OpenAI’s reported $500 billion valuation in October 2025 came from a private sale of existing employee shares—not from a public stock-market listing or a $6.6 billion investment paid to OpenAI. Current and former employees reportedly sold about $6.6 billion in shares to outside investors at a price implying that valuation. The deal details were attributed to unnamed sources by Reuters and the Associated Press, rather than disclosed in a public company filing.
What happened in the OpenAI share sale?
On October 2, 2025, Reuters and the Associated Press reported that current and former OpenAI employees had sold roughly $6.6 billion worth of shares. The transaction price implied a $500 billion valuation for the privately held company. Reuters described this as an increase from a previously cited $300 billion valuation. Reuters and the Associated Press both attributed the deal details to sources familiar with the transaction who were not authorized to speak publicly.
Reuters named Thrive Capital, SoftBank, Dragoneer Investment Group, Abu Dhabi’s MGX, and T. Rowe Price among the buyers. It also reported that OpenAI had authorized more than $10 billion in secondary stock sales. That authorization was a ceiling, not the amount reported as sold: the completed sales cited by Reuters and AP were about $6.6 billion.
Was the $6.6 billion an investment in OpenAI?
No. It was a secondary share sale: existing shareholders—here, current and former employees—sold shares to investors. The money from those shares goes to the selling shareholders, rather than directly to OpenAI as new capital. That differs from a primary funding round, in which investors buy newly issued shares and provide funds to the company.

Reuters separately noted SoftBank’s participation in an earlier $40 billion primary funding round. That financing is a different transaction from the employee liquidity event and should not be added to the $6.6 billion sale. The cited reports do not establish the full terms, per-share price, or how much any individual participant bought or sold.
What does a $500 billion implied valuation mean?
The figure is an estimate of the company’s value implied by the price paid for shares in this private transaction. It is not a public-market capitalization: OpenAI was privately held, and its shares were not trading on a public exchange at a universally available price. A transaction involving some shares does not mean every share could be bought or sold at that valuation.

For a personal-finance reader, the key distinction is liquidity. The reported transaction let some employees convert private-company shares into cash by selling to outside investors. It does not show that ordinary retail investors had access to the same shares or could participate on the same terms.
How the $500 billion figure fits with other reported numbers
OpenAI-related figures reported at different times measure different things. They should not be treated as a single, continuously updated share price or as interchangeable proof of profitability.

The later 2026 revenue estimate and funding discussions postdate the 2025 employee sale and describe different measures and transaction statuses. They do not retroactively change what the 2025 share sale implied.

The Associated Press reported in October 2025 that OpenAI was not yet profitable, and framed the high valuation as reflecting investor expectations for AI as well as questions about whether AI products would meet those expectations. That was AP’s contemporaneous assessment, not a guarantee of future returns.
