Online Payday Loans: How to Check Costs, Lenders, and Safer Options

Online payday loans vary by lender and state. Learn how to verify a lender, understand fees and repayment risks, and consider other ways to cover an urgent expense.

There is no reliable nationwide “five best” list of online payday loans: whether a lender may serve you and what it can charge depend on your state, and an online application may connect you with a lead generator rather than a lender. Before sharing personal or bank details, confirm who would make the loan, check that lender’s state license, and compare the written cost and repayment terms.

What an online payday loan is—and why the terms vary

The Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFPB) describes a payday loan as usually a short-term, high-cost loan, generally for $500 or less, typically due in one payment on the borrower’s next payday. The agency also notes there is no single set definition; state law and the loan agreement shape the amount, due date, fees, and other terms. See the CFPB’s definition and state-law guidance.

Online availability does not make a loan legal in every state or make its terms comparable to another lender’s. Some states do not permit payday lending, while others set their own limits on loan amounts, fees, rollovers, and repayment plans. Verify rules for your state rather than applying a fee or rule you saw advertised elsewhere.

How much a payday loan can cost

In guidance last reviewed November 25, 2024, the CFPB says payday-loan fees commonly range from $10 to $30 per $100 borrowed, depending on state law. It uses $15 per $100 as an example: on a two-week loan, that fee works out to nearly 400% APR. The CFPB’s fee explanation gives these illustrations:

Illustration Cost shown
$300 borrowed at the CFPB’s $15-per-$100 example fee $45 fee; $345 total due
The same $300 loan renewed once, with a $45 renewal fee while the original $300 remains owed $90 in fees over four weeks, with the original $300 still owed

These are CFPB examples, not a quote or universal offer. Ask for the total amount due and its date, including any late, returned-payment, card, or other fees. The FTC says APR is the clearest way to compare loan costs and that the finance charge and APR must be disclosed in writing before you sign; see its payday and car-title loan guidance.

How to check whether an online lender is legitimate

A polished website or the word “legit” in an advertisement is not proof that a business is licensed, or even that it is the lender. The CFPB warns that many payday-loan websites are lead generators: they collect applications and may pass or sell the information to lenders. An application can therefore lead to contact from multiple lenders or service providers. Read the CFPB’s online payday loan guidance before submitting sensitive information.

  1. Identify the actual lender. Find the legal business name, physical or mailing address, phone number, and the entity that would make the loan. If the site says it matches applicants with a network, treat it as a lead generator—not as the lender—and find out who will receive your information.
  2. Check the license for your state. Contact your state regulator or attorney general and ask whether the named lender is licensed to offer this product where you live. The CFPB explains how to check payday-lender licensing. In some states, an unlicensed loan may be void; whether that applies depends on state law, so do not assume the outcome without checking with your regulator or a qualified legal adviser.
  3. Read the written disclosures before agreeing. Compare APR, finance charge, amount received, total due, payment date, and all possible fees. Confirm whether repayment is a single lump sum or installments, and ask what rollover or extended-payment options are available under your state’s rules.
  4. Review privacy terms and bank access. Understand what information the site collects, who may receive it, and how it may be used. Do not provide a Social Security number or checking-account details until you know which business is collecting them and why.
  5. Keep the offer and contact details. Save the disclosures, agreement, lender name, and a copy of any payment authorization so you can refer to the actual terms if there is a dispute.

Can you repay it without missing essential bills?

Before accepting, work out whether you can pay the full amount on the stated date from money you expect to have available—not by borrowing again or skipping rent, utilities, food, or another essential bill. A loan that cannot be repaid on time can become more expensive through renewal or rollover charges where permitted. A failed debit may also trigger lender fees and bank overdraft or nonsufficient-funds charges. The CFPB explains possible late and NSF fees.

Online lenders will likely ask for authorization to withdraw payments electronically. Read the authorization closely: note the amount and date of each withdrawal, and understand how to contact the lender if a payment problem arises. The CFPB’s payday-loan repayment guidance covers repayment and ACH authorization.

Alternatives to investigate before borrowing

Depending on your situation, cost, and eligibility, the CFPB suggests considering alternatives such as:

  • Asking an employer about an advance, or checking whether a nonprofit or community organization offers emergency help or a small-dollar advance.
  • Asking family or friends for help, with repayment expectations agreed clearly in advance.
  • Checking with a bank or credit union about a small-dollar loan or other emergency-credit option.
  • Asking the creditor or service provider whether it can change the due date or arrange a payment plan.
  • Comparing a credit-card option, if available, against the payday loan’s total cost and the consequences of carrying a balance.

These options are not guaranteed to be available or cheaper in every case. The CFPB discusses them in its guidance on whether to get a payday loan when you need money now.

Special protections for some military borrowers

Covered servicemembers and their dependents may have protections under the Military Lending Act (MLA), including a 36% Military Annual Percentage Rate cap and other limits. These protections do not apply to all borrowers or necessarily to every product; check whether you are covered and whether the specific loan is covered. The CFPB summarizes the MLA in its payday-loan definition guidance.

What to do if the offer is unclear

Pause rather than relying on a verbal assurance or an advertised “instant” decision. Ask the business to identify the lender and provide the full written disclosures, then confirm the lender’s state license. If it will not identify the lender, explain who receives your data, or show the total repayment obligation before you agree, you do not have enough information to make a sound comparison.
