OpenAI launched Shopping Research in ChatGPT on November 24, 2025. It is an interactive product-discovery workflow for purchases involving several requirements, comparisons, budgets, and trade-offs. ChatGPT asks follow-up questions, researches products and retailers, incorporates your corrections, and produces a personalized buyer’s guide.
It can reduce comparison work, but it is not a guaranteed price-comparison engine. Prices, stock, shipping, reviews, and product details can be incomplete or stale, so verify the merchant’s terms before paying.

What Shopping Research is
Shopping Research is more than a product carousel or a shopping-focused prompt. You describe what you need, ChatGPT clarifies important constraints, searches relevant product information, shows candidates during the process, and then assembles a buyer’s guide with recommendations, trade-offs, comparisons, and merchant links.
OpenAI says the experience is designed for categories such as electronics, beauty, home and garden, kitchen and appliances, and sports and outdoor equipment. Its launch description says the system uses a version of GPT-5 mini trained for shopping tasks, with evaluations focused on constrained product-discovery requests. That is an account of OpenAI’s internal development and testing, not independent proof that every recommendation is accurate.

OpenAI’s March 24, 2026 shopping update added richer product results, conversational refinement, image similarity, side-by-side comparisons, and improved product-data freshness and coverage through the Agentic Commerce Protocol. Those changes expand ChatGPT’s broader shopping experience; they should not be confused with a new Shopping Research launch.
How to start Shopping Research
OpenAI’s current Help Center documentation describes two entry paths:
- Ask a shopping question. ChatGPT may suggest Shopping Research when the request is complex enough.
- Use products already shown in a chat: select one or more, then choose Research to compare them or find alternatives.
The original launch post also described a Shopping Research choice in the + menu. Interface labels and rollout details can change, so look for the current Research or shopping-research control on your logged-in account rather than relying on one fixed menu path.

At launch, OpenAI said the feature was rolling out on the web, iOS, and Android for logged-in Free, Go, Plus, and Pro users. The launch-season statement that usage would be nearly unlimited applied to the 2025 holiday period and is not a permanent usage guarantee.
How to write a request that produces a useful shortlist
Give ChatGPT the information a human shopping adviser would need:
- Product category and intended user
- Total budget, including whether tax and shipping count
- Must-have specifications and deal-breakers
- Preferred or excluded brands
- Size, color, compatibility, location, or delivery deadline
- Your priority: price, performance, durability, comfort, style, warranty, or availability
A practical format is:
Find a quiet cordless stick vacuum for a small apartment under $350. Prioritize low noise, easy storage, replaceable batteries, and a strong warranty. Exclude Shark and Dyson, and separate the best value from the best overall option.

You can use the same structure for a laptop, stroller, appliance, gift, or a comparison of products you have already shortlisted. Explicit constraints give the system something concrete to evaluate instead of encouraging a generic list of popular items.
What happens while it researches
Shopping Research may ask about brands, dimensions, performance versus price, comfort, style, intended use, or budget. Product cards can appear before the guide is finished. You can then:
- Remove a product or say you are not interested.
- Ask for similar products.
- Exclude a brand or change a requirement.
- Explain that a preference was misunderstood and request a new ranking.
The process can continue without responding to every intermediate result. Corrections are most useful when they are explicit—for example, “I meant quiet operation, not silent operation; keep models with removable batteries.”

What the final buyer’s guide contains
A completed guide typically includes:
- An explanation of the buying criteria in plain language
- A short list of recommended products and why each fits
- Strengths, weaknesses, and trade-offs
- Side-by-side details such as price, size, features, and constraint matches
- Additional products that met some or all of the requirements
- Citations and links to merchants
OpenAI says Shopping Research is intended to translate technical specifications into practical implications. Treat those explanations as synthesized guidance, then inspect the underlying product page and documentation for decisions where a small specification matters.

OpenAI’s current documentation says the system may combine publicly available product information, relevant retail sources, and merchant data supplied through the Agentic Commerce Protocol. The launch description mentions prices, availability, reviews, specifications, and images, with sources cited in the guide.
Coverage is not universal. Some retailers block automated access, in which case Shopping Research may skip them or rely on other sources. OpenAI also says not all available products will necessarily appear.

How reliable are the recommendations?
Useful for
- Turning a large market into an initial shortlist
- Applying several requirements at once
- Explaining unfamiliar specifications
- Making trade-offs visible across leading options
- Reducing the number of tabs you need to open
Not authoritative for
- Final price, taxes, fees, or shipping
- Live inventory or delivery promises
- Return, warranty, or seller terms
- Safety, medical, legal, or regulated decisions
- Hands-on questions such as fit, noise, ergonomics, or long-term durability
OpenAI warns that product details, discounts, prices, and availability can be wrong or stale. Regular shopping results can also include generated labels such as “Budget-friendly” or “Most popular”; those labels are not independently verified market claims. Review summaries and ratings are drawn from public material and are not verified by OpenAI.
Personalization, memory, and privacy
Shopping Research can use preferences you state in the current session. If ChatGPT memory is enabled, it may also use information it already knows—for example, that you regularly play games when evaluating laptops. This can improve relevance but may narrow discovery or reinforce old preferences.
For a useful check, ask for two versions: one personalized using your normal preferences and one neutral shortlist based only on the current prompt. If you do not want memory-based personalization, turn memory off or clear it; the feature can still work from the instructions you provide in the session.
OpenAI says Shopping Research results are organic rather than advertisements, and says chats are not shared with retailers. Those statements do not establish that results are exhaustive, always cheapest, or that every aspect of data handling is covered by the Shopping Research documentation.

At launch, Shopping Research sent shoppers to retailer websites. OpenAI later introduced Instant Checkout for some eligible merchants and products. When it is offered, you can confirm shipping and payment details and complete the purchase in ChatGPT; otherwise, the result links to the merchant’s site. Do not assume that every recommendation supports checkout in ChatGPT.
What to verify before paying
- Confirm the exact model number, generation, configuration, and included accessories.
- Open the retailer page and recheck the current price, taxes, shipping fees, and delivery date.
- Verify stock, size, color, storage, voltage, compatibility, and other variant details.
- Check who the seller is, especially when a marketplace lists third-party merchants.
- Read the return policy and warranty terms, including exclusions and who pays return shipping.
- For important purchases, inspect independent reviews and recurring complaints rather than relying on one generated summary.
- For child-safety, medical, electrical, structural, protective, food-contact, security, accessibility, or legal-compliance products, consult the manufacturer, a qualified professional, or the applicable official standard.
Bottom line: when Shopping Research is worth using
Use Shopping Research when a purchase has several non-negotiable requirements, meaningful brand or feature trade-offs, or a budget that makes comparison worthwhile. Use regular ChatGPT shopping for a quick lookup or simple feature check. In both cases, treat the output as a research assistant and shortlist generator—not as a binding quote, a complete view of the market, or a substitute for the retailer’s final terms.
