Microsoft Revenue Rises 16% in Fiscal Q1 as Azure Growth Reaches 33%

Microsoft’s 16% headline referred to fiscal Q1 2025 revenue, not profit. Cloud led growth, Azure rose 33%, Activision boosted gaming comparisons, and net income increased 11%.

Microsoft’s fiscal first-quarter 2025 revenue rose 16% year over year to $65.585 billion. The often-repeated “earnings up 16 percent” wording is imprecise: net income increased 11% to $24.667 billion. The quarter ended September 30, 2024, and results were announced October 30, 2024. This is a historical earnings report, not Microsoft’s latest quarterly update.

The numbers behind the 16% headline

Microsoft’s reported 16% increase was GAAP revenue growth, measured against the same quarter a year earlier. Other major income-statement measures grew more slowly.

Measure Fiscal Q1 2024 Fiscal Q1 2025 Year over year
Revenue $56.517 billion $65.585 billion 16%
Operating income $26.895 billion $30.552 billion 14%
Net income $22.291 billion $24.667 billion 11%
Diluted earnings per share $2.99 $3.30 10%

These figures are from Microsoft’s FY25 Q1 earnings release. The percentages are year-over-year comparisons, not growth from the preceding quarter. Microsoft also reported 16% revenue growth on a constant-currency basis, a non-GAAP analytical measure; the headline figure is the GAAP result.

Cloud was the principal growth engine

Microsoft Cloud revenue reached $38.9 billion, up 22%. Azure and other cloud services grew 33%, substantially faster than the company’s 16% total-revenue growth. Microsoft Cloud is a broader grouping than Azure, so the $38.9 billion figure should not be treated as Azure revenue alone.

The result supports a shift toward recurring cloud infrastructure, enterprise software and AI-enabled services. It does not, by itself, establish how much revenue came specifically from AI. Microsoft did not disclose a complete standalone AI-revenue line in the release.

Segment performance

Productivity and Business Processes

Revenue was $28.317 billion, up 12%. Microsoft reported the following year-over-year changes:

  • Microsoft 365 commercial products and cloud services: up 13%.
  • Microsoft 365 commercial cloud: up 15%.
  • Commercial products: up 2%.
  • LinkedIn: up 10%.
  • Dynamics products and cloud services: up 14%.
  • Dynamics 365: up 18%.
  • Microsoft 365 consumer products and cloud services: up 5%.

Thurrott reported 84.4 million consumer Microsoft 365 subscribers, up 10% year over year; that subscriber figure is attributed to its October 30, 2024 coverage, not to a separately stated metric in Microsoft’s business-highlights section.

Intelligent Cloud

Intelligent Cloud revenue was $24.092 billion, up 20%. Server products and cloud services increased 23%, with Azure and other cloud services providing the strongest reported momentum at 33%.

More Personal Computing

Revenue reached $13.176 billion, up 17%, but the components were uneven:

  • Windows OEM and Devices: up 2%.
  • Xbox content and services: up 61%.
  • Search and news advertising, excluding traffic acquisition costs: up 18%.

The segment’s headline growth therefore combines very strong gaming-content growth with nearly flat Windows-and-devices performance.

What AI contributed—and what Microsoft did not quantify

Chief executive Satya Nadella described customers applying Microsoft’s AI platforms and tools as expanding the company’s opportunity. Microsoft presented AI demand as closely connected to Azure infrastructure and Microsoft 365 commercial-cloud consumption.

That is a strategic explanation, not a separately measured AI sales figure. The reported categories most relevant to AI monetization are Azure and other cloud services and Microsoft 365 commercial cloud. Investors still have to assess whether demand converts into durable revenue and profit after the substantial infrastructure required to serve AI workloads.

Microsoft’s release also identifies risks around competition, regulation, privacy, cybersecurity, outages, supply constraints, execution and the possibility that cloud and AI investments will not produce expected returns. Strong Azure growth should not be interpreted as proof that every AI investment will earn an attractive return.

Gaming growth included a major acquisition effect

Xbox content and services revenue rose 61%, but Microsoft said 53 percentage points of that increase reflected the net impact of its Activision Blizzard acquisition. The result includes games, subscriptions and related digital content, and should not be presented as 61% organic growth.

Hardware was a different story. Thurrott reported Xbox hardware revenue down 29% year over year and noted a decline in Surface. Separating content from hardware is essential: Activision materially lifted digital gaming comparisons while console and device demand remained weak.

Reporting changes affect segment comparisons

Microsoft recast certain Windows commercial revenue into Microsoft 365. That accounting and reporting change means the segment presentation is not perfectly comparable with earlier presentations. It can alter the apparent size and ranking of Productivity and Business Processes versus other segments, even though it does not change Microsoft’s total company revenue.

Cash returned to shareholders

Microsoft returned $9.0 billion through dividends and share repurchases during the fiscal first quarter. That capital return provides investor context, but it does not change the operating picture: revenue grew 16%, while net income grew 11%.

What to watch when interpreting the quarter

  • Azure durability: A 33% increase is strong, but future growth depends on sustained enterprise demand and available computing capacity.
  • AI monetization: Cloud growth demonstrates demand for infrastructure and services, not a separately verified AI revenue total.
  • Investment returns: AI infrastructure can raise capital intensity before it produces corresponding profit.
  • Organic gaming growth: Future comparisons will show more clearly how much momentum remains after the Activision contribution.
  • Hardware weakness: The 2% Windows OEM and Devices increase and reported Xbox decline contrast with the growth in cloud and digital content.
  • Comparability: Windows commercial-revenue recasting complicates comparisons with older segment presentations.

Microsoft’s forward-looking risks include competitive pressure, regulatory and legal exposure, cybersecurity and privacy incidents, service outages, supply limitations and uncertain returns on new technology investments. A strong quarter does not establish that future growth will match this rate or that the shares are undervalued.

Bottom line

Microsoft’s fiscal Q1 2025 was primarily a cloud-growth quarter. Revenue increased 16% to $65.585 billion, Microsoft Cloud grew 22%, and Azure and other cloud services grew 33%. AI was the strategic demand catalyst, but Microsoft did not report a standalone AI-revenue figure. Gaming added a 61% content-and-services increase that was heavily assisted by Activision, while hardware was weaker. The accurate conclusion is 16% revenue growth and 11% net-income growth—not a 16% increase in profit.
