O’Neill’s Summer 2017 youth catalog included two full-coverage one-piece styles, the Starlis and Chica, in sizes 7, 8, 10, 12, and 14. Those catalog prices and products are historical, not confirmation of current stock. Today’s teen and tween one-pieces range from classic cuts to long-sleeve surf suits, so compare the specific style, size chart, coverage, and intended use before buying.

What “one-piece” means in current youth swimwear
The label covers more than one silhouette or use. SwimOutlet’s girls’ category includes racerback, crossback, scoop-neck, and V-neck cuts, and distinguishes fashion or active styles from competition and training suits. Snapper Rock’s teen girls’ one-piece collection includes classic suits as well as long-sleeve surf suits. These are examples from individual retailers, not a universal definition or complete market survey.

Retail size groupings vary too. SwimOutlet describes its big-kid/tween range as sizes 8–16, while Snapper Rock’s teen/tween products extend through size 16 and its teen swimwear is described as designed for ages 8–16. Age labels and size numbers are not interchangeable body measurements, and neither range should be treated as a standard across brands.

How to compare a suit before buying
Start with measurements and the maker’s chart
Measure the wearer and compare those measurements with the current chart for the exact brand and product. Do not assume that a size 12 in a historical O’Neill suit matches a size 12 from another label. Snapper Rock says its teen swimwear generally runs true to size or slightly smaller and recommends sizing up for someone between sizes or seeking more coverage; that is the brand’s guidance, not an independent fit finding. Check the brand’s current sizing information before ordering.
Match coverage and construction to the activity
- Coverage and cutouts: Check the front and back coverage, leg opening, and cutout placement rather than relying on “one-piece” or “full coverage” alone.
- Neckline and back: Racerback and crossback designs differ from neck-tie or scoop-back styles. For active swimming, consider whether straps and the back construction feel secure during the intended movement.
- Beach, surf, or training: A fashion suit, a long-sleeve surf suit, and a competition or training suit serve different purposes. Choose according to how and where it will be worn.
- Fabric claims: Retail listings may specify nylon-spandex or chlorine-resistant fabric; Snapper Rock says its collection uses UPF50+ fabric. Treat chlorine resistance and UPF as brand or retailer claims unless independently tested evidence is available, and confirm the wording for the individual product.
- Padding: Look for confirmation on the particular style and size. The 2017 Starlis and Chica catalog descriptions specify removable bra cups only for sizes 12 and 14. Snapper Rock says some current styles have thin removable padding in sizes 14 and 16; that does not establish padding across the whole collection.
For Snapper Rock’s own size guidance and collection details, consult its teen girls’ one-piece page; the advice and UPF description there are brand statements, not independent testing.

What the historical examples can—and cannot—tell you
The 2017 catalog is useful for identifying the period’s named youth styles, their listed details, and the sizes and prices printed at the time. It cannot tell you whether either suit is still sold, what a current listing should cost, or how it would fit or perform. No specific current listing, seller, or stock for Starlis or Chica is established here. If considering a used or resale suit, verify its condition and the actual size and care information from the seller rather than assuming the old catalog price reflects its value.
