Apple has reportedly pushed back the next iPhone Air after the first model sold below expectations, but Apple has not confirmed a delay, cancellation, or new release date. The November 11, 2025 report, attributed to The Information, said the Air 2 was no longer expected in fall 2026; spring 2027 was discussed as a possibility, not a firm launch window. The same reporting pointed to unsold inventory and production changes as signs of weaker demand.
What has been reported about iPhone Air 2?
Secondary coverage of The Information’s November 11, 2025 report said Apple had delayed the next-generation iPhone Air after sales of the first model fell short of expectations. Thurrott reported that the original target was fall 2026, with spring 2027 considered as a possible alternative. Neither timing has been confirmed by Apple.
The claims should be kept distinct: the report described weaker-than-expected sales and unsold inventory, and secondary coverage also discussed production reductions. Those reports do not provide audited sales totals or establish how many phones remain in the channel. Techmeme’s aggregation identifies The Information as the source behind the delay and inventory claims; repeating coverage is not the same as independent confirmation.
Thurrott’s account of the delay report and Techmeme’s source aggregation describe the claims. Apple has not publicly announced an Air 2 schedule or specifications.

Is the iPhone Air 2 delayed or canceled?
“Reportedly delayed” or “put on hold” is the careful description. The available reporting says the fall 2026 plan was off and that the product’s timing was uncertain; it does not establish that Apple canceled the device. Headlines describing the Air 2 as dead go further than the underlying claims.
The first iPhone Air remains on sale through Apple’s U.S. store. That confirms the current model is available, not that a second generation is guaranteed. Apple’s iPhone Air store page is the source for current availability.

Why might the current Air be a hard sell?
Apple’s U.S. list prices put the Air at $999 and the standard iPhone 17 at $799, a $200 difference. The Air gives buyers a larger screen, a much thinner titanium design, and an A19 Pro chip; the less expensive iPhone 17 has a second rear camera, including an ultrawide lens. That creates a clear choice between a distinctive form factor and broader camera versatility, rather than a straightforward upgrade at a higher price.
| Feature | iPhone Air | iPhone 17 |
|---|---|---|
| U.S. starting price | $999 | $799 |
| Display | 6.5-inch | 6.3-inch |
| Processor | A19 Pro | A19 |
| Rear cameras | 48MP Fusion Main | 48MP Fusion Main and 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide |
| Body | Titanium; 5.6 mm thick | Aluminum |
| Starting storage | 256GB | 256GB |
These are Apple’s published U.S. starting prices and product specifications, not evidence by themselves of why any particular customer chose another phone. Apple introduced the Air on September 9, 2025, emphasizing its thin design; its current product information lists a 6.5-inch display, A19 Pro, a 48MP Fusion Main rear camera, and up to 27 hours of video playback. Apple lists the iPhone 17 from $799 and specifies an ultrawide rear camera. See Apple’s iPhone Air announcement, Air specifications, iPhone 17 announcement, and model comparison.

The likely positioning challenge is an inference, not a measured explanation of sales: buyers may have to value thinness and the larger display enough to accept a higher entry price and one rear camera. The Air is not simply a cheaper or better-equipped version of a Pro; it prioritizes thinness over camera breadth.
What might Apple change in a revised Air?
Secondary coverage says Apple may be considering a second rear camera. If true, an additional camera could address the most conspicuous capability gap versus the standard iPhone 17. But there is no confirmed camera layout, sensor, or release specification.

There is also a design trade-off. More camera hardware can require additional space, weight, cost, or engineering compromises; whether Apple could add it without materially changing the Air’s thin profile is unknown. The strategic tension is whether Apple can make the thin-phone idea easier to justify without diluting the feature that defines it.

The reported spring 2027 possibility has been discussed alongside speculation about a broader shift in Apple’s release cadence, with Pro models potentially remaining in the fall and standard or lower-cost models appearing later. That is a possible roadmap interpretation, not an announced schedule. Apple has not confirmed an iPhone 18 or Air 2 timetable in the cited material. Treat spring 2027 as an unconfirmed window, not a date to plan around.

Should you buy the current iPhone Air or wait?
Choose the Air for its design
The current Air fits buyers who put a very thin titanium body, a 6.5-inch display, and A19 Pro performance ahead of camera flexibility or entry price. Apple’s U.S. store lists the 256GB model from $999; configurations also include 512GB and 1TB. Check the Apple purchase listing for the live configuration and price.
Choose iPhone 17 for value and camera flexibility
The standard iPhone 17 starts at $799 in the United States, has a smaller 6.3-inch display and aluminum body, and includes an ultrawide rear camera. It is the more straightforward option if you would rather save $200 at the listed entry price than pay for the Air’s thin design.
Consider a Pro model for camera capability
The iPhone 17 Pro costs more than the Air and is the more natural fit for buyers prioritizing a more capable multi-camera system and premium features. Its live price and exact configuration should be checked on Apple’s comparison page.
Wait only if the rumored revision solves your specific concern
If you like the Air’s form but consider its single rear camera a deal-breaker, waiting may be reasonable only if you can tolerate an uncertain schedule and the possibility that the rumored second camera never appears. A current purchase does not reserve or guarantee a future model.
