OpenAI Appoints Fidji Simo as CEO of Applications: What the Role Means

Fidji Simo’s 2025 appointment made her head of OpenAI’s Applications organization—not OpenAI’s overall CEO. Here is the reporting line, remit and later timeline.

OpenAI appointed Fidji Simo as its CEO of Applications on May 7, 2025. She reports directly to Sam Altman, who remained OpenAI’s company-wide CEO. The appointment created a senior executive role for the organization that turns OpenAI’s research into products, services and business operations; it did not replace Altman or create a second overall CEO.

What OpenAI announced

OpenAI said Simo would lead its Applications organization as the company expanded beyond a research laboratory. The company described itself as simultaneously operating a global product business, building large-scale infrastructure for research and deployment, and managing a major nonprofit structure. Its announcement said each activity could be large enough to resemble a separate company, creating a need for additional executive leadership.

Altman retained ultimate company-wide responsibility. He said he would continue overseeing OpenAI’s major pillars while increasing his focus on Research, Compute and Safety Systems. Simo would run Applications and remain directly accountable to him.

The original announcement is dated May 7, 2025. It should therefore be read as a leadership expansion and delegation decision, not as an Altman succession announcement.

Who is Fidji Simo?

Simo joined OpenAI from Instacart, where she was chief executive officer and chair. Before Instacart, she led the Facebook app at Meta. OpenAI’s biography credits her with responsibility for major consumer products including News Feed, Stories, Groups, Video, Marketplace, Gaming, News, Dating and advertising.

She had also joined OpenAI’s board in 2024 before moving into the executive role. That combination gave her experience in consumer-product growth, marketplaces, advertising, operations and monetization rather than a background focused primarily on model research or computing infrastructure. OpenAI’s board announcement documents her earlier roles at OpenAI’s board page.

What “Applications” means at OpenAI

Applications was an internal organizational pillar, not another name for the OpenAI API and not simply one standalone app. OpenAI’s initial wording referred broadly to the business and operational teams involved in bringing research to users and benefiting the public.

Depending on the organizational period, that remit could involve:

  • ChatGPT and related consumer experiences;
  • Codex and other developer-facing products;
  • Enterprise products, sales and customer operations;
  • Product management and product engineering;
  • Business partnerships, distribution, marketing and communications; and
  • Finance, policy, legal and people functions assigned to the Applications organization.

The first five items describe the practical scope readers would expect from an applications division; they should not be treated as a permanent organization chart. OpenAI’s formal announcement used the broader phrase “business and operational teams,” while later reporting supplied additional detail. Organizational assignments can change.

How the appointment changed Sam Altman’s job

The change was a division of executive attention, not a transfer of company leadership.

  • Altman: remained CEO of OpenAI, kept involvement in important company decisions and retained oversight of Research, Compute and Applications.
  • Simo: led the Applications teams and reported directly to Altman.

In practical terms, the structure gave product and commercial execution a dedicated executive while allowing Altman to spend more time on frontier research, infrastructure, safety systems and long-term strategy. That is an organizational inference from the responsibilities OpenAI described, not a promise of faster launches or particular products.

Why OpenAI needed a applications chief

OpenAI was managing several businesses at once: training frontier models, operating enormous computing systems, serving consumers, selling enterprise and developer services, and handling safety and deployment issues. A single chief executive can remain the final decision-maker while delegating day-to-day execution of one of those areas to a specialist.

Simo’s background was especially relevant to the commercial side. Instacart involved a two-sided marketplace, consumer growth, advertising and relationships with businesses and partners. Those skills could help OpenAI balance user experience with subscriptions, enterprise adoption, developer distribution and other revenue opportunities. The appointment itself did not announce an advertising plan, a pricing change or a commitment to monetize ChatGPT in a particular way.

What it could mean for products and businesses

Area Possible significance of the role What was not announced
ChatGPT Clearer executive accountability for consumer product development and operations. No automatic change to plans, limits, models or settings.
Codex and developer products Closer coordination between research, product engineering and distribution. No guaranteed release schedule or API pricing change.
Enterprise More dedicated attention to sales, customer operations and business adoption. No universal enterprise price or contract change.
Monetization Experience from Instacart and Meta could inform subscriptions, partnerships or other commercial experiments. No official announcement that advertising was the purpose of the appointment.

For customers, the appointment alone did not alter ChatGPT prices, API rates, privacy terms, enterprise contracts or product availability. Those details must be checked on the relevant official pages when making a purchase or business decision.

Applications gained another senior layer

OpenAI later expanded the organization beneath Simo. On September 2, 2025, it announced that Vijaye Raji, the founder and CEO of Statsig, would become CTO of Applications. Raji was assigned to lead product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex, with responsibilities spanning infrastructure and Integrity, and was to report to Simo.

The announcement linked the appointment to OpenAI’s acquisition of Statsig, subject to customary closing conditions and regulatory approval at that time. This was evidence that Applications was intended to be a substantial product-and-engineering organization, not merely a title for a spokesperson. The details are in OpenAI’s September 2025 announcement.

What happened in later reorganizations?

OpenAI’s own pages published in September 2025 and February 2026 continued to identify Simo as CEO of Applications, including a September 2025 essay and a February 2026 announcement.

Separate reporting by WIRED on May 15, 2026 described further product-leadership changes, including Greg Brockman taking control of product strategy, consolidation around ChatGPT and Codex, and a reported connection between Simo and “AGI deployment.” Those are later, reported developments rather than changes to the facts of the May 2025 announcement. The current internal structure should not be treated as permanently settled without a newer primary-source confirmation. See WIRED’s account for that later reporting.

What this means for investors, buyers and developers

The appointment matters because OpenAI’s ability to turn models into reliable, widely distributed products is a business question as much as a technical one. A dedicated Applications leader could improve coordination among research, engineering, sales, finance and customer operations. It could also make priorities clearer as OpenAI serves consumers, enterprises and developers simultaneously.

There are trade-offs. Combining product, commercial and operational responsibilities can create conflicts between growth and reliability. Altman’s continuing involvement may limit the autonomy implied by Simo’s title, while later reorganizations show that OpenAI’s product structure remained fluid. None of these possibilities guarantees lower prices, new advertising, faster launches or a particular model strategy.

Readers evaluating OpenAI should treat leadership news separately from product terms. Current offerings are described at ChatGPT, ChatGPT pricing, the developer platform, API pricing, and OpenAI’s business pages. Prices, limits and contract terms can change after the appointment.
