OpenAI announced ChatGPT Edu for universities and a separate nonprofit discount program on May 30, 2024. They are different purchasing paths: Edu is an institution-procured university workspace with no standard public price in the launch announcement, while approved nonprofits can buy ChatGPT Business at listed discounted rates or contact sales about Enterprise. As of August 2026, OpenAI lists nonprofit Business at $8 per user per month with annual billing or $10 monthly; Enterprise discounts can reach 75%, subject to approval and sales terms.
What OpenAI announced on May 30, 2024
OpenAI made two related but distinct announcements. ChatGPT Edu was presented as an affordable version of ChatGPT for higher-education institutions. OpenAI for Nonprofits introduced discounted access to ChatGPT Business and ChatGPT Enterprise for eligible nonprofit organizations.
OpenAI’s original nonprofit announcement offered 20% off ChatGPT Business and 50% off ChatGPT Enterprise for larger nonprofits. Those are the original May 2024 terms, not the complete current offer: OpenAI’s Help Center now describes nonprofit discounts of up to 75% on Business or Enterprise, subject to approval and product eligibility.
What ChatGPT Edu is—and who can buy it
ChatGPT Edu was designed for broad deployment by universities, including to students, faculty, researchers, and campus operations teams. It is an institutional product, not an individual subscription that someone can obtain simply by using a university email address. Access depends on the institution’s purchase and its administrators’ workspace arrangements.

At launch, OpenAI described Edu as including GPT-4o, text and vision reasoning, advanced data analysis, custom GPTs, administrative controls, and enterprise-level security and privacy features. GPT-4o is the launch-era model description; models, limits, and feature names can change, so it should not be read as a statement of the current model lineup.
OpenAI called Edu affordable but did not publish a standard per-seat price in its announcement. Universities should approach it as a sales-led institutional purchase and request written pricing and contract details rather than infer a rate from Business or Enterprise nonprofit prices.

Nonprofit pricing and eligibility as of August 2026
OpenAI’s Help Center lists ChatGPT Business for approved nonprofits at $8 per user per month with annual billing, or $10 per user per month with monthly billing. These prices are listed as of August 2026 and depend on nonprofit approval; they are not a guarantee of eligibility or permanent rates. Larger nonprofits can contact sales about Enterprise, for which OpenAI advertises discounts of up to 75%. “Up to” is a maximum, not a promised rate for every organization.
| Offer | Who it is for | Price or discount listed | How to proceed |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Edu | Universities and higher-education institutions | No standard public price identified in the launch announcement | Contact OpenAI sales for institution-specific terms |
| ChatGPT Business for nonprofits | Approved nonprofit teams | $8 per user per month billed annually, or $10 per user per month billed monthly, as listed in August 2026 | Apply for nonprofit validation, then purchase or apply the discount to an existing workspace |
| ChatGPT Enterprise for nonprofits | Larger nonprofits | Up to 75% off; no standard public price stated | Contact sales; discount and terms are subject to approval |
| API usage | Organizations building with the API | No nonprofit discount currently offered under the nonprofit program | Evaluate API pricing separately |
OpenAI uses Goodstack to validate nonprofit eligibility. To apply for Business pricing, use the nonprofit application linked from the OpenAI for Nonprofits Help Center and use the email associated with an existing Business workspace, or the email intended for a new one. Existing subscribers approved for the discount may have it applied prorated to the current billing cycle and future billing. New customers apply first, then create or purchase the workspace after approval; the discount should appear at checkout. Check the workspace billing page to confirm how it was applied.

For Enterprise, contact sales and ask about eligibility, discount level, deployment size, security requirements, contractual terms, and whether a Business Associate Agreement (BAA) is available. OpenAI says ChatGPT Business does not offer a BAA; organizations that require one should discuss Enterprise with sales.
How to choose between Edu, Business, and Enterprise
| Product | Best fit | Pricing visibility | Key distinction |
|---|---|---|---|
| ChatGPT Edu | University-wide or otherwise institutionally managed higher-education deployment | Institution-specific; contact sales | Education-focused institutional workspace |
| ChatGPT Business | Small and medium-sized teams, including approved nonprofits | Public nonprofit rates listed above | Team workspace and centralized administration; no BAA |
| ChatGPT Enterprise | Large organizations needing large-scale deployment or additional enterprise arrangements | Contact sales | Sales-led terms; nonprofit discount may be up to 75% |
A nonprofit university should not assume that nonprofit status automatically transfers Business or Enterprise nonprofit rates to Edu. The current nonprofit documentation describes discounts for Business and Enterprise, not a separate Edu discount. Ask OpenAI sales whether the institution qualifies for education-specific or nonprofit-specific terms.

What university buyers should settle before signing
Request a proposal that makes the total cost and operating model clear. OpenAI’s announcement does not establish public Edu seat prices, minimums, or contract terms, so confirm them directly.
- Scope and seats: Define whether the deployment covers a pilot, one department, faculty and staff, students, or the wider campus; ask about seat categories and minimum commitments.
- Identity and administration: Confirm single sign-on, domain controls, provisioning and deprovisioning, user governance, and who can create or share custom GPTs or enable tools.
- Data and privacy: Review training and data-retention terms, administrator access, and the treatment of student records or other regulated information. Product security statements are not a blanket guarantee of FERPA, HIPAA, GDPR, or other legal compliance.
- Features and usage: Ask which models, tools, usage limits, and data-analysis capabilities are included, and whether API access or credits require a separate arrangement.
- Contract and support: Clarify support levels, service commitments, renewal and price-escalation provisions, overages, data export, and what happens when a student or employee leaves.
- Governance: Establish rules for academic integrity, disclosure, assessment design, accessibility, and acceptable use before accounts are broadly distributed.
What nonprofit buyers should check
Business may offer a straightforward starting point for an approved team, while a larger or more complex deployment may warrant Enterprise discussions. Compare the discount with the requirements of the actual workspace and contract.
Best Value
- Confirm that the legal entity purchasing the service is the one validated and that approval covers the intended workspace.
- Estimate how many people need paid seats and whether contractors, volunteers, or partner organizations can be included under the proposed arrangement.
- Decide whether the need is ChatGPT workspace access or API development; the nonprofit program currently does not discount API usage.
- Determine whether a BAA or other contractual commitment is required. Business does not offer a BAA.
- Review data-handling rules and any usage-based features or services that may add cost beyond per-user seats.
ChatGPT for Teachers is a separate education offer
ChatGPT for Teachers is not the university product announced in 2024. OpenAI’s Help Center describes it as free through June 2027 for verified U.S. K–12 educators and staff employed by accredited schools or districts. Students are not currently eligible, and workspaces are limited to verified educators within the same district. Eligible users can begin verification at chatgpt.com/k12-verification. For further eligibility details, see OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teachers Help Center article.
Quick Recap
What not to assume
- The original 2024 nonprofit discounts—20% off Business and 50% off Enterprise—are historical launch terms; current listed nonprofit terms are different.
- “Up to 75%” does not mean every nonprofit receives a 75% Enterprise discount.
- A university’s nonprofit status does not establish that it can buy Edu at the Business nonprofit rate, and a university email alone does not grant Edu access.
- The nonprofit offer does not currently include API discounts, and ChatGPT Business does not include a BAA.
- OpenAI’s security and privacy descriptions do not by themselves prove that a particular deployment meets an institution’s legal, regulatory, or records-management obligations.
