OpenAI has agreed to acquire product experimentation company Statsig in an all-stock deal reported at $1.1 billion, while naming Statsig founder Vijaye Raji CTO of Applications. The agreement was announced September 2, 2025, but OpenAI said it still required regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. The announcement therefore describes a proposed acquisition, not proof that the deal has closed.
What OpenAI announced
OpenAI said it had signed a definitive agreement to acquire Statsig. The company’s announcement did not disclose a purchase price; TechCrunch reporting republished by Yahoo Finance put the transaction’s reported value at $1.1 billion and described it as an all-stock deal. OpenAI’s announcement and the price reporting should be read together: the price is secondary-source reporting, not a figure confirmed on OpenAI’s announcement page.
At the time of the announcement, completion remained subject to regulatory approval and other customary closing conditions. The sources cited here do not establish whether the acquisition later closed, so it is more precise to say OpenAI agreed to acquire Statsig than to describe Statsig as already owned by OpenAI.
How the leadership structure is changing
Vijaye Raji will lead product engineering for applications
Statsig founder and CEO Vijaye Raji was named OpenAI’s CTO of Applications. He is to report to Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications, and lead product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex, with responsibilities that include infrastructure and Integrity. This is an applications leadership role; OpenAI did not announce that Raji would lead all company engineering or research. OpenAI’s announcement describes his remit and reporting line.

Other leaders move to science and business applications
Secondary reporting described a broader reorganization alongside the Statsig agreement. Kevin Weil, previously OpenAI’s chief product officer, was to lead the new OpenAI for Science group as a vice president. Weil described its aim as using AI to accelerate scientific discovery. Srinivas Narayanan was reported to be moving into the CTO of B2B Applications role, working with COO Brad Lightcap, whose responsibilities include enterprise relationships. These details were reported by Yahoo Finance’s republication of TechCrunch.
Together, the changes make the organization’s focus on consumer applications, business applications, and science more explicit. They do not, by themselves, establish how authority or budgets will be divided in practice.

What Statsig does—and why it matters to OpenAI
Statsig is a product experimentation and analytics company, not a foundation-model developer. Statsig says it began in February 2021 and describes a platform spanning A/B tests, feature flags, product analytics, session replay, marketing experiments, web analytics, and real-time decision-making. Its company announcement names Atlassian, Notion, Brex, and Bloomberg among its customers; those are company-reported references. See Statsig’s announcement.
- Feature flags determine which users see a feature and when, allowing a team to release gradually or limit access.
- A/B tests compare versions of a product or experience to estimate how a change affects chosen outcomes.
- Product analytics measures user behavior, such as steps in a workflow or where people stop.
- Experimentation infrastructure links rollout controls, measurement, analysis, and decisions about whether to expand, change, or reverse a release.
For example, a team could expose a new interface to a limited share of users, compare outcomes with the existing interface, and decide whether to widen the rollout. That illustrates how such tools work; it is not a claim about a specific OpenAI experiment.

OpenAI said Statsig’s platform was already used for experimentation at the company and could help it iterate faster and build more responsive products. The strategic case is broader than testing interface details: ChatGPT and Codex are applications whose performance depends on engineering choices, product design, and how changes affect users. Acquiring infrastructure already used internally could make experimentation more consistent across those products.
Why AI products make experimentation more demanding
In conventional software, a team might compare conversion, clicks, or task completion after changing a feature. AI applications add more variables: model behavior, prompts, routing, tool use, latency, safety controls, and operating cost can all affect the result. A change that improves engagement may still make answers less reliable, slower, more expensive, or less safe.

That makes measurement a strategic capability, but it also limits what an experimentation platform can prove. A/B testing can help estimate the effect of a product change on selected measures; it cannot by itself establish that an AI system is truthful, safe, or beneficial. Teams need evaluation methods and safeguards suited to those questions rather than treating engagement metrics as a complete measure of quality.
It is reasonable to infer that Statsig could help OpenAI connect product releases with measurable outcomes. It is not established that the acquisition will make ChatGPT more personalized, profitable, or effective; those would be potential outcomes, not announced results.

What Statsig customers were told—and what remains unanswered
OpenAI said Statsig would continue operating independently and serving customers from its Seattle office. Statsig separately said it would continue providing service and investing in its core products. OpenAI also said Statsig employees would become OpenAI employees after the acquisition closes. These are stated plans conditional on completion, not guarantees about the company’s permanent structure. Statsig’s customer announcement and OpenAI’s statement give the announced commitments.
The announcements do not specify whether customer contracts, prices, data-processing terms, subprocessors, data residency, support commitments, security certifications, or product roadmaps will change. They also do not settle whether Statsig will remain available to OpenAI competitors or how the company will address customers’ concerns about confidentiality and vendor neutrality. Customers should rely on their contract and direct communications from Statsig for operational terms rather than assume those details are unchanged.
What the deal signals—and the trade-offs
The agreement points to a company placing more organizational weight on the applications built around its models. Statsig offers a platform for measuring and managing product changes, while Raji brings leadership experience spanning a startup and large-scale product engineering. The price reported by secondary coverage is substantial, but the transaction’s strategic rationale is not just the software: it also includes a team, an existing internal relationship, and an executive role tied to ChatGPT and Codex.
- Potential upside: OpenAI could gain tighter links between rollout decisions and product measurement, and apply experimentation practices across more applications.
- Integration trade-off: Continuing to operate Statsig independently may help maintain customer service, while potentially slowing deeper technical or organizational integration.
- Trust and neutrality risk: Customers may question whether a platform owned by OpenAI can remain an appropriate vendor for companies that compete with it. The announcements do not resolve that concern.
- Measurement risk: Teams can over-optimize for outcomes that are easy to count, such as engagement, at the expense of trust, reliability, or long-term product quality.
- Execution uncertainty: The deal’s closing, customer terms, and eventual product integration are not established by the cited announcements.
The organizational changes also give the enterprise and science efforts clearer leadership labels: Narayanan’s reported B2B Applications role is paired with Lightcap’s enterprise remit, while Weil’s science group has a separate stated mission. That signals a division of attention, but the available reporting does not show what the changes will mean for budgets, product roadmaps, or operating authority.
