who regularly hit Free limits but do not want to pay Plus pricing.

At launch, OpenAI said Go offered approximately 10 times more messages, file uploads, and image creation than Free, along with longer memory and context. Those figures describe OpenAI’s launch comparison, not a permanent guaranteed number of daily prompts. Actual limits can change with demand, model choice, safeguards, and product updates.
#1 Best Overall
The U.S. launch price was $8 per month. Pricing is localized in some markets, so the U.S. figure is not a universal global price.
ChatGPT Free vs. Go vs. Plus vs. Pro
| Plan | Launch-era U.S. price | Typical fit | Ads |
|---|---|---|---|
| Free | $0 | Infrequent use and basic access | May include ads |
| Go | $8/month | More messages, uploads, images, voice, and memory at the lowest paid price | May include ads |
| Plus | $20/month | Advanced reasoning and more demanding individual workflows | Ad-free |
| Pro | $200/month | Heavy individual use and the highest individual access | Ad-free |
These prices come from OpenAI’s January announcement and should not be treated as a guarantee of current checkout pricing. Check the current pricing page for the price and feature matrix in your country.

What Go adds over Free
- Approximately 10 times more messages, uploads, and image creation at launch.
- More generous access to supported models and tools.
- Longer memory and context.
- More practical capacity for voice, files, images, and recurring casual use.
What Go does not provide
Go was not intended to replace Plus for advanced users. OpenAI described Plus as offering higher limits, more advanced reasoning models, legacy-model selection, Codex access, and better support for longer, more continuous workflows. Model names and feature availability have changed since January, so current details should be checked on the live pricing page.
Ads have already started—not merely “coming next”
OpenAI initially said it planned to test advertising with logged-in adults in the United States on Free and Go. That test began on February 9, 2026. OpenAI later expanded testing to Canada, Australia, and New Zealand, and said on August 11 that ads had launched in the United Kingdom, Mexico, Brazil, Japan, and South Korea.

That makes “ads are coming” accurate only as a description of the January announcement. As of August 16, 2026, ads were already being tested in the U.S. and additional markets. Eligibility still varies by country, account, age status, and rollout stage.
Where ChatGPT ads appear
According to OpenAI’s advertising FAQ, ads can appear below the end of a ChatGPT response. They are visually separated from the answer and labeled as sponsored. OpenAI says there may be one or more ad units when there is a relevant match, but it has not promised a universal number of ads per day.
Ads may not appear in every eligible conversation. Relevance, advertiser availability, geography, user controls, and sensitive-topic rules can affect delivery. OpenAI says ads are not eligible near health, mental-health, or political topics, and they do not appear in Temporary Chats. Accounts identified as belonging to users under 18 do not receive ads.

OpenAI says no. Its stated policy is that ads run on systems separate from the chat model, advertisers cannot rank or alter ChatGPT’s answers, and paid placement is not an endorsement by OpenAI. Those are OpenAI’s stated principles, not an independently demonstrated guarantee about every possible long-term effect of commercial incentives.
For users, the practical distinction is important: a sponsored result should be treated as advertising, not as part of the model’s organic answer. OpenAI says the ad and the answer are separated and clearly labeled.
Privacy: what advertisers can—and cannot—see
| OpenAI says | What that means in practice |
|---|---|
| Advertisers do not receive users’ chats, chat history, memories, names, email addresses, precise locations, IP addresses, or sensitive information. | Advertisers do not receive a copy of your conversation merely because an ad was shown. |
| The current conversation can inform ad selection. | OpenAI’s advertising system may use the topic or intent of the current chat to choose a relevant ad. |
| With personalization enabled, selected signals from past chats, memories, and ad interactions may be used. | Your conversations are not shared directly with advertisers, but they may still play a role inside OpenAI’s ad-selection system. |
| Messages sent directly to an advertiser through an ad can be seen by that advertiser. | An ad interaction is a separate commercial conversation. Do not assume messages sent to the business remain private from that business. |
If ad personalization is disabled, ads can still be based on the current chat thread. OpenAI says personalization is not initially available in the European Economic Area or Switzerland. Its FAQ also says data used for ads can be deleted, with retention for up to 30 days before removal.

How to avoid or reduce ChatGPT ads
- Upgrade to Plus or Pro. OpenAI currently describes both as ad-free consumer plans. Business, Enterprise, and Edu are also excluded from ChatGPT ads.
- Use the free no-ads option if it is offered in your region. This option may impose fewer daily messages and remove tools such as image generation.
- Turn off personalization. Open Settings → Ad Controls and disable ad personalization. This limits the signals used to tailor ads; it does not necessarily remove ads.
- Use Temporary Chat when appropriate. OpenAI says Temporary Chats do not show ads.
- Dismiss or report individual ads. The ad controls also allow users to see why an ad was shown and submit feedback.
Availability and settings can vary by region, account type, and rollout phase.

OpenAI frames advertising as a way to support broader access to ChatGPT while operating an expensive AI service. The company is creating another revenue stream from users who remain on Free or choose the lower-cost Go tier instead of upgrading to Plus or Pro.
The business trade-off is straightforward: advertising can help subsidize access, but conversational products create a higher trust burden than ordinary websites. Even if advertisers cannot directly edit answers and do not receive chat transcripts, users may reasonably want to know when their conversation context or memories are being used to select commercial content.
OpenAI is also developing an advertiser product. Businesses can follow updates at ads.openai.com. The available materials describe an evolving program rather than a fully documented advertising marketplace with guaranteed reach or fixed inventory.
Quick Recap
What remains uncertain
- How frequently individual users will see ads.
- Whether future ads will become more interactive.
- Whether Go’s price or feature mix will change.
- How broadly the no-ads Free option will remain available.
- Whether personalization will expand to additional regions.
- Whether OpenAI will eventually include other plans or products in advertising tests.
Which ChatGPT plan should you choose?
- Choose Free if you use ChatGPT occasionally and can tolerate limits and possible ads.
- Choose Go if you frequently hit Free limits and mainly want more messages, uploads, images, voice, or memory at the lowest paid price. Do not choose it specifically to avoid ads.
- Choose Plus if you need stronger reasoning, more advanced workflows, and an ad-free consumer plan. It is generally the clearest upgrade for researchers, writers, analysts, and frequent users.
- Choose Pro only if your individual usage is unusually heavy enough to justify the much higher price.
- Choose the no-ads Free option where available if avoiding advertising matters more than message volume and advanced tools.
