OpenAI announced on September 2, 2025, that it had signed an agreement to acquire Statsig, a product experimentation and analytics platform. Statsig founder and CEO Vijaye Raji was named OpenAI’s incoming CTO of Applications, with responsibility for product engineering across ChatGPT and Codex. OpenAI and Statsig did not disclose the purchase price; media reports put the deal at about $1.1 billion in stock. The announcement said closing remained subject to customary conditions, including regulatory approval.
What OpenAI announced

Under the plan announced, Statsig would continue operating independently, serving customers from its Seattle base. Its employees would become OpenAI employees once the acquisition was finalized. OpenAI’s announcement and Statsig’s statement both described continuity for the business and its customers.
What Statsig does
Statsig is broader than a conventional software-testing vendor. It gives product and engineering teams tools to experiment with product changes, control feature releases, and measure how users respond. Its offerings include A/B testing, feature flags and controlled rollouts, product analytics, session replay, marketing experiments, and web analytics.

The practical value is connecting decisions about what to release with ways to measure the result. A team can limit a new feature to a group of users, compare outcomes, and expand or roll back the change based on evidence rather than treating release and measurement as separate jobs. Statsig describes its platform as bringing experimentation, measurement, and release decisions together in its acquisition announcement.
Why the platform could matter to OpenAI
OpenAI’s stated rationale is that it is scaling ChatGPT and developing more applications for consumers and businesses, which requires engineering systems that support fast iteration, quality, and reliability. OpenAI also said it already used Statsig in its product-development process. Bringing the platform and its team inside could give the Applications organization more direct control over experimentation infrastructure.

The broader product-engineering significance is an inference, not a promised outcome in the announcement. AI applications change in more ways than their screens: teams may adjust model versions or routing, feature access, safety interventions, tool use, and workflows. They also have to weigh response quality against latency and inference cost. Experimentation infrastructure can help teams measure the effects of changes and manage rollouts, though ordinary A/B tests alone cannot settle every question about nondeterministic outputs, long-running tasks, factuality, or safety.
That makes the transaction strategically relevant beyond a software acquisition. The system through which users encounter a model needs ongoing measurement and release controls; buying a platform OpenAI already used could strengthen that product-development layer. It does not, by itself, establish that ChatGPT will improve or that Statsig technology will be embedded directly in OpenAI products.

Raji’s role and background
Raji was named CTO of Applications, not OpenAI’s company-wide chief technology officer. OpenAI said he would report to Fidji Simo, CEO of Applications, and lead product engineering for ChatGPT and Codex. His remit includes core systems, product lines, infrastructure, and Integrity. OpenAI framed the role as helping translate model advances into safe, useful, reliable products.
According to Statsig’s biography, Raji spent roughly a decade at Facebook, later Meta, in engineering and leadership roles associated with products including Messenger for Windows, Facebook Marketplace, Groups Commerce, gaming, Facebook Seattle, and entertainment. He founded Statsig in February 2021, according to the company’s acquisition announcement. The combination of large-scale consumer-product work and startup experience is relevant to the applications remit, but the public announcements do not say that his past roles alone determined the appointment.

What the reported $1.1 billion means
OpenAI and Statsig did not publish the acquisition price in their official announcements. Thurrott reported a transaction value of approximately $1.1 billion and described it as an all-stock deal. Those are reported terms, not a purchase price confirmed by the companies in the cited announcements.
The figure has a separate, officially announced context. In May 2025, Statsig said it raised $100 million in a Series C led by ICONIQ Growth, with Sequoia and Madrona participating, at a $1.1 billion valuation. The company’s Series C announcement establishes that financing valuation; it does not prove that the acquisition consideration was exactly the same. A prior funding valuation and a reported acquisition value are different claims.

What Statsig customers were told—and what remains open
At announcement, Statsig said services would continue and investment in its core products would remain a priority. OpenAI said Statsig would keep operating independently and serving its customer base. The announcements did not state that customers needed to change contracts or that pricing, product branding, support channels, or data practices would change.
They also did not specify whether customer data would move to OpenAI, whether Statsig data would be used to train models, or how the external product roadmap might evolve. Those points should be treated as unanswered, not as evidence that a change is planned.
Prudent checks for customers
There is no announcement-based reason to switch vendors solely because of the deal. Customers can use the transition to check their own contractual and operational exposure:
- Review change-of-control, data-processing, and termination clauses in the applicable contract.
- Ask Statsig whether data residency, subprocessors, security attestations, or support channels will change.
- Seek confirmation on API compatibility and roadmap continuity for the products and features the team depends on.
- As a business-continuity precaution, retain exports or records of experiment definitions, feature-flag configurations, metrics, and audit data.
- Base any migration decision on concrete changes to terms, data handling, service quality, or product direction rather than the acquisition headline alone.
What the deal could mean for the market
For OpenAI, potential benefits include faster product experimentation, more controlled feature rollouts, and closer alignment between product analytics and engineering. These are strategic possibilities, not outcomes the acquisition announcement guarantees.

A platform used by outside companies will be owned by a company building AI products of its own, so customers may pay closer attention to vendor neutrality, confidentiality, and data governance. Integration could also redirect some team attention or affect priorities over time. None of those risks was reported as having materialized in the announcements, and independent operation was the stated plan.
